What about a hybrid drive?

They're part SSD and part HDD.

They are a happy medium between the speed of an SSD while having the storage capacity of an HDD, along with the MUCH lower pricepoint.

You can get one for approximately $125USD, which I cannot convert off of the top of my head, but significantly less than what you're thinking of spending.

I just have a Seagate Momentus XT in 500GB I put in a week ago and it makes a huge difference without sacrificing price.

If it were only as great as you make it sound everyone would buy one. The Seagate Momentus XT does not offer the speed of an SSD, it offers SSD-like performance and it has to learn your behavior to do so. While it is much better than a 7200 drive, it's not to take the place of an SSD. Also it's still susceptible to failing like any other standard hard drive, but you're right, it's a nice value in order to get better performance and more storage.
