Reddit has always struggled to make money. Keep that in mind going forward.

I’m a repair technician and I specialize in Apple products. Reddit’s IPO destroyed the platform. A large majority of my posts regarding repair solutions for defects in Apple products were removed for violating TOS in multiple sub reddits.

lol. Reddit has gone to **** so this would be the final nail in the coffin.
Guess you haven't seen their earnings report from yesterday

Reddit has always struggled to make money. Keep that in mind going forward.
Ever since Reddit started sellig more ads and lending its data to train Google's and OpenAI's A.I., it's losses have shrunk, they're still growing users, and they are generating free cash flow now.

  • Daily Active Uniques (“DAUq”) increased 51% year-over-year to 91.2 million
  • Weekly Active Uniques (“WAUq”) increased 57% year-over-year to 342.3 million
  • Revenue increased 54% year-over-year to $281.2 million
  • Ad revenue increased 41% year-over-year to $253.1 million, and Other revenue increased 691% year-over-year to $28.1 million
  • Gross margin was 89.5%, an improvement of 530 basis points from the prior year
  • Net loss was $10.1 million, as compared to net loss of $41.1 million in the prior year
  • Adjusted EBITDA was $39.5 million, as compared to $(35.4) million in the prior year
  • Operating cash flow was $28.4 million, an improvement of $82.5 million from the prior year
  • Free Cash Flow was $27.2 million, capital expenditures were $1.2 million

They'll probably turn profitable by next year.

Wait what??? What is hidden?
I currently don’t have the premium membership because I don’t want to spend the $50. When I signed up for it, it was maybe $35 but it expired so if I wanted to start up again, it would be $50. Yes I know that’s not going to break my bank, but there’s something about putting a $50 bill down for trivial reasons.

I don’t think the parts of the forms behind the paywall are that significant. I believe it was some for sale categories and something else but I can’t remember.

You do realize parts of Macrumors forums are behind a paywall right?

Wait what??? What is hidden?

Yeah because that is quite literally not the same thing.

If you pay $50 a year your payment goes towards the upkeep of macrumors. Such as their web hosting and server maintenance.

In return you are getting an ad free experience. You also get access to a members only forum.

The reason it isn’t a paywall is because macrumors isn’t charging you money to access high profile forums or news article.

Reddit would be charging you to access posts that are high traffic.

Macrumors offering a vip package is no different than going to a bar and you pay for VIP seating. yoh still have the same exact music and drinks but you don’t have to deal with the crowds (in this case ads) and you have your own private section(in this case a private forum).

Many forums have Them. It’s basically the general chat forum that we have now on macrumors but for the vip members. Aka nothing special.

So no macrumors is not a paywall. Your user experience is not hampered if you’re not a paid vip. And the only reason you get vip is if you legally want to block ads while supporting the website.

All online firms are comically low innovation.

Their only step forward is add costs, reduce service. Then they become the dinosaur for the new generation to decimate.

We should have laws in place in this country where we can opt out of giving our information to AI. And if this plan gets implemented, I’ll have no problem deleting my 12 year old Reddit account.
I dare say your activity has already been archived and won't be touched when you delete your account. It might not be public but I bet they'll keep it for indexing AI against.

I'll admit it; every once in a while I really miss Reddit. I'm not going back though.
Agreed. At its best, Reddit could be a really special place. I had a lot of very meaningful and worthwhile interactions on Reddit and I miss the platform that was able to foster those experiences. What it’s become now is a huge loss, despite the low lows that undeniably populate Reddit’s history.

He's talking about pr0n in case it wasn't obvious. Steve Huffman is trying to say they want to bite into the OnlyFans market but saying that out loud in an investor call is a bit crass, no? It's one of Reddit's biggest content drivers. How do we know? Because they said it themselves in their IPO docs. Or to be more precise, they said legislation in some states that aims to restrict minor's access to pr0n could significantly hurt Reddit's bottom line. That's the kind of company Reddit is at the moment, they're worried kids not being able to access pr0n on Reddit means their company will suffer.

Reddit is a pr0n site pretending to be a place of learning or "discussion."

R.I.P Aaron Swartz. What could have been.
