If I post a URL link to a Reddit page in a forum post, it gets converted into Media, thus displaying the entire Reddit page in the forum post.
How can this be avoided?

OK, this will work if only I will remember next time.
However, in your case, even when converted to media it didn’t display the whole page like it happened to me.

It's best to use the link format rather than the media one as it'll display all the contents within that post. I'm not sure if there's code to insert to limit text though.

But I am only writing the URL.
The site is converting it to a Media posting.

Click the brackets in the tool bar to reveal the BBcode then you can edit the link with that unfurl="false" tag like in @arn's example in post #4. Then you will just get a link.
