I cant take it anymore. The dropped calls. The first word of every sentence getting chopped off. Now...my girlfriend returns to work for the first time with hers and there is a two mile radius where we have sporatic connection at best. We drove around for an hour and both of our phones did the same thing in the same spots. She cant even use the dam thing to call anyone after leaving work or on break.

Called Atnt and they show no problem. They even got an iPhone guy on, he suggested that it might just be a dead zone. Verizon worked without issue. This sucks.

One more day, but Ill tell you, unless things get WAAAAY better by tommorow the phones are going back.

Steve, you should have worked it out with Verizon.

Atnt ....FOAD Grrrrrrrrr

Buh bye.

(Do you people need our validation or something?)

Simply use the carrier that provides you the best coverage/service for your area. If it's not ATT, and ATT is unsatisfactory, then no iPhone for you. Sorry. Either that or move somewhere else.

Dropped calls has been a problem with me as well.

I had Verizon for a about a year and a half before I got my iPhone and never had any dropped calls around my city.

Yet, I have had several dropped calls in the first week of my iPhone.

Just last night I got 3 voicemails that were left 2 days ago.

Maybe AT&T service is different in each city, I dunno. But the service is pretty average down here.

If they would have went with Verizon, they would have lost me as a customer. I can't stand the way Verizon treats its customers.

Interesting. I have had several problems in the past with Verizon and really liked their customer support BUT I have heard others say just what you have.

I just got lucky I guess :D

Where I live, AT&T has excellent awesome service. The iPhone my mom bought is awesome, and she loves it and couldn't be happier. Saying "the iPhone sucks!! avoid at all costs!!!" because YOU happen to live in an AT&T dead area is just about the most ignorant thing ever.

Exactly, I will never understand why people say the phone sucks because AT&T service isn't great in the area. If the phone was randomly shutting off, or crashing, or was the cause of the dropped calls, thats the phone. If the service isn't available in some areas, thats AT&T's issue.
Lets face it, depending on where you live, you are going to have good carriers and crappy ones, thats just the way it works.
Do research, find out who has the best service where YOU use your phone, and go with them. Picking a carrier solely based on phone selection is stupid. Thats the only reason I don't have an iPhone, AT&T isn't great here, T-Mobile is. At the end of the day, I want to be able to make a reliable phone call, even though I really want an iPhone :)

Look, Im frustrated. I spend $1200 on two of these things. I expect them AND the service to work as good as my $30 phone. I understand all the crap you guys ar e beating me up about but I have a right to be frustrated and as long as I am a user here I have a right to post.
And everyone else has the right to give you their opinions about your posts.

I love my Cingular / ATT service for many years now and I would not have switched to Verizon if they had the iPhone.
I almost never have any dropped calls unless I travel to some hole somewhere.

I think what's made Apple over the years is that you've only had to deal with Apple. I'm personally iffy about them teaming up with phone companies.

@OP, better luck next time, and do plenty of research before buying. :)

Actually the thread title IS accurate. If you live in an area where ATT coverage sucks, you SHOULD avoid the iPhone. Because both Apple and ATT are engaging in false advertising by selling products in areas where they don't work as advertised. Fewest dropped calls is an outright lie in my area, and the reception is SO poor or non-existent that the phone DOES NOT WORK as a basic cellphone.

Let the buyer beware -- the horrible ATT network in some areas makes the iPhone just an expensive iPod and it won't work well as a cellphone. So avoid buying one or you will face the wrath of people who are smarter than you!

If you have an ATT reception problem, there is a great thread with very helpful people and information at:

I agree. I live in LA... and ATT sucks here. Alas... Ive had cingular for 6months now... and dealt with it. got an iphone this morning... guess that means Ill continue to deal with it... but seriously. I hope it gets better.

Please don't misapply your personal cellphone reception issues with everyone else.

The reason I have been with Cingular for the last 9 months is because they get heads-and-shoulders better reception where I live. In fact I had Verizon before and it simply would not work at my house. We beat on them for a long time. I would have to go stand in the street to make calls, yet with Cingular it is 5 bars in the worst part of the house.

The reality is every cell phone provider has different areas of strengths, and unfortunately as a consumer we have to do the work to determine who works best for us where we need to use the phone most. No provider is universally better everywhere. Every single one of them are hit and miss. I have used them all.

So while it might be nice for you if they used Verizon, it would suck for me. I am glad they chose Cingular for the service provider, because they work so well for me. If they had chosen Verizon I would not have one, because it would be unusable. You have my sympathies, sincerely. There is always a chance that coverage will improve in your weakest areas, and the only way you got a shot at that is if you contact AT&T and work with them on the issue. If not, it is not going to happen.

sob sob sob

life is pain

seriously if dropped calls are your biggest complaint in life, maybe you should get a livejournal and post over there instead.

odd, I find at&t to be average here. been with at&t...cingular...whatever was before cingular, no problems.

Well, LA is such a large area, he could be in a section that has poor coverage by AT&T. There are definitely areas where Verizon has poor coverage too (and the same with Sprint and T-Mobile).

IT JUST DEPENDS!!!

Which is why these blanket "AT&T sucks for me, so they must suck for everyone, and because of that the iPhone also sucks and so does Apple for going with AT&T" statements are so annoying and not very helpful.

For the record, I have NO problems with AT&T coverage in the LA area, from Thousand Oaks down to Orange County, and from Santa Monica to Claremont. It's not "perfect", and it could definitely be better in some areas... but for the most part, it works where I've needed it.

I will say though, the iPhone seems to have slightly poorer reception than my SLVR... but I'm not about to go back to the SLVR :p

Geez -- let the guy have his say -- this is a FORUM where people should be able to express their opinion without being called a whiner or negative. It sucks when you use a cellphone a lot and the carrier can't deliver decent service but you REALLY want an iPhone.

Where I live Verizon is GREAT and AT&T sucks royally. But I'm putting up with the dropped calls and crappy reception pretty much all over town because I have been waiting for this phone for over a year. And I love it. I don't love AT&T or EDGE and too bad if you don't like a negative opinion.

Start a Pollyanna thread somewhere and don't sully yourself in other people's truths if you can't bear to hear someting "bad" about the precious iPhone. Glad you all love it so much. So do I. You're lucky AT&T works in your area. But have a little consideration for people who aren't as "lucky" as you but still want to have an iPhone.

Ironic how people whine about the 'whiners'!!

Thank you!! A rational being in a sea of childishness. I love the whole "Polyanna" thing, you nailed it brother.

AT&T coverage is terrible where I live (SGV of Los Angeles) and where I travel (New England) which is principally why I am still on Sprint which works. I'd love an iPhone despite its shortcomings and I'd love better cell coverage and service. I think that's true for anyone. The problem lies in that for many people, Apple gave us a choice of great phone, but it no workee. If they want to sell it in the marketplace it should actually work, a small thing to ask. And I don't think you should have to be a rocket scientist or a beta tester to figure out whether the phone will actually work or not.

Lol

Yes almost as rational as "the iPhone sucks because I live in an AT&T dead zone" posts.

That's funny!

Hmmm...okay:

"the iPhone is GREAT because I live in an AT&T dead zone"

That DOES sound more rational!

Seriously, for anyone who lives in an AT&T dead zone (and there are A LOT of us if you're reading the posts) you can't have a functional iPhone where AT&T isn't providing adequate coverage.

And that SUCKS.

For everyone who lives in "live" AT&T zones -- congratulations and may that reception spread to the rest of their promised coverage areas. It will only sell more iPhones when AT&T's half of the equation matches the quality of Apple's contribution.
