The amount of data it uses is directly related to the speed of your test. If you have an amazing LTE connection like yours (which I'm quite jealous of BTW), it'll use more data.

I just tried this over EDGE and it consumed a few hundred KB in both directions.

Yep. It has to work like that. A few KB back and forth is a poor way to test LTE, while sending 80 megs over EDGE is going to take a very very long time.

RIP Ookla. No longer will you cause bloodshed to those who groom you. :(

Yea, looking like it's time based.

Ow.

The old one was set size data package based I imagine.

Ow.

I don't think so. I think nothing's changed. I used to test EDGE, 3G, and LTE devices with the old version and it took about the same amount of time to test all three.

The only difference is now people are checking.

Hurray we all pinpointed the issue! *I've always kept an eye on all OEM and 3rd party app data traffic.*

(My speeds aren't that great, my max speeds are 66 Mbps and the record speeds I've seen on Macrumors is 89 Mbps)

I can't help but wonder if my cable company gives me different speeds depending on what I'm connecting to. Amazon Instant Video, a competitor of FiOS movies, is extremely slow. Theoretically, the ISP could easily give you less bandwidth than advertised, almost none on movie sites, and all the bandwidth it can find when you're running a speed test :D

----------

The site speedtest.net is flawed. Since it uses Flash, it gives you low speeds if you're using an iMac G5 or something.

Really? Those speeds are better than the best cable packages. This is where I actually fear what I described above. Do videos on YouTube and such actually load quickly for you?

This app fixes the wanky wifi speed differences between my computer and iPhone 5. With the old app, wifi speed on my iMac was around 55 Mbs DL and my iPhone topped out at 25 Mbs. With the updated app, they are both close to 55 Mbs download speeds.

Is there a good alternative of a speedtest app in the appstore that's not gonna burn through our data plans?

Even though I have 6GB a month, I won't be using this app many more.

since the whole point of an app that measures the connection speed is so users can gloat to their friends.

Since the whole point of articles like this is so the website can gloat about the number of page hits or number of written articles.

. . . Seriously though apps like this do have a real world use. To compare theoretical speeds (what your ISP says you should get) and real world speeds (what you actually get). And in this light the app is quite good at doing this.

You all do know the hidden cat trick right? Well if you dont once the test is done pull down the meter thing and keep doing it youll see ookla the cat

My God, these LTE speeds are amazing. I live in Los Angeles and I get only get 25/20 on the best of days.

I'm very happy with this, but still jealous. :)

Also, most of the time I really only get 5 down and 3 up. Still good enough for all the things I do on my phone, but still...

That's a little concerning right there, HSPA+ or LTE connection?
