do you have an external case? if you do put the ssd in it call up disk utility on the internal drive. partiton the ssd. then restart /boot with your finger on the key r.

internet recovery will allow you to install mountain lion on the external ssd. once the install is done boot with the external ssd to see if it works. then power down and put the ssd in place of the 1tb hdd and put the 1tb hdd in the external case. BTW here is a usb3 case for sale on amazon

I just received my Base 2012 Mini yesterday and after verifying that it works, I replaced the HDD with an SSD.

Bootet, received a boot error. So after some trying around with command+r I finally ended up to boot with the option key, formatted the disk and performed a clean installation (from internet download) of mountain lion. Worked pretty well...

Seems to be the easiest way in my mind. I do not have an external case or whatever to do such things.

How long did it take? Do you need to reinstall the iLife?

Took me about 30 Minutes to download (depends on your internet connection) plus maybe 15-20 installation to the SSD.

Honestly I do not know what iLife is, just googled it and yes I think i have to reinstall the apps, at least iPhoto wasn't there, but I just re-downloaded it from the app store also.

I am not sure if this is the perfect option for everyone, but for me it was great, since I did not have to take over any data or so.
