I have noticed it gets less crash-y if I have less pages open. Lots of pages, especially rss or news sites that feel the need to reload in the background, will crash it faster. I try to keep it under 3 pages constantly open and it gets less unstable. And if its a big, graphical website, i close all the other pages and let safari devote itself solely to the one site. it's not perfect but it helps.

Frequent Safari Crashes iPhone

Crashes 2-3 times a day? Lucky you. Mine crashes 2-3 times every time I try to use it. With the election and all, I check in on the :mad:RealClearPolitics web site frequently and link to various news blogs from there several times a day when on breaks. There are times I cannot fully read an article due to the number of times Safari crashes. I keep hoping Apple will fix it, but not so far. Hope that they read this. My next phone purchase is in doubt...APPLE, CAN YOU HEAR THIS??????

Regular crashes

I have consistently experienced frequent crashes of Safari on the iPhone. It seems to have gotten worse with the 2.1 iPhone OS update.

I regularly read the Wall Street Journal - especially the op-ed page where I get frequent crashes. It is not isolated to the Journal, but I also regularly get them with Yahoo pages, CNN, and other sites.

It is really annoying - especially since the load time on pages via the less-than-blazing ATT network.

My crashes were virtually non-existent to begin with but have increased with each update.

I use the NY Times app a lot and I'd say that pretty much all the time I can't get through one article before it crashes.

I think I average 4-5 crashes a day.

By crash I mean safari ends and the home screen appears.

I'd really like this to get better, I basically expect it now.

Don't mean to be a party pooper but I really have to add that my browser crashes every time I use it. To put that into perspective, I'm constantly online on my non-hacked iphone with a full battery and a solid wifi connection and I can honestly say that it crashes at the very least, 7 to 10 times a day. It gets so bad that I go into the settings and clear the history, cookies, cache and reset the network settings. Not to mention the fact that I don't use more than 3 tabs and I visit java friendly sites. WTF? It also seems that after the latest firmware update, it has gotten worse.

I can't use safari for more than 5 minutes without getting a crash. It's put me off using the iphone for browsing altogether.

I hardly ever have Safari crash nor does my wife. We use the Iphone primarily for internet usage and apps. The only time I've had it crash is when there is a pic heavy page I'm trying to open or another site with a lot of stuff going on.

It's been mentioned several times in this forum and elsewhere the primary reason why Safari will crash. The amount of cache it can store is limited by the very limited amount of RAM at its disposal. Large webpages will crash it more often since the RAM can't store what it needs to. This is also the reason why you will notice that if you open a new window, the old one will often need to reload when you go back to it. An RSS feeder will automatically reload if open in one page, and this reloading can cause Safari to crash if Safari is simultaneously loading another page. This is not a justification, just a reasoning; if anything this lack of adequate RAM is a flaw in my opinion. Although, this is only what I've read online, so take it with a grain of salt, but it makes sense.

Mine crashes all the time going to my usual websites tuaw, macrumors, engadget and gizmodo. It has gotten far worse in 2.1 to where the browser is almost unusable. I can always tell when it is about to crash as everything slows to a crawl when trying to scroll webpages. What I would like to see Apple do is dedicate a little of the flash as a ramdisk for the browser. I know it is slower than the ram, but it may go a long way to stabalize the browser. In my opinion, this being Apple software, it should be a lot more stable than it is. Maybe the new cosmetic changes in 2.2 to safari are not the only thing they have done to it. I am hoping that it has been rewritten.

safari crashes way too much for me to the point that i don't even use it anymore...

Mine crashes quite often too, and I get frequent messages about network errors.

Some days it'll crash six or seven times on one browsing session, not site specific (it happens on Macrumors for example). That's new to 2.1.

This is almost entirely while on Edge/GPRS, and I rarely have more than one tab open and no music. I've never jailbroken. I suspect there is something odd about the way 2.1 interacts with O2's phone network/proxy server, and this is the cause of a significant chunk of it.

It *has* been a bit better the last couple of weeks. About a month ago it made the phone unusable over anything but wifi.

I've gotten to the point that I won't post a long comment on any site, if I'm on my iPhone, because I know it's just going to crash before I hit submit anyway.

I experience a lot of Safari crashes. Not usually, though, when viewing iPhone/mobile versions of websites, but very frequently when viewing pictures or complicated pages. It is very annoying, as most of the time it crashes just before the page completely downloads. I've had this since first owning the iPhone (over a year now), and as far as I can tell, no software update has really made the problem any better...

Anybody know what actually causes this problem?

It's almost as if we need copy & paste just to save our comments in Notes incase our browser crashes.

Well that was a stupid thing to say. Safari has been almost unusable for the past two days. It's crashed out on me at least 25 times, and thrown up literally 80 - 90 302 network errors (I found a post on usenet by an Apple engineer admitting this was a known issue with Webkit).

Arghhh!

I'm a heavy user and I can't remember Safari crashing ever on either of my iPhones, the original or the 3G.

I do regularly clear the history and cache though.

The next update must come with some serious fixes for safari or there's going to be legions of angry iPhone users. And btw, mine just crashed right before I posted this. It's getting downright unbearable.

if the webpage is too large it always crashes and lags when scrolling or typing i hate it

I deleted some apps on my iPhone and the crash goes away. The phone is overall more stable. I guess the instability is in the firmware itself: even with 2.1 the system is getting more and more unstable if you install more and more apps.

Hope 2.2 fix this

Ive had 3 crashes since upgrading to 2.1 a week after it came out (i have a tally).

Maybe its because I go on pretty simple sites
