are there importation fees that aren't being taken into account?

No idea!

I though stuff like these would have been tried and tested like it is with Guitars and A LOT of other stuff. Buying stuff from the US and abroad can save you a fair amount of money but apparently seems taboo when it comes to Macs.

Has anyone apart from 'Pundle' done anything similar?

Like I said above: you need to pay about 16% all inclusive import taxes (includes the GST) on anything worth more than AUD$1000.

All products sold in Australia are listed with GST included. The opposite is really rare.

That's still amazingly cheap. So, just for simplicity sake, it's just 16% GST after you adjust the currency. Saving a HEAP of cash money.

Look if I go through with buy this US Mac stuff, I'll make a video or something to show you how it all goes down if it dies or whatever.

The mac mini from the States comes with a 110V power supply, which means that if you have 220V you have to buy a different one, or get a transformer.
Yes, I just discovered this today after checking out the Mac Mini in the online store. All the laptop models should be fine though. Not sure about the iMac either.
or you can mod the firmware of the superdrive to make it region free...;)
Have you successfully done this? I did a lot of reading a while ago about it and this seemed impossible with the MacBook's superdrive hardware.

Yes, I forgot to mention there would be import taxes. I didn't really have to deal with them fortunately as I got it shipped with a shipment my work was making and they handled it all, but normally you would have to pay them. Still, even with the taxes you stand to save a lot of money.

How is this for a comparison;

New imac 21.5" £949 in the UK. At todays exchange rate that is $1566.01 US.

Looking at the US store, the same imac is $1199, or £696.26 which is less than the white macbook here here in the UK.

Who says we don't get stiffed lol.

As a footnote, have ordered mine from the US store to be delivered to a friends house in US. He is coming over here first week in November so i'll make a nice saving.

Did the same thing with my digital SLR and HD camcorder. Have saved a fortune. :):)

Is there a way to buy US stuff and us it in Australia/UK?

If you have a friend in the U.S., yes :)

1) The power adapter is different. This is easy to fix: just buy the Apple World Travel Kit for and you'll have the adapter for your country and several others.

2) The keyboard is different. Apple Retail Stores in the U.S. have an obscure policy that nobody knows about. If a customer wishes to purchase a computer and have a keyboard from their country of choice installed, Apple will do this at no additional charge. You or your friend buys the computer, and is able to use it while they wait to receive the proper keyboard. It may take them about a month to order and receive the proper keyboard. Once it comes in, the Apple Store must call you and schedule a time for you to come in and get the keyboard exchanged. It is a very in-depth repair, so it will take a couple hours on any of the current model computers. They MUST perform the repair same-day. They cannot require you to wait several days while they exchange the keyboard. They cannot charge you for this keyboard replacement. If you walk into an Apple Store and ask about this, nobody will know what you're talking about. Ask to speak to the "Lead Genius." If (s)he doesn't know about it, suggest that (s)he do some searching on "K-Base." This policy exists beyond a doubt.

3) The SuperDrive will ask you what region you want to use the first time you play a DVD. The drive itself is not any different than if you had purchased the computer for your country.

I hope this was helpful.

macjunk(ie), can you point me somewhere that details how to do it?

X-JRO, that site looks interesting. I may have to check them out when I next go to buy a Mac.

fluffyx, Macs in Australia use the US keyboard.

I believe the US store displays prices excluding VAT/Sales Tax, if true this would be a better comparison:

949/115*100=825.217391 GBP = 1 348.15765 USD subtract 1199 USD and you're left with 149.15765 USD of shipping, UK distribution, UK ads, UK stores, UK services and possibly some EU screw-overs or 91 pounds and 30 pence, which is all right.

Worth it?

Wow, looks like they came up with a solution only a month or so after I was looking for one. It doesn't sound too hard! I shall give it a go.
