just bought one

Already have an iPhone, but figured at $249 that is an amazing deal - even cheaper than a 8GB ipod touch - so I went ahead and bought it and will probably either resell or give as a gift. Great find!!!

bought one!

I bought one rightaway.. Apple's price was 349 USD with tax. These AT&T guys didnt even took tax from me :)

Nice bargain IMO. :) :apple:

Hmm so I'll be able to order this, unlock it after I receive it (to use with T-Mobile) and then get rid of my crappy Windows Mobile phone? Hmm...

Wow, what a steal! Been procrastinating the iPhone for months now and had yet to come up with a convincing argument to commit, what with being a slave to T-Mobile and having recently acquired an 8GB Touch and all (not to mention that I've been kind of holding out for iPhone 2.0). But I'm thinking this is a no-brainer. I mean, I still see unlocked/jailbroken 8GB iphone's on craigslist and eBay for $450+. So I'm thinking I could potentially unload my hacked Touch (with case) for at least $200, which means a mere $49 difference. Sorry, just giddily thinking out loud here...

One question, though. I've never purchased refurbs before and have reservations about quality. So am I going to get a product that, if I didn't know it was refurbed, I'd think was brand new?

A couple more quick questions. Does the AT&T logo come somehow branded on the thing, and after it's hacked does said logo forever remain at the upper left side of the screen? And, yes, I realize how fairly nitpickey this is, but I guess for comfort's sake I'd rather see my own service provider up there.

I talked to the online rep, then just to be sure called AT&T sales to make sure. The iPhones are exchanges (they had something wrong with them, were repaired, then repackaged). So they will come in original packaging with all the normal items an iPhone comes with. They are covered by the same initial warranty as a new iPhone (so if you have an issue it can be exchanged for a new one).

If you jailbreak your iPhone the carrier logo can be removed or changed to anything you want (T-Mobile, your name, nothing at all, etc.) The AT&T logo appears no where on the iPhone's actual body.

Just placed my order, thanks so much to OP!

Great info. Thanks for helping me blow $249! :D :p

Just got one too. As I was checking out, they were talking about activating my phone once I receive it. But I should be able to unlock it w/ no problem? No need to sign up with AT&T right?

Well unless the phone ships with an ATT rep, there's no way they can force you to activate the phone with ATT. They are assuming most people don't know any better and won't think to do anything but get an ATT plan.

At least that's what I think.

AT&T is so blissfully ignorant to jailbreaking/unlocking that the activation process of the iPhone is their insurance you will contract or buy a pay-as-you-go plan.

All of this is detailed as you check out btw (it even OKs giving the referb iPhone as a gift), read the box you're checking agree to! :D

As for the unlock, not sure if this is ok to post here but:

I didn't read anything about giivng it as a gift. Where did you find the part that says "it's OK giving the referb iPhone as a gift"? Can you maybe quote?

Thanks!

How's that possible since they won't sell it to someone outside the US? There isn't even an option for shipping outside the US. And, the only way not to pay tax is if you live in a state that doesn't charge sales tax, because AT&T won't sell you the phone if you live in a state where they don't have coverage (therefore not charging sales tax for not having a presence).

Do you think that they have these in stores at all? I would just rather go pick it up than order online.

Now I have to decide if I want to unlock and use it on T-mobile or switch to AT&T.

How can you tell if your phone is a refurb?

any markings on the phone itself, or does it state so within the settings of the phone?

what stops ppl from reselling these at the full retail price
