I bought a refurbished iMac. Not only was it 'as new' it also had upgrades over and above what I was charged for.

I call that the "refurbished lottery".

When people buy Macs with extras and they are returned and turned into refurbished products, Apple doesn't sell them separately. So some lucky guy will get that Mac with the extras and not pay for them.

Also, when new products are released the unsold old ones become "refurbished". They are actually brand new. For example, refurbished iPad 3's were sold at excellent prices for quite a long time when iPad 4 was released.

Wonder if they stick him for the restocking fee?

Computers shouldn't be impulse buys, that's what candy bars are for.

They should charge him, but they don't.

If the box wasn't opened by the customer (and computer not turned on of course) it is still new in box.

I would think Apple can't legally sell the product as new. Imagine this scenario: Guy buys a Mac, puts it into the boot of his car, five miles later he has a bad accident. There's no visible damage on the Mac box, but he returns it to the store without saying anything.

Never a Problem

My refurbs have always been in excellent shape. I would never hesitate to purchase one. Go for it, use the savings to get Apple Care.

21.5 mid 2012 iMac base configured refurb arrived at my house with a dead LCD panel. confirmed via Apple support and Genius Bar.

instead of re order i just bought a new late 2013 21.5 iMac when i returned the refurb to the Apple Store. had it 10 days and decided i needed (wanted) more RAM and Fusion....back to the Apple Store to return that then BTO via Apple online.

i got nothing for my trouble with the refurb, but didnt ask either.

i think i am a happy now.

+1

I buy the Applecare and upgrade RAM where needed.

I've had 6 refurbs...all work as advertised.

Will always buy a refurb.

You can add me to the list of people who have bought refurb units with zero problems. The only difference is the plain brown box instead of the glossy white one. I would (and will) do it again.

That glossy white box is the most expensive box most people will ever buy.

:D
