Well not only YouTube, but big Hollywood movies are shot on red too. But those are crazy expensive red cameras, tens of thousands of dollars

It is the package that makes it able to shoot a feature film, not just the sensor, the sensor on these cameras is high enough quality to shoot a feature. This Apple package is essentially a Sensor, a battery and a Lens.

Its true some RED cameras are used to film major motion pictures and TV shows. BUT, our world is still dominated by Arri and then to some extent Sony. And there is a reason for it.

RED has come a long way...but its all subjective. I have my personal thoughts towards RED which I wont get in to. Suffice to say I do use them on professional shows, and will use them if that's whats on tap. But they are never my first choice.

That’s actually a pretty good deal, red cameras are very expensive. Good value for what you get. I can see amateur filmmakers buying these.

That's most likely the target market for this package. It is a good deal and well curated. Savvy buyers can probably get similar equipment for less especially buying second hand but overall not a bad price for what one is getting.

Interesting. Didn't know these camera's were issues in filming large scale movies. I imagine for these types of price points, you would expect results.
Even more interesting is the Raven is an entry level camera kit. Their cheap one.:Do_O Double that $15K to get an Epic 8K or triple that $15K + add another $4.5K and you can get the Weapon 8K.

Red keeps a kinda running tally of movies, TV shows, and other stuff that was Shot on Red. Tons of stuff you'l recognize

The Raven was originally announced last year. And was supposed to be a compact camera for gimbal and drone work. Somewhere down the line RED pulled their usually schtick..no one heard boo about it, and then the Scarlet W came out.

Interesting they made a deal with Apple to sell off their stock as kits. Probably also means there is no upgrade path and support for this body will disappear quickly.

Don't be completely fooled by that tally. It lists shows that employ RED. Many of those shows only used REDs for specific shots, usually FX based ones. So, while the show might be an Arri show, they used a RED for certain FX shots...and RED gets to say it was used to "shoot" the movie. Its not false advertising..but its a bit misleading.

I did not know. That's really disappointing. Body support is really everything.

This is not expensive for a professional camera. Some of the comments on here are evidence that it's dumb to sell it exclusively in the Apple Store. They should be selling it at B&H, and other pro photography shops... not at a store that primarily sells smartphones. The whole thing is just click bait to get attention and it worked.

I have no dog in the fight, but they seem pretty honest about movies shot on RED vs scenes shot on RED. When you click on a movie (examples:Hacksaw Ridge, Assassin's Creed, Fate of the Furious) there's a description line that says "Some scenes shot on RED". Other movies don't have that line. I guess it's akin to "images simulated" and "sequences sped up". The truth is told, but you're really not supposed to look for it.

It's not. And RED is primarily responsible for lowering the ceiling on prices for everything.

Good to know. Didn't used to be that way.

The DRAGON sensor is better, but their previous sensors had way to much NOISE in the lower stops. They would advertise this large stop range and low light shooting, but those low light shots would always have to be denoised. They where almost Unusable. I also think they over engineered the .R3D codec. Their are too many options for ColorSpace. I am as technical as you can get and I find it totally annoying to have so many colorspaces and gamma spaces. It's quite ridiculous, not because I don't understand them, but because everyone else doesn't. It leads to more problems in the Post Process. Also their body and accessories look too much like a bad 90's SciFi Alien movie.

ARRI has really dominated with a clean camera astetics, body, sensor and Post Production pipeline. They are more expensive, but they have dominated RED in professional acquisition in every way. I would much rather work with ARRI MXF, or ProRes than .R3D anyway of the week.

Granted, I'm not against a beautiful image and one can be had with each. You just need to know what your doing, like everything else in the Pro Film world.

They're more reliable, they are more filmic looking, they don't require stupid internal filters, They are more intuitive with design and menus, etc etc etc.

Yeah...I'm an Arri fan :) But I come from celluloid...and I remember the whole digital revolution...F900s (ugh) etc...

