The best deal is the refurb 2.5 with 512mb of VRAM, if you can get one of those grab it. Upgrade the ram yourself to 4g and your set.

I wish I could man. Anyone knows where I can still get a 2.5? a website a store?
like bestbuy hasn't lowered their prices on the old MBP's which is pretty weird

If their out of refurbs maybe wait a few days and see if they restock, they probably will at some point

Macmall and Smalldog have a good selection at reduced prices. I have found craigslist to be the underbelly of the internet.

Hmmm. since I don't like the mirror MBP I was thinking to get a refurbished one too. Not that I really need it now, but my Powerbook G4 is 5 years old so sooner or later I'll need to change, and I'm scared that Apple will insist with the horrible glassy screen for a while.
Is 1820 eur for a refurbished one a good deal ?
It has 200 GB HD and 512 memory ram. Are all the previous MPB with led display? And if not how can I find it out ? The Apple website doesn't mention it.

Is there any reason not to get the 2.4Ghz? Just wondering as I'm considering that model because the added $200 from 2.4 to 2.5 seems too high for me. Any real substantial difference?

Thats my question too. I mean I can go right ahead this moment and get the refurbished one for $1499 CAD and get it over with.
but people keep telling me to get the 2.5?

It has 512VRAM instead of 256 and a slightly faster chip set. The extra video memory may be useful when driving a 30" LCD and running apps that make use of the RAM. Otherwise the 2.4 is is good, but if you can get the 2.5 then GET IT as its resale value will be higher too.

also make sure you get the screen you like, matte or glossy. you may only find alot of 2.5's that are matte.

I live in Italy. Here prices are always higher, despite the euro/dollar exchange rate. Don't know. Maybe they will go down in the next days???

Well the biggest difference is the 2.5 has double the L2 Cache (6mb instead of 3mb). The improvements that gives is fairly hard to quantify as it depends on the type of operation you are doing, but its generally greater then the .1 ghz upgrade. I didn't pay the extra 200 though, cause I really don't have the cash moneys for a high usage <10% performance upgrade when a majority of the time I'll be using it i won't nearly be utilizing the entire processor (aka the "felt gain" wasn't worth it to me in my currently limited budget).

I bought the 2.4Ghz model. I currently have an iMac G5 2.0Ghz with only 1GB RAM and it is perfectly fast enough for everything I throw at it. I normally just do basic things with some Photoshop work. I'm glad I saved the $200 now. ;)

I did exactly that just a few days ago - scored a new 2.4 Ghz Penryn MBP 2GB 200GB for $1200 (after the $200 MSN live cashback deal), pretty insane I think considering it's just as fast as the new one in non-graphics benchmarks. The $800 savings makes it a no-brainer. I also got an Applecare warranty for $145 off of Ebay after the same cashback deal. So for $1345 shipped I'm sitting pretty damn well.

Apple dropped the ball big time on the new MBP release, plain and simple. The case and build quality are absolutely stunning, but seriously, no processor improvement whatsoever over the last generation? Maybe that's Intel's fault more than Apple for now advancing processor design fast enough, but they should have at LEAST gone with a 2.6ghz proc for the basic MBP configuration in the new system, and I think an LCD resolution improvement is long overdue as well when you compare the MBP to other notebooks in it's class. And for all of the fanfare over the new unibody system, the new MBP being bigger and heavier than the old is a step backwards frankly.

Now I'm just waiting for those Intel SSD's to come down a bit.. with one of those my old junker will eat the new MBP's for breakfast.

Which vendor did you buy from using the live search cash back deal? I'm hunting through them now and not seeing any that have the 2.4ghz priced near $1400....

I just ordered from apple it self. and I have a peace of mind

Nice guys, I think we all made good decisions going the refurb route. The wait for it is killing me though!

Just bought New(previous gen) MBP

After waiting for the new laptops and not being happy with the lack of options i opted for a 2.5 MBP 15" from apple clearance. I paid a crazy low $1439.00 with student ADC discount!!! Im my opinion its a great deal i saved a good chunk of cash and upgraded the ram to 4gb from frys. Heres the link for 4gb for 32.99 after rebate such a steal!!!

http://shop3.frys.com/product/5503990?site=sr:SEARCH:MAIN_RSLT_PG+ and upgraded

Until apple steps up and offers a matte options and other pro accessories im sticking with this. A way better deal in my opinion. The new ones are barely faster and not to me worth the money.
