I haven't been to an Apple Store in ages so forgive me for asking but what kind of dock is that in the lower right? I'm sure it is a display designed only for the stores but is it actually a working dock as well?

interesting.

definately a cool dock!

Ultimately: who cares?
Bono still sucks, U2 has always sucked, and, much as i like a) the color of the new iPod and b) fighting AIDS, Apple's weird extended relationship with Bono makes very little sense to me.

P.S. Damn, Bono sucks.

HAHAHAHAHAHA! Yes!! I keep asking myself why the hell there is so much Bono/U2 stuff... What if I wanted a "Gordon Lightfoot Edition iPod"?

Not sure if it's already been pointed out, but GAP is also releasing a Red line of clothes tomorrow to support AIDS in Africa. I wonder if Oprah will be visiting various retail stores supporting the Red thing tomorrow.

I really want the Red SLVR phone, but it's not sold here.

It makes me so happy to know that there are still plenty of stupid people in the world.

Thank you

LOL me too! What is so stupid about solving the problem with total success following my logic? Just because people are not going to follow my advice, does not mean that is somehow sophomoric.

I'm glad this isn't in an 8gb variety... because I will definatly start to regret the purchase of my black one.

I am sure this has been said but I wanted to get my post in...

Looks cool, just hope the $10 donation does not mean it will cost more. Red is not THAT great.

From looking at the picture, should it be a fact that the red iPod nano is coming out? It doesn't look like a rumor that I see red iPod nanos on display.

It's fact, not rumor. One of my friends was there while they were doing stuff with it, and the picture is obviously not photoshopped. They talked about it on CBS as well.

I really can't believe some of the posts that have been made here.

To suggest that the people of Africa deserve to be wiped out by aids as they haven't evolved or kept up with the rest of the world is beyond contempt. I want to say something else but I'm just totally lost for words by your comments.

Yet another person who apparently either does not know how to read, or chooses to only read a portion of a discussion...

Nobody in their right mind would ever say that anyone deserves to be wiped out by a disease because their lifestyle and culture are different. That's a completely asinine and foolish line of reasoning. If you read closely, you'd see that the discussion was over (1) whether it is our place to impose our will, our culture, and our system of education on a society that has opposed that very idea all along, and (2) whether that imposition, if it were even possible, would solve the problem, or if the problem is instead more deeply rooted in that culture as a whole and is beyond repair by education and contraception.

It's a perfectly valid, intelligent, and reasonable discussion. It has nothing to do with approving of genocide or allowing the spread of disease. It's far more important than that.

I notice no one has commented on the Pope and the Catholic Church forbidding the use of condoms and the effect that has on spreading infection even further.

Oh boy... the Catholic Church is WAY too easy of a target. We should probably leave that one alone.

Yes.

Here in Chicago, The Gap and The Apple store are a block from each other on Michigan Ave. where they taped. I also believe they went across the street to the newly opened Motorola Store to the new stuff there.

No, it'll be the same 199 cause another $10 and whoa... way over price for charity

Look at the Story on the front page of the chicago tribune, it's true. It says right there that apple is introducing a Red iPod Nano, it's not photoshoped you goofs.

I hope you noticed the :D , because I do know that wasn't photoshopped

I hope you people realise that not all people in the catholic church think about condoms and such the way the Vatican does.

I am a seminarian (priest in training so to speak) and do not think condoms should be forbidden.

Don't forget that the Catholic church is very open, as in the Evolution theory, Big Bang, not taking the bible as a science or history book.

Furhtermore, the pope has an iPod nano, and he saaid computer technology is the future.

It's like those audiophiles who argue endlessly about if gold plated or silver plated speaker wire sounds better.

true, but there is a parralel could be drawn between audiophiles and mac "zealots".

and its fiber optic vs copper plated. its the rca connectors taht would be gold or silver plated, and yes, gold sounds better, transfers signal better.

my two cents :)

Doesn't anyone else think they're sending kind of a mixed message here? Both of them listening to music with an unprotected iPod? Somebody roll a nano tube sock onto that thing!

I think the red color is so much better than the other current Nano colors (pink, blue, green). It looks great... if they release a red MacBook, I might buy it. I don't need a red Nano right now.

well here's the kicker for the fools who fall for these gimmicks.
you can donate directly and it's a tax write off as a charitable contribution.
or, you can buy the same boring lollipop, in 10 different colors, and see this 5% go towards the charity which apple will gladly pony up as it will benefit them after their returns and reports are done.

so i gotta ask, why bother justifying your purchase as "good will"?
why not just call a spade a spade and say...durr durr durrr?

I agree, this thing is not about doing something good, it's about buying a gimmick that says to everyone "I gave to charity" while in reality you were not spending one dime more than you would have spent on the gimmick that you wanted to buy anyway. What kind of ***** is this where you just want to show around that you're a good person while in reality you couldn't get your thumbs out of your butt to donate anything at all, not even 10 bucks. It's called VANITY, not Charity. Write a small check for crying out loud if you want to do something, it's even deductable, and attach the receipt to your favourite shirt so everyone can see if you feel so strongly about it.

This ipod thingy is about you feeling good, not about much else. To you it feels like a 200 Dollar donation, also might help you to convince yourself to buy yet another gadget..pardon me, do some charity for africa, apple's sales go up a bit, they'll make a little less money on the ipod, 10 bucks (which may however be deductable, I don't know) but basically will benefit from it too because they sold a couple more at a slightly lower but still pretty good profit margin. Sure, some bucks go to Africa but let's be honest here: Apple makes more money, the consumer gets to wear a stylish gimmick with good-person-tag at no extra charge... now that's some serious altruism there.

Hooray to those that, the next time they will be confronted with some reporting on Aids in Africa, will be able to caress that small, hard bulge in their pocket (red iPod!), touching it and whispering "I did my share to solve the problem".

wow, just as I figured buying a shiny new ipod wasn't totally necessary, they bring out a charity ipod.

well, if its in the name of a good cause, and will help wipe out aids and poverty, I guess its my moral obligation to buy a shiny new toy :)

It amazes me how people can't miss an oportunity to slam Apple, U2 and anyone else related.

All I see here is at least somebody somewhere is trying a different angle to help others... is that such a bad thing?

Why not capitalise on a bandwagon product such as the iPod in order to fund something positive?

And those who say yeah yeah donate money directly and get the tax waiver on the donation.. brilliant a great idea but isn't that something that already happens and will continue to happen with or without the iPod.

Oh and how much have those who raised this point donated to this cause?

I really do struggle sometimes to understand some of the sanctimonious comments around here.

All I can say is, kudos to Bono, Apple and anyone else doing anything they can to help people in need.... its more than most of us.

**soap box for sale all profits to a good cause** :p

Who cares if it's vanity? I'd rather somebody buy a Red iPod and feel good about themselves, be able to brag to their friends and show off to the community than for the same person to otherwise do nothing.

As long as it's legal I'm pretty sure the folks in charge of the aid money don't care where the money's coming from. I don't think the AIDS sufferers in Africa give a rat's arse that the money that helps their problems comes from rampant western consumerism - they're just happy to have some help.

I think it's a good idea.
