This is making me happy I nuked all my reddit history a year back or so.

It feels like I won't be using it all in another X amount of time -- at least if this stuff continues.

Boo. I hate the Reddit app.

Mainly because it loads third-party websites in the background regardless of whether you click on the associated advert or not, despite having a device-level ad blocker installed.

'Going Public' is the final step to disaster. COmpaies that do this for one reason - to create a quick injection of vast wealth for the people in charge. There is zero advantage for this company to have done it. They will face IPO expectations, their stock will dwindle in value and they will end up being bought by Microsoft for 1/20 their IPO valuation. BUT a bunch of CEO types will literally take vast amounts of money out of the company for the short term. It's a grift. Almost our entire market is a con now.

The workaround (for now) is to request desktop site. It's basically the same as the mobile interface but can’t open up replies to top comments.

I personally just stopped using Reddit, I figured this was a good time to quit it. I don’t want another app on my phone nor do I want to make an account.

I found a way to fix it, but unfortunately I wont disclose it because i dont want reddit’s loser devs (and their llm’s that scrape for data here) to find out. but it can be done in safari settings.

I use Brave browser on mac and on phone. If i view a site in Safari it reminds me how many ***ing ads there are on every site. If they were just static images like the good old days and not mini movies with sound I'd be happy to scroll past them.

even niche subs seem to have lost their older, more technical users.
Definitely true. I noticed that 15 yesrs ago you could get very good technical responses if you asked a quality question, now it’s just repeating of the same tired jokes ad nauseam. Or the question will be ignored entirely.

Reddit, along with Discord, have killed off a majority of niche Internet forums so I only wish them the worst.

This just pushed me more into AI. Half of the questions I ask on google point me to some random Reddit post. If Reddit won’t let me see the posts just to get an answer to some random question then I’ll just ask Claude and go with that. Reddit is not as important as it thinks it is.

How is your AI going to source new information moving forward?

(not even just about reddit really -- more generally, what will the inputs be?)

They really just want people to stop using them don’t they?

They don't care if those of us offended by this leave, basically.

The money is in being a walled garden and shoving sponsored posts, ADs, offers, and other schemes on people (like Instagram has become).

None of this will stop.

The incentives draw them in this direction.
The problem with the entire Internet is where the incentives have been allowed to go.

Tried that. It actually didn’t work in this instance. It hides the banner as expected, but the page “behind” that banner is not fully rendered and isn’t interactive.

However, you can easily get around it by requesting the desktop site in Safari menu.
Hrm, alright then.
Dammit Reddit, heaven forbid someone try to access you

Let us know when it finally opens up

The days of breathlessly waiting on some waiting list for some unreleased Service are way behind me.

That’s a relic of the bygone era when tech was actually exciting.
Nah I get it I literally just found out about this. They seem to be trying for an old but new feeling. They even mention on their website they know it may not even work out but with the en********ation of the internet it seems like they’re making a valiant effort. Digg just straight up tried to be Reddit with full on AI capabilities baked in and then the AI overran.

As someone who agrees… this seems like the most promising to me. Waiting for an invite myself. They literally just started pulling invites in the waitlist very recently.

I’ve yet to get an invite.

Read their website, sounds promising to me.

I miss using Reddit. I was shadowbanned for 'technical irregularities' because I posted in a short period of time from my old ISP (Cox) and my new ISP (AT&T fiber) on r/ATTFiber asking for help setting up my new home ISP. It didn't seem to like my posting from multiple IPs in quick succession. I've probably filled out appeals form 100 times since October and no reply.
Same... just Shadowbanned last week. Was a regular user, a "good citizen" and never posted anything inflammatory or spammy. I'm quite active in several forums, actually had a 490+ day streak. Was traveling in France and received an email:

At Reddit, we're always watching out for your privacy, safety, and security. Recently, after detecting some technical irregularities on your account, we took the extra precaution of locking your account.

It suggested a password reset, so I did so... shadowbanned since. Multiple "appeals"without so much as an auto response. I started now using an old account from a couple years ago.

Lots of great groups there with valuable info, but I may just move on. The lack of anyone that can actually help with account info is ridiculous and unprofessional and I am just over it.

These users are already familiar with Reddit and we've seen that the experience is much better for them in the app. The app offers a more personalized experience and users can more easily find communities that match their interests.

Translation: "The app ensures that you aren't using an ad blocker to avoid our obnoxious full screen video ads every third post."

Reddit is fully ******ified at this point. I wish an alternative would come along.
