Had a defective lock button on my iPhone X. None of the Apple Stores in my area had any in stock, so I ended up waiting 2 days for a "refurbished" unit to be shipped to the store. It has an "N" serial number. Yes, I would have preferred to exchange it for another retail unit, but that was not an option (I could have returned it for a refund and then tried to find another iPhone X, but felt the "N" vs "M" issue wasn't worth it).

If you damage the phone and they repair it you can’t return it

If you have Applecare Plus, then that applies differently. But if it has a minor scratch on the display, Apple likely wouldn't make a big deal about that. But if you're talking about severe damage to the iPhone without any type of AppleCare, then it might be more of an issue to return the phone.

I am just curious as I do not know the answer. With the X being so new are there any refurbished units yet or is Apple just sending out new ones with a N designation. I would think it would take a while for there to be enough returned X’s to go through whatever process Apple has to go through to get a phone to be refurbished. Just curious.

I doubt Apple has many refurbished units yet. I think I've only read one swear someone claims they received a iPhone X as a refurbished unit. When a customer returns a defective device to a store, Apple stores have specific units set aside strictly for replacements for defective iPhones.

Even if it is a refurbished unit, it receives a new casing, battery, and display.

I returned a retail device as it had issues. The N model I got as a replacement doesn’t have the issues, so for me, the replacement is better whether it be refurbished or not.

Does your N model work fine with no issues?

My N was built 2 weeks before the M I had on launch day and works great. There’s no way it was not brand new from the factory. I wouldn’t worry at all this early in the game.

Got my iPhone X replaced today for software issues, that Apple said they couldn’t fix with a restore (screen recording not working at all).

The replacement came in a white box and has the N model. Everything looks new, guy at the Apple Store Said it was new and that they have “new” units set aside just for replacements, but who knows, he didn’t even know how to do a screen recording -.-

Am I being unreasonable to ask for a brand new M phone when I’ve only have the device for ten days?
Its the same thing, with new battery and new outer parts with same warranty. Its just apples way of tracking.
