I hope so. I'd rather have a smaller laptop.

I had mixed feelings too, but I'm over that. If I'm doing something like copying CDs or DVDs, I'll do that at home. I'm so used to never watching a physical DVD, but instead handbraking it and watching it on the hard drive. A lot more convenient.

And who installs software from a CD or DVD anymore? It's all downloaded over the internet now.

Really, the benefits of a smaller and lighter laptop far outweigh the convenience of having a CD drive on the occasion you need it. You can always pack an external CD drive in your backpack if you feel you need it, and the weight and size of it is not much larger than putting it into the laptop.

If you want a smaller Mac laptop, buy an Air. That's what they're there for. cMBP will be phased out, sorry.

I really have my doubts Apple is going to unveil any mac update this september. The invite only show iPhone cues and from what we've heard there won't even be any iPad update on this event.
So I guess it's going to be an iPhone/iPod/iWatch(??) event and everyone will be disappointed. Which is really bad for me since I'm a developer and I need a new mac ASAP. My 2008 13'' MacBook is showing it's age. Yeah... 2008...remember when 13'' MacBooks had dedicated graphics cards? Those were the times... :p
I've always been a skeptic that with Steve Jobs gone Apple would fail. Now I'm not that sure, It will take a lot of time but I'm not sure Apple will be able to backpedal from some of the mistakes it's doing and is going to take in the very near future.

Just picked up my rMBP today, should i just use it for the 13 days then return it on the 14th?

Very bad time to get a rMBP, new generation comes out this month or next month AT THE LATEST

Laptop is something you're going to use for years, just wait

The 13" MacBook Pro has NEVER had a dedicated graphics card. I don't know why so many people post otherwise.

You have an NVIDIA 9400, which is an integrated card with 256mb of shared graphics. Just because it isn't an intel card does not mean it isn't integrated.

As for the future, the 13" will never have a dedicated card, and the 15" is looking like it may lose it as well.

MBP refresh mid October.

It's going to include, Haswell, PCI-E ssd starting at 256gb, retina display, the usual ports, 8gb of ram and a bigger battery (due to the removal of the ssd slot which increases the internal capacity in the machine). Also it will probably feature an Nvidia 7**M gpu + $100 less.

In all honesty I was debating waiting for the refresh but if I really needed that much power in my lap I'd get an 27" iMac. As much as I like the MBP family line, I think I'll be perfectly happy with my Air and iMac purchase next year.

If you need a powerful laptop what uses is a 27" one you can't take anywhere because that's exactly what an iMac is?

I guess I'll have to do some research on this matter, but if you are right, and by the looks of it you know of what you're talking about, thanks for the correction.

For clarity, I have a 9400m and not a 9400 but I'm pretty sure you know that :D

The MBP is in dire need of a refresh to work well with Mavericks. Loads of people (myself included) are starting uni again this year and a new MBP is something a lot of students are going to need, especially with the new Haswell processors and Mavericks' power saving feature.

Every day, I check out Mac Rumors to see if there are any hints or updates on the MBP, but all I see is constant repeated posts about the new iPhones and less and less about Mac hardware updates.

pardon the caps lock & size. I HOPE THEY DO THIS

Hi Guys hope you're having a great month/ week so far!

A couple things:
- This is my first post here:)
- Tomorrow is my birthday ! :)
- Planning to come to US (NY) for family visit, timing depends on release MBP(r) lol
- I'm anxiously waiting to buy a macbook pro -or macbook pro retina. Usage: DJ'ing in clubs in the Netherlands.

Although DJ'ing is also very well possible with older models MBP (own a 2008 (!) model and work fine, I think it's time to buy another, got some issues with my screen and battery life.

Questions:
1- Do you thing MBP is going to stop production and continue with MBPr?
2- The Macbook pro's have always been favored by DJ's for the reliability. What do you guys think..are the "new" MBP retina going to change that? Do better/worse? Basically the hardware can be configured to be the same, but anatomically they differ, can't afford crashes and stuff like that on stage.
3- After studying the difference between MBP and MBPr I don't see any reason to buy a MBP and think I'm gonna get a MBPr. Am i overlooking something? What could possibly be a reason to not do so? (except for the cash)
4- Except for longer battery life, what are updates that you guys think are crucial in order to be " real " updates and in other words worth to buy a new MBP(r)?

Cheers!
Friendly Dutch Guy :D

ill they add finger print?

finger print on MBP ?? No more typing passwords !!!!

1 no
2 crashes? buy the best, it is an investment especially ram!
3 I like retina screen, you would enjoy it too, check some dj apps.
4 I'm getting the next version. Most likely October release.
5 buy whatever you want and if you take good care, it will last 6 + years.

No dedicated card? I think it might not be as terrible as people think

As a lot of people, I was concerned with the graphic performance of a new rMBP without a dedicated graphic card especially in terms of gaming performance.