One of the best on the market. This is the most expensive third party device the Apple Store sells.

Ahh, that's what I saw iJustine playing with in my FB newsfeed. Didn't make any sense to me then but it does now.
Do Fandroid's have a pin up girl too, or do they just fantasise about Larry and Sergey in leather chaps? ;)

I am trying to work out exactly what is exclusive to Apple about this? Is just the bundle of camera, accessories and FCPX licences exclusive to Apple? I can't images RED selling the Red Raven only via Apple and not at B&H etc.

Maybe this means they'll actually start taking FCPX seriously, because in its current iteration, very few people willing to drop $15K on a RED are using it.

I had no idea about Red Digital Cinema, so I hit Wikipedia, read this, and actually laughed out loud: "The company started with the intent to deliver an affordable 4k digital cinema camera." Maybe we could use the Red Raven on Candid Camera to film people reacting to the price of the cheap model.

The only thing funnier is that the first thing they did with their prototype, in their noble pursuit of the masses, is go after professional filmmakers.

Glad Henry Ford didn't abandon his dream of affordability the way these guys seem to have.

Almost makes you think Apple makes a computer that can edit RAW R3D files. OK, so buy the camera now, shoot for a year, then wait until 2018 to edit it.. o_O
Um, what?

I color for a living, but my MacPro was purchased in 2010 and I use a CUBIX.

Yeah. And what an amazing living that must be with that "super-pro" setup! LOL

But now even ARRI is pushing SMPTE MXF over ProRes, for a lot of reasons.

OUCH. You clearly have no clue what you're going on about. Wow. As if the WRAPPER had anything whatsoever to do with quality! LOL! As if "MXF" was a codec or something or in and of itself had ANY relevance whatsoever! As if there were even any such thing as an "SMPTE MXF". Just some blowhard that picked up fragments of tech talk on the net without so much as an inkling of what it's all about or actually means… hilarious.

Yeah. We'll just completely ignore the fact that Final Cut Pro X is the most installed pro-level NLE on the market. Or that owning a RED has ZERO relevance in anyone's choice of NLE. So we'll just make crap up as we go along to fit our tiny, narrow perspective and knowledge on matters.

Er, yeah. Like I said: clueless. RED has been native since v10.0.6. (2012!) Native Redcode Raw support as well as MXF.

(note the part at 3m45s)

Oops… oh well.

Here's a question to you pros out there. Has RED managed to develop a brand image similar to Apple? It's the cool brand to use? It seems that way to me but I am in no way a professional camera person.
[doublepost=1501672250][/doublepost]
I see the "red" brand and I can't stop thinking of Linustech's video where he blasts the company over overcharging for so many of their accessories.

Yeah because a computer geek turned You Tuber would know anything about the professional end of the video camera market... he's most likely upset he cannot afford them! I have to say I'm very surprised you've posted his video, considering he used to hate Apple products and slate them constantly.

Yeah, even a 5-second DuckDuckGo turned up a white paper on support from 2013. If he doesn't know, he's welcome to ask. But if he spouts off, he has an MR forum SmackDown coming.

B&H just announced last month they are starting to carry RED products, but looks like they are limited to the EPIC-W and SCARLET-W at the moment:

Nice to see RED expand into more "retail" establishments so people can see their products first hand before spending new car style money, but as a video professional I do think limiting the RAVEN to this Apple package is restricting. Wonder how long this exclusive will last. May be an effort from Apple to get people moving to higher end production back into FCP-X since most moved to Adobe/Avid.

No source needed. Avid has always been king in the professional world. There was a time with FCP had climbed the ladder and was competing with Avid.

The creation of FCP X largely dumped several of the needed pro features and it took years to get SOME of the back. In that time FCP X lost major ground to Avid and Premiere took its place as #2. Adobe's large advantage being the ability to shift around inside the Adobe Suite from App to App.

FCP X is virtually nonexistent in the professional world.
