I don't know how anyone could possibly justify buying one of these over an Air. It defies logic.

Processor/RAM are deemed "enough" due to mainly using it for internet browsing at email. Lightest possible weight with a very high quality screen are the only things that matter. Hence, it's the right choice for those people. (I'm typing this on a 2015 13" MBP btw, so it has nothing to do with me preferring the 12" MB).

I don't have one, but the screen annihilates the one in the air. To me it looks better than my 13" rMBP.

The reason why you buy it is because it is more portable than the 13" air (footprint is way, way smaller. The 13" rMBP has a smaller width/height than the air already) while also having more usable screen resolution in scaled display modes (I'm pretty sure it goes up to 1680x1050 vs 1440x900 of the air)

I picked up a used one off ebay for 800.00 2 months ago. Replaced my 2013 Macbook Air. This device isn't slow at all for what I do. Photoshop, Final Cut Pro X 4k video editing both work perfectly fine. The rendering time for the completed work in Final Cut takes a bit longer then before, but overall its perfect. I don't miss USB ports one bit. I can just move files between devices using wireless or just plug in one cable to access a usb port if need be. But to have ports on the machine just to have them.. honestly.. I figured I would need them all the time. But I just changed my routine to access my files, everything just works for me at this point.

This is a very nice form factor with an excellent screen. It's too bad they crippled it's performance with that processor selection. Hoping the Skylake update makes this system useable given the size/weight is ideal.

I bought an early 2016 13" MBA last year for $720 on one of Best Buy's crazy sales. Six months later I decided to buy a 13" rMBP for $1100 (also from Best Buy) because I wanted a retina screen. I then realized the shorter battery life and the pretty big difference in weight wasn't worth the "upgrade" from my MBA.

Needless to say I returned the rMBP and I'm now more than happier with my MBA.
Shorter battery life? I have early 2015 rMBP 13 inch and I hardly connect the power adapter to it and it last for days even in standby.

Can this run windows without getting too hot?

still overpriced. specially now Razer has the stealth.... pretty much will own the 12.5 space for people who actually do work. The core M is a disaster.

Yet, the macbook still can do 4K editing faster than a PC:

What an utter "disaster".

I still laugh when I look at that and see 480p FaceTime Camera 4 lines down. This cracks me up, Apple has a sense of humor.

Return it.

30 days is past the 14 day return window. I'd have to pay a hefty restocking fee. I'd almost rather sell it on craigslist (crazy I know, heh). Do you have a new macbook? Just curious!

I was going to ask folks about the 2015 Air versus the new Macbook. I'm seriously tempted to get one...but the Air is doing me great. From a specification standpoint the Air is more than enough for me...so, yeah, not sure! :) The one positive to the Macbook would be the retina screen.

Why does MR call this "Retina MacBook" when the product name is CLEARLY "MacBook" (as shown in the article screenshots?

You are giving Phil Schiller nightmares!

because "MacBook" is used to refer to the entire family. Adding retina makes the description more specific.

I won't be buying a MacBook like this until 2025. Right now, I need some functionality, its too first gen and limited for what I want out of a notebook computer today. The 13 MBP is the right balance and even it has some significant trade offs. Still had to invest in a thunderbolt Ethernet adapter. I also don't like the tactile feedback, feel like it would trigger pain in your fingers. Even the MacBook Air 9 years later is still too limited for my needs.

Your needs sound really esoteric and your speculation about tactile feedback finger pain is baseless. The new Macbook will be as powerful as current MBAs within a few years. 99% of users will love them, 1% of self-important nerds will complain.

Still overpriced for what you get. But so was the first MacBook Air, which is now a nice little machine.
Yes but premium pricing is nothing new, just proof it's genuine Apple. Refurbished hardware is Apple's strong suit, while I've never bought anything they offer, some of my counterparts at work have. It comes out of the box and works as good as my new product does.

Im planning Windows 7 or 10. which one do you think will run better on Retina macbook?

Only Windows 10 will run in Boot Camp. Either will work just fine on Parallels or VMWare Fusion. I'm running Windows 10 on Parallels Desktop.

Still an overpriced toy, unless all you do is browse the web and read emails. Even then, iPads are a cheaper overpriced toy. ;)

That's what everyone said during the first gen of the Air.

The price will come down in subsequent generations, and it'll replace the air.

If indeed thats all your using your laptop for, then save $600+ and get an iPad in the first place.

Some people want a real keyboard. For those who don't, the iPad is fine.
