Refurbished MacBook Pro

Not to be pedantic, but it's actually almost always NOT worth it. Your case is an outlier. Most folks don't use their Apple Care service at all, it's just free money for Apple.

I wonder how true that is these days. The current crop of Macs seems more problematic than ever. It might be fair to say "Apple care is becoming increasingly worth it."

Yep, Apple isn't losing money on Apple Care.

Like car insurance, it's priced such that the company will make a profit.

That is also true but Apple has and Apple will increase the price of Apple Care to compensate.

Personally, I never get Apple Care anymore for my Apple purchases.

I've gotten lucky with AppleCare - I never buy extended warranties on anything, but when I spent $3k on a MBP in 2008 I couldn't fathom spending another grand for a logic board repair in year two, but yet the computer would've been far too valuable to scrap, so I bought it. Sure enough, AC ended up replacing it with a 2010 so it was a wise investment. But then I played with fire and did NOT get it for the 2010, and I never had a single problem with it. Now I bought my 2015 and have been debating AC+, but my credit card doubles the coverage so now I'm not sure if I want to get AC+ for just one additional year, plus I'm really turned off by the fact I have to get AC+ and can't just get normal AC - I have zero use for AC+.

If someone buys the refurbished MBP15 at $1700 then the AppleCare is almost 25% of cost. Yikes.
