I still disagree with the designed "specifically" for floor thing especially with front ports and such designed for quick accessibility.
But whatever.

If that is true, I will contend it is a POOR design.

If it was well and clearly designed for the floor, the ports and such would be near the top for better accessibility. Surely someone could design a better computer for the floor in particular.

Which leads me to this - would it still operate on it's side - ala the 80's setup?

Whether it would operate on it's side or not really isn't relevant to the discussion of whether it's designed specifically for the floor.

My MacPro users guide makes no mention that the computer must sit on the floor but from the diagrams it's pretty clear what orientation it's meant to have for designed operation.

It was about 3800 Canadian including monitor after taxes. Less than what I paid for my G3 and Monitor in 2000 when it was new.

Hmm... I don't mind putting my Mac Pro down on the floor, but to be frank with anyone who prefers the desks, I have to agree with you. I have a 5-month-old Beagle pup, and as you might've guessed it, yes, it's Summer, the season for shedding. I cannot believe how much fur falls out every day!

So, I'd rather put it on the desk, like I have. :D

I don't mind having it on the floor either. I just find use and cleanliness easier on the desk.

Ok look -

Steve Jobs himself keeps his on the floor - convinced now?

Nope
:)
He simply chose to put it on the floor to keep the desk cleaner for presentation.
The argument is that the Mac Pro is MEANT to be on the floor and NOT meant to be on a desk through specific design. Which is hogwash!
If you are right, and it is designed for the floor in particular, it's a poor design for usability.
:D

and in the apple store itself
I am actually joking now

Again, clean presentation for display does not equal Designed for use on the floor. The argument is spurious.
:)

I have a toaster that is better designed to sit under my desk than the Mac Pro. It has easily accessible top slots and a handy foot pedal for activation.
:)

I think we have a gap in understanding as to the term "Design" as we're using it here. The tower has a smaller footprint allowing it to sit out of the way on the floor, but that's where the design clearly ends.

I think the optical drive wouldn't work. Also, would the spinning disks/heads on the Hard Drives have a problem? All of the other components would be fine, I'd think.

All this discussion tempts me to put my Mac Pro on the desk instead of the floor, where it is now.

umm, who cares! It can go wherever the owner wants it to go, thats the beauty of it. It doesn't really matter, some people have it on the floor and some have it on the desk but its their preference.

floating mac pro

i plan on putting mine in a hammock, and have it swing from above my workstation.

seriously - 38 responses. wow. the man likes his tower on his desk - you put yours where you want, k?

The ACD puts off a lot of heat when set on maximum. but I find that too bright. I've set it to half and it's perfect.

Wow, in reading this I set my ACD to max and I had to put my shades on to view it  The setting I use id 4.7 of the 16 dots, so about 30% I guess - and that's in daylight, I even find that a little bright in the night time.

Regarding the floor vs desktop debate, the problem I have found keeping the MP on the desk is that it can make it noisier as the wood of the desk acts as a soundboard - that being said I do have an incredibly cheap and poor quality Ikea desk so perhaps others don't experience that?

Despite all my cleaning and dusting, fur and dust bunnies happen. Practically none of it makes it to the top of my desk. I've noticed about a 40% drop in crud in my G3 tower by having it on the desk.
Yes I took note of it.

That is the exact reason that in my company I will not let people put the machines on the floor.

I personally keep my Mac strapped to my back. I suspend my ACD from the ceiling, have my keyboard taped to the wall, and use a pizza box and textbooks for a desk.

I'm hrdcre yo!

I always keep all my towers on my desk and not on the floor. Things are cleaner up on the desk and as well less chance of anyone kicking it or tripping on a cable and possibly damaging a port where the cable goes in.

I'm very impressed. Everything is purring nicely.
I got the 2.66Ghz with a refurb ACD 23".

I purchased 4 more Gig of RAM from Mac Ram Direct via ebay.ca.
No problems. They were fast and efficient. The RAM arrived the same day as the computer.

This thing really blazes. Especially compared to my G3 350Mhz.
:)

I really reccomend a refurb. It's just as good as new and I saved a lot of money. It's a really great experience.

I've named the computer Asgard.

Thanks for all the suggestions on this forum!

Congrats. But one Q. Did your refurb have any scratches on it?

I care. I also care how people hang their toilet paper. When I find a roll hung with the sheet dangling underneath, I always remove it and rehang it in the proper over-the-roll manner. This should be law.

apparently you don't have kids or cats. they can unroll a roll in 10 seconds flat.

i prefer to have a little paper dangling from the toilet paper, makes it easier to grab the paper if say someone knocks the door and you need to wipe yourself before opening the door.
