The best way to update is to delete your existing app, then go into the 'App Store' app, go to the updates section, click on the 'Purchased' section, click on 'not on this phone', scroll down to to 'Skype' and click install.

This will install the latest version.

Or just search for Skype in the App Store after deleting it and install it again (which should install the new version).

Companies like Skype and Apple should start getting busted for showing such unrealistically high-quality screenshots of their video call apps. Nobody gets a picture like that, even over ideal network and lighting conditions.

Skype is an MS product. It's so great on iphone and even android. But on their own platform, it's slow, crashes and looks ugly. I don't get it.

I'm excited. Skype is the only way that I have to communicate some of my close friends. The iOS app has always been severely lacking, hopefully this greatly improves upon it.

Just tried it. Had to delete and reinstall the new version. But awesome! No weird delays like there were before. Much much faster.

Glad to hear that. Do you delete your conversation history from time to time? I figure that might help. The old app often froze when opening my best friend's conversation. I have never cleared it in like 8 months of use.

No not at all. Makes sense that would speed it up. I just deleted the huge multi-people conversations. But now, doesn't matter. It's just fast.

Will it allow for reliable receiving of calls this time?

I tried to use Skype as a VoIP phone with an old iPhone, but it only received Skype calls if the phone was active with the Skype app in the foreground... lame.

I've had terrible reliability with FaceTime to be honest. That's my only gripe with it. Quality and ease of use is definitely better, however, often when I call someone it rings about 7-8 times before they get their first ring. Also if I call two times in a row sometimes it doesn't even register; it'll be sitting there ringing and on the other end they're not even getting a call. This is with home WiFi, and FaceTime Audio by the way - and my network is fine.

Skype sucks.. thought it was the best after facetime.. but it barely connects to the other user.. have to try multiple times to do so.. n when it does its video quality is **** compared to other competitors out there.. Tango works really well for me.

Ultimately it's not so much about the app or the service but what those who you need to contact actually use. If you are in touch with people or groups that use Skype then you are using Skype, whether you like it or not.

I'm pretty sure most MS haters are probably hating them because it is (was?) fashionable...

How could that even be fashionable? I hate MS because their products suck, they keep intentionally violating standards to push their market power, and they bought Rare (maker of Goldeneye for N64) just to kill it off. The one time I wanted to use Windows in my VM in months, I had a horrible experience just trying to install a few things thanks to Windows "security". It's so bad that even free Linux-based stuff is better.

Skype, by the way, is only useful for friends who can't use anything else. It's got really bad AV quality and lots of glitches.

I occasionally have to use Skype because one of my friends can't use anything else (Windows user, and FaceTime makes his iPad mini get hot). The app UI is already fine. The problem is that it always has some kind of glitch when I try to use it and has the worst sound and video quality I've ever seen.

Apple, what happened to your promise about FaceTime being an open standard? Do it already! FaceTime also has its problems, but it's pretty good, and I don't want to have to deal with Skype at all.

Group chat (at least, audio) is coming to iOS 8 / Yosemite.

I'd love to use FT all the time, but the lack of cross-platform kills it. Apple will never budge on that, sadly.

It's worse than single-platform. It only works on a select few Apple OSs and devices. No support for Lion or earlier, and you're forced to do video chats only on Mountain Lion. You need Mavericks for the revolutionary new audio-only chat . And now group chat ONLY in Yosemite. Worst of all, Apple shut it down for some iOS 6 users. All of this with ZERO integration with Messages, instead using a clunky, separate FaceTime app. What were they thinking??!

It seems like this update removed a few features from the app. Has anyone figured out how to look at the profile of a friend, delete a message, or edit a message?

It seems to me that ever since Microsoft acquired Skype, they've been removing features, and generally making it suck. I'm still annoyed that they removed the screen-sharing ability in a newer version of the desktop client, and then forced people to upgrade to that newer version.

I once really quite liked Skype. It's such a shame.
