It is your right to doubt all you want. I actually handled the phone and it worked just fine. So in my opinion it is not the most ideal situation but a 4S will run ok on the latest OS.

So why take a device like the 4S running iOS 5.1 or 6 and cripple it with "ok" performance. iOS 8 sucks and you know it. And if it didn't suck then Apple wouldn't be focusing iOS 9 on stability and optimization.

What's sad here is an iPhone 4S running iOS 5 or 6, and iPhone 5 on 6 feels so much better than an iPhone 6 or 6 huge running iOS 8. YES, its that noticeable.

They suggest that the device can turn on, which is all you need :) From there, just force the device into DFU mode. DFU mode should be able to bypass any software-related boot hangups.
Both evasi0n and Pangu install an app on the device and require you to push a button on the screen at some point during the jailbreak.

Are you suggesting that by putting the phone in DFU mode and then running these jailbreak apps, that access to the springboard and the ability to press this button will occur?

The person who owns this 4S is quite happy. They love iOS 8.

They do not hate like you!:p

Yup, surely a completely non functional 4S that doesn't even boot with iOS 6 is so much better and more useful than a working one with iOS 8.

Yes, hate would be the correct word. Hate iOS 8 for being slow, buggy, unresponsive, laggy, glitchy. Most importantly I hate it for running like crap on the iphone 6, and leaving me with an outdated phone for another year or two.

How do you really feel about it?

Apple can not make everyone happy. But there are millions and millions who are!:apple:

Maybe a switch to android?

People love using false dichotomies in arguments! Noting and being disappointed that apple's decisions does not mean we'd rather be android users. I think it's fair to express an opinion. We can certainly agree to disagree.

Also, allowing people to restore an older version of iOS on their older hardware is not a "you can't please everyone" situation. It does not take anything away from happy ios8 users, but opens an avenue for people who would rather have responsiveness than new features.

Ps does anyone know what happens if you try to restore an iphone 4 right now? Will apple still allow ios7? Or will it in fact say "your device can't restore because it doesn't support the latest OS"?

Yup, I'm fairly positive it will. DFU (and by extension, the jailbreak process) is hardware based, so no software related hangups should get in the way.

Negative.
The jb will not even start if the device is in dfu restore mode.
Phone has to be fully functional and loaded in the home screen without a passcode on.

You are completely clueless on the topic and shouldn't be Trying to give advise before you even learn the basics.

It installs the last version of it, iOS 7.1.2.

A bricked phone is worse than iOS 8 so there isn't anything to lose.

My iPhone 4S (currently on 6.1.3) has gotten corrupt for whatever reason and now hangs on boot. The iPhone has never been jailbroken or altered by third party methods. Is there any way for me to restore functionality apart from upgrading to the latest iOS 8?

Jailbreak? SHSH extraction and injection? Any thing?

More information:
OS X 10.5.8 (PPC)
iTunes 10.6.3

Well done for keeping the PPC flame alive so long! However, you'll probably need to upgrade your iPhone to iOS8.

You could then take out an iTunes in the Cloud subscription (which iTunes 10.6.3 supports) and download playlists you create on iTunes. Personally, I'd just put the dough towards an Intel machine that's Yosemite capable...

LOL! Yes. But there are also other ways that STILL keep the PowerPC flame alive. :D

Google Play has a System Preference and an app that are both PowerPC. Both, in conjunction, will push your playlists and entire iTunes library to Google Play. You can play ANYTHING in your library on your device. The benefit is that none of it's stored on your device.

Did I mention that what I just talked about is PowerPC? ;)

No iCloud subscription needed.

P.S. I have an iPhone 5 and because of jailbreaking have zero need to use iTunes anyway. Bridge and Bolt put everything where they need to be on the phone. And I use iFile to move things around on the phone.

Netatalk allows me to connect to my phone just like I would connect to another Mac or PC. Kind of nice having your entire iPhone filesystem shown on your desktop.

And oh yeah! I don't own a single Intel Mac. I interact with my phone on a 17" PowerBook G4 and a PowerMac G4 Quicksilver. :D

Excuse me? I've jailbroken several iOS devices and I'm very knowledgable of the process. And yes, jailbreaks are hardware based (and software based), unless they're not like they used to be.

If I ever encountered a device that got stuck in the booting process, my first instinct would be to put the device into DFU mode, because it ALWAYS works, regardless of the software state of the device.

You are completely clueless on my knowledge of iOS devices and jailbreaks and shouldn't be trying to tell me what I do and don't know when I know what I'm talking about.

The current JB we're discussing and all Jailbreaks on ios 8 thus far are software based. Its all userland code execution and nothing is hardware based.
The last device that had a hardware JB exploit was the iphone 4 with the limera1n bootrom flaw exploited by Geohot.
Judging by what you post I can tell that your JB knowledge is not up to par but that is ok as long as you don't mislead and give false advice like you did above.
I'm just trying to correct and educate you on the matter if you're willing to listen and learn.
Putting the device in DFU mode and running the JB will accomplish nothing like you suggested above.
You're very welcome.
