A red XS max would be nice but I already have gold. I wonder if Apple will add more colours next year or those are just reserved for the XR.
If so, sign me up for a medium blue.

I for one never buy mid-cycle products including cars unless there's a rebate. Past the mid-cycle, you're just months away from a new gen or version.

Like in this case where we’re not even half way there? We’re just months away from the iPhone XII. 19 months.

Don’t get me wrong, I hate colour updates as much as the next marketing-drivel-hating person.

One of the most important sentence is not translated. That is "售价依旧是万元起步". It means the selling price is still the same starting from RMB 10,000. (Around $1500).

Not everyone in China like aids, whether it is helping or talking about it, especially having their favourite fortune colour linked to it.

Apple could still donate money from every product Red. They just don't label it any more in China.

Isn't this expected? Apple is only lowering price across all other Channels.

Color isn't as important as it used to be. Most people have to use cases anyway for fear of broken glass on front and back. With a most cases you can't even see the color.

Recent tests. (Your analogy stinks, pun intended)

Except it’s doesn’t

Despite the lack of any PRODUCT(RED) mention in China, Apple CEO Tim Cook assured MacRumors in a March 2017 email that the company upholds its charitable Global Fund donations commitment for every special edition red iPhone sold in every country in the world, with or without said branding.

Since this is so important to Apple, couldn't they just, you know, donate for every product sold? Rather than only for the red ones that never seem to be available when sales are highest?

Should’ve done this during Chinese New Year then.
Slapping a new colour on a phone with recurrent modem and wifi issues that can’t be fixed by software is like spraying perfume on a turd
What modem and WiFi issues?

Have facts or data on that? Or just some anecdotal reports?

Why doesn't the AIDS marketing work in China like it does in the West?

Edit: nevermind, it says in the article.
Another reason (which I think might be the main reason) is that people generally don’t want to buy a product that is somehow associated with a diesease and it’s considered bad luck in China.

I'd love a Product Red phone at launch.. but I guess it's a way for Apple to generate interest again halfway through the product cycle.

I mean, of course the idea of the PRODUCT(RED) campaign is not only to raise money, but also raise awareness through the distinctive coloration. Perhaps they think people will be more proud to show off a product clearly associated with their campaign rather than just any old iPhone.

Brand awareness, IMO.

But to your point Apple can’t ever do enough. They can’t donate enough money to enough charities often enough and have enough products where they make a donation.

This isn’t an Apple problem per se. Its taking A positive and turning it into a negative. MR posters sometimes do that very well.

If that's the case, there should have been a red iPhone from the beginning. It all starts with understanding the market where you want to sell for.

That's the problem with Apple these days. They don't even know where they have to compete with in certain markets or what the demand for is.

That's probably the reason for the big fail in India too. Selling an old SE while you already can get a full spec phone with big OLED screen for half the price of an SE.

Apple is so out of touch in so many markets

It's not a question of being out of touch, it's a question of exchange rates and import duties.
Apple ware is massively taxed in India, as it's not built there. Apple is trying to change that but it takes time. They'll never compete with the bargain basement stuff but once the phones are built locally, at least they'll compete.

In China the situation is different. The iPhone is priced in line with foreign products and therefore suffer like other foreign products in a similar price range (Samsung, LG, etc)

Absolutly. Apple should fire its hundreds of employees in the marketing worldwide and hires you, because, obviouslys, you know best. But maybe, just maybe, there is a lot more going on behind the curtins and we have no clue. In any case, obviously it is apple fault that they are not capable of selling milions of high end 1000 USD phones in India where the minimum wage is 60 USD a MONTH. Maybe they should start selling iPhone 4 at 100 USD in India just for the sake of selling more phones and make you happy?

Good stuff (assuming this isn't like Tim's "we pay all our taxes" lie)

If you think Apple doesn't understand the Chinese market, you are again mistaken.

Despite the revenue miss in the quarter, revenue was still up y/y in China.

Apple had $52B in sales in China alone in 2018, up 16% y/y. You really think they don't understand the market? $52B is larger than the revenue of the entire Walt Disney Company.

I wish they’d just release red on day one. I always want red, but I’m not going to wait a year to get it.

Shows how out of touch Apple is with the Chinese market. A Red iPhone would have sold hugely in the run up to CNY. Being late for the gate, not so much...
