Nice. I use both Apple's Maps and Google Maps. I have no problems with either so I like to go back and forth and use both just for fun. It's a win-win situation for me...

So it still dims the screen, even when it's plugged into a power source in the car???? There is absolutely no reason for this. It should dim to conserve battery when not plugged in, but should never dim when it is plugged in. This is the sole reason I haven't been using Google Maps, and was waiting for them to release an update which removed this, as they've been getting hammered in their own Maps forums for this. If this is still there, they've specifically chosen to ignore their customers feedback.

I ran the updated version of Google Maps on my iPhone 5 (iOS 6.1), on battery, navigating all the way to work today (about 55 miles, with 6 turns), and the screen never dimmed once. (I also have auto brightness set on the phone, and auto-lock set to never, FWIW).

Requires iOS 6. Goddammit. I stayed on iOS 5.1.1 so that I could keep Google Maps on my phone, but now I can't have the shiny new app!

Running it on my iPad Mini. Still no My Places (aka My Maps). Grrr.

Why didn't they use the new font that you can find on the desktop version...kind of weird.

Sooo why not upgrade? Google Maps has been in the App Store since December.

Apple Maps has gotten better. Plus, I really like the fact that I can lock my phone when using maps, and when I need to make a turn, the screen turns on to show me where I need to turn. I still have Google Maps installed on my phone just in case Apple Maps fails me (which it did when I drove up to Maine for the 4th of July).

The detailed maps of malls and airports are amazing. Even down to the jetways in major airports. It's the attention to those kinds of small details that makes Google Maps really outshine Apple Maps, in my opinion. Apple is still trying to get roads and POIs in the right places and Google has moved on to mapping the insides of malls and airports.

The Yelp-sourced POI/location data is crap, plain and simple.

Apple needs to start over, devote a whole team to it and fix the location data once and for all. Set up semi-monthly Agile sprints and issue rolling updates on a regular basis. There should also be a way to check on the status of our own problem reports we have submitted to Apple Maps.

Now, back to the discussion of the Google Maps update...

That's great!
Thanks for sharing your opinion in a non-related Apple Map thread.

I prefer Apple Maps as well. It is related because this is an Apple Rumor site.

Apple Map is so much better integrated in the iOS that other maps are just out of place.

I don't need anything Google anymore. They can keep their maps on android for all I care.

Wow these maps stink. All the roads are the wrong colour. The UK has a standard for colours used on maps for the many classes of roads and this doesn't conform to the colours. Any Brit looking at these will find them extremely difficult to use. Motorways should be blue, Trunk A roads red, other A roads green, b roads yellow and lesser non-classified roads white.

Google's web maps site has also switched colouring also. Making them completely unusable. I've filled may bug reports with them and they admit the problem but say it will take them a while to fix it.

I prefer the Google maps because the traffic is easier to see when zoomed out...the Apple maps use a red dotted line, which is not as easy to see. Other than that, they are both decent maps. I check the two routes home before I leave the office and having the traffic visible makes all the difference in the world...

As I've said before, it's quite easy to be a fan of something without being stupid about it.

User tech4all was chastising user Skika for sharing his statement "I prefer Apple maps," complaining that this forum is filled with Apple propaganda. Not only is it inconsiderate to chastise a fellow Macrumors member for having a preference, but his expectations are unfortunate seeing as he's clearly in the wrong forum.

Your reply has nothing to do with stupidity. It's not stupid to have a preference for Apple Maps over other alternatives, as there are multiple variables for multiple personality types in multiple use cases that could lead to a preference one way or another. Perhaps the convenience of using Siri, in a city where Apple maps is fairly accurate for user Skika, is the reason he has that preference.

At the end of the day, its just one app vs. another. What shouldn't be tolerated is people trying to shame others for having a preference.

What?? This makes no sense. Aren't these forums also an avenue for diagnosing problems? Are we not to critique anything now?

I wasn't replying to tech4all for making a critique about software, I was replying to tech4all chastising a Macrumors forum member for having a preference. You clearly didn't comprehend the difference before. Can you now?

I hate this type of comments!!!! So that gives you the right to be stupidly blind?

Cause I'm not fooled by the distortion field... GOOGLE MAPS IS WAY BETTER THAN APPLE MAPS.. PERIOD!

You lack reading comprehension. Again: User tech4all was chastising another MacRumors member for preferring Apple Maps. If you prefer Google Maps, I nor anyone else should make you feel bad for that decision. At the end of the day, it's software, and everyone has a different use case.

By the way, everyone thinks everyone else is in some sort of distortion field because they prefer one thing over another. Mac and iPhone users at-large are called sheeple by many die-hard PC users. Who gives a *****. No one can consider every variable and criteria another stranger makes for their purchases.

One thing that Apple's Maps does that drives me nuts is the fact that it stays at the same zoom level during turn-by-turn no matter how fast you're going. Other maps apps (haven't tried today's Google update, but the previous version did this) will zoom out as you speed up. This is useful because you can see what's coming up a few miles down the road. Apple's maps doesn't do this. Instead, it stays zoomed in all the way all the time. Very annoying.

That is my main/only complaint about Apple maps. I want to see various degrees of AHEAD so I can strategize and make better driving decisions.

That being said, if on-route you hit "Overview" and then the location button on the bottom left (looks like an arrow), you can see a bird's eye view of your route as it follows your coordinates and direction. You can zoom in and out as you please. This works for me and hopefully you as well.

One less step would be ideal though. Knowing each day more and more about how software development works, down the road I believe Apple will improve that specific need. (pun intended)

Apple maps has something Google does not... it makes you laugh. 40% of the times the address is wrong, it takes me to the wrong place or will not find nor interpret the address right. It is very tricky/ risky.

I must be one of the lucky ones then, I don't have any of those issues with Apple Maps.

Many here (not you KdParket) are so self-centered in their perceptions. If it doesn't work for them, it works for NO ONE ELSE EVER despite the U.S. being a country of 300 million people spread over 4 million square miles.

I as well prefer  maps for it's integration into iOS. That's not to say that I am completely happy with Apple Maps, but for turn by turn navigation, it has never gotten me lost. That being said, when I'm up at school and don't have a car, I rely on Google Maps for public transportation still.

Apple Maps works just fine. In fact in several instances it worked better than google maps on my iPhone.

I'm pretty sure user skika got called out because this thread really has nothing to do with Apple maps at all. I don't know why people just can't comment on the new Google map features (which this thread is actually about) without always having to turn into an Apple vs Google thread. At least I think that was his premise but I could be wrong.

Because Apple and Google are at war for your preference in many things, including maps. It's relevant. It's on topic.

I can relate to the sentiment but my point here is that we should let people do what they do on a Mac/Apple forum: talk about Apple/macs. Anything else and the expectations are foolish.
