Ugh....I was given some misinformation elsewhere, and was under the impression that refurbed MacBooks also got a new outer casing. Now I've been reading other forums and have been told that only the iPads and iPhones get the new outer shell. I've been reading stories about people who received their MacBooks with gouged sides, multiple scratches on the cover, etc.

I'm really hoping that my MacBook Pro arrives looking new, as I tend to be very meticulous with my electronics. It got shipped today and arrives on the 18th. I'm hoping the previous owner is like me when it comes to caring for his laptop.

I know to some people that sounds petty, but at almost $1600 I have expectations for the exterior cosmetics. Keeping my fingers crossed.....:)

If it doesn't meet you're expectations you can just send it back anyways. I wouldn't be impressed either with anything less than a mint condition product which is what I've always gotten.

We got a 13" mbpr refurb a few weeks ago. In perfect condition. Saved $250. Was for my wife she doesn't even know ha ha.

Hello,

I'm new to your forum and quickly wanted to thank everyone for their helpfulness on this board. I've read numerous topics and the vast majority of people are professional, educated on the product, and kind.

I'm heavily entrenched in Apple products, owning an iPhone, ipad, AirPort Extreme, and iTouch. I've always been impressed with Apple's build quality and CSRs. But this is my first jump into their laptops.

I just ordered a MacBook Pro with Retina, 15", 8GB, 256SSD. At the refurbished store it was $1549. It seems like a steal. But as soon as I saw the "Thank You" screen I started getting nervous. This is a July 2012 model, which means it is a first version product coupled with being refurbished.

Refurbished items make me nervous enough, but 1st generation seems like I may be doubling-down on potential problems. In your opinion was it worth the $600 savings, or am I asking for trouble?

Thank you for your time.

From what I've heard of Apple refurbs, you're going to be fine. People often say that refurbished models are actually better than brand new because they've been tested more and are guaranteed to work.

Out of interest, do refurbished products still have cosmetic wear from the previous user? Like scratches around the charging port and the like? Or do Apple change anything which has cosmetic wear?

I got a refurb 27" iMac. I can bet a million $ that there is no difference apart from the box which will have a refurb printed on keyboard box. They are being opened, checked, cleaned and sent to new owner.

Now you should answer these q:

1) if you buy new Mbps will you open it and tinker with it ? - maybe but very unlikely you will be able to return it - and they check all the refurbs so there's no worries here

2) if there is any cosmetic damage I doubt it will be in the middle of the screen flashing into your eyes, maybe at the back or somewhere else but tbh who cares about I don't, will you? Enough to pay few hundred extra? My refurb iMac was spotless btw

And I think most of the refurbs must come from returns anyway. I will never buy brand new apple, I will always go for refurbis.