After a little research, I'm pretty sure they will get rid of it. The gap is simply too short for the added-value of an extra chip. For those who still think that the Iris Pro 5200 is 20 % off the nvidia GT 650m, here is the latest review of the chip that shows pretty similar performance of the current Nvidia model. The chip of Intel is even better in some benchmarks than the GT 750 ! And the review is done with the i7 4750HQ which is not the fastest chip with Iris Pro Graphics 5200.

http://us.hardware.info/reviews/4776/intel-iris-pro-5200-graphics-review-the-end-of-mid-range-gpus

Moreover, if the rumor according by Semi Accurate is true ( Intel would be working on a special chip for Apple "with as much GPU as possible"), maybe the new chip would even be more performant from the one in the current model.

https://www.macrumors.com/2013/07/2...-high-end-haswell-processors-for-macbook-pro/

And as we know, Apple overclocked the Nvdia GT 650m to get faster performance. Maybe they will do something similar here.

It ends up that we could have best of all worlds: Faster CPU, faster SSD (45% faster in the Macbook Air!), slightly better or same graphical performance, huge battery life, Thunderbolt 2.0, 802.11ac and thinner chassis. Also, we can think that a system without a discrete chip will be cooler, so less noisy due to the fans.

If that happens, would be plenty enough for me!

Whatrumors?

Really looking forward to this update! However, this is macrumors, right? I get a bit confused sometimes...

I just sold my Late 2009 MBP for $620 CAD this morning. Anxiously waiting the refresh so I can buy another one to keep me happy for 3 more years!:cool::cool:

Refreshed MacBook Pros with Haswell Chips Coming in September?

Japanese website EMSOne [Google translation] (via Mac Otakara) summarizes a report from Taiwan's Want Daily claiming that Apple will launch the next-generation MacBook Pro with Intel’s latest Haswell processors in September of this year. The original report, which cites Taiwanese-based supply chain sources, does not appear to be available online, but the brief summary from EMSOne indicates that shipments from suppliers are planned to begin later this month.

It is unclear whether both Retina and non-Retina MacBook Pro models will be updated in this round, as Apple has been rumored to be phasing out the non-Retina models.

Prior to this news, additional recent reports have suggested that the Haswell MacBook Pro would arrive in the fall after they did not make an appearance at Apple’s annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) back in June. KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo originally predicted new MacBook Pros with Haswell processors at WWDC back in June, but later updated his prediction to suggest a mid-September release for the refreshed MacBook Pros.

Apple could presumably launch updated MacBook Pro models at any time, as Intel's power-efficient Haswell chips have been available for several months now, and low-power versions of the chips were included in Apple's June refresh of its MacBook Air lineup. Many have assumed, however, that a launch would not come until October in order to allow Apple, its customers, and the media to focus on the iPhone in September.

There is also evidence that suggests Apple vendors may be trying to run down existing MacBook Pro stock, with Best Buy and Amazon currently offering significant-back-to-school discounts on the MacBook Pro. Data from U.S. research firm NPD released last month also indicated that U.S. Mac sales were down in June compared to the previous June, despite the introduction of the new MacBook Airs, with the lack of a refreshed MacBook Pro lineup cited as a primary contributing cause.

PC laptops for much less than MacBook Air prices are coming with an Msata SSD and a 2.5" drive (either HDD or SSD). Apple could offer PCIe SSDs instead of the Msata drives and still offer a user upgradable 2.5" bay. Offer a 17" model too and with haswell, they'll actually be worth the asking price. It doesn't matter how ugly or heavy these PC laptops are, the Apple way would be everything they offer but with Mavericks not Windows 8 and with much better design.

I think if they are bringing new MacBooks out, they might tie it to the release of the new Mac Pro.

I just got a Mythlogic Chaos 1313 (Clevo W230st)--quad-core i7 Haswell, 256 Gb SSD, 750Gb hybrid drive, Nvidia 765, 16Gb ram. $1500. It is a little heavier than a macbook, but otherwise is pretty nice. One of the nice things was being able to order it without OS, so I could install Linux on it when I got it--no "Windows tax". Obviously not as cheap as some that are available, but the construction is also obviously not as cheap as others.

That's just the kind of system I'm on about but a Mac equivelent and less of the "Apple Tax".

Have you tried partitioning it and then turning it into a hackintosh? It would be interesting to see how that system stacks up against not just existing Macbook Pros but the lower end iMacs too.

No, I don't really see the point. If I really need some Mac-dependent bit of software, I can run it on my iMac. The whole reason you're paying the "Apple tax" is to get the completely integrated environment. If you're not getting that, then why bother with it? Without it, Mac OS X is just BSD unix with a glossy shell.

Glossy Shell? Sure, that's all it is

People "bother with the Mac" because it's a very mature GUI with nearly 30 years of interface development that runs ontop of BSD UNIX after running ontop of a co-operative multitasking dinosaur for nearly 15 years :)

New adopters, post-Intel and mostly post-iGadget like the Mac because it uses the same CPU family as their previous PCs for compatabilty and they like the UNIX-like underpinnings because it's familiar to anyone who's used non-Windows OSs on PCs before using a Mac.

The "Apple Tax" refers to Apple's legendary component price gouging, not simply paying more for a system for the priveledge of running their OS on their hardware.

As far as benchmarks are concerned, there's Geekbench results for an unreleased Haswell based Macbook with the product ID of AAPLJ45,1 running the benchmark under Mavericks here:

Tomorrow is the 24th... how many days does Japan have in September?
