OK, I've tried everything, I'll replace the card and sign me back. (with a original rom :))
Thanks a lot for the trouble!!

I could use another tester with x1900 or 2600 and 4870 or 4890.

my new flashing tool is coming along nicely :)

some of the features of new tool:

- Nvidia support
- Error message on unsuccessful flash
- Safer flashing
- True Snow Leopard support
- Built in QE patch downloader

and much more...

I have a 7300 GT and an HD4890, does that count? ;) Heh.

Looking good though, Cindori.

Hey All,
I just got a Sapphire ATI 4870 1GB given to me today. I was reading through this thread and a few others, and I'm wondering if its possible to flash it so that both DVI ports work, and it uses PCIe x16. Right now I think the card is only capable of having one DVI port work at a time, and it's running below x16, the card is also about a year old.

The SKU# is 11133-04-20R

Any help would be greatly appreciated, I am also running a Mac Pro 3,1 with 10.6.2 installed. Thanks again.

It can be flashed, and as you're running Snow Leopard you'll have both DVI ports available. Dump your ROM via GPU-Z.

to run at 16x in the 2008 mac pro, you simply need to use the right expansion slots.

Cindori,

Someone recommended I post to this thread. In short, I bought a flashed Sapphire 4870 512 on ebay. Was told it supported dual monitors, SL. Im running a 1,1 with 10.6.2 and two VP2030b's (20.1"). The computer boots fine but I cannot get the second monitor to get a signal, it just stays black. Their max resolution is 1600x1200 at 60hz, so this shouldn't be a dual/single link dvi issue. Both run fine when switched to 7300gt. Would a flash with your program do the trick? The guy I bought it from said he had it running fine on a 1,1 with two 20" apple displays. Any other recommendations? Many thanks!

UPDATE: I attempted to reflash the card using ATI Flashing, but still no luck. Rebooted fine, but only one screen goes....

hm, so Now I am support for sellers leeching on community?

anyway, it sounds like you are using VGA in some end. you are using a dvi--dvi cable yes? no vga-dvi adapters?

Ive had one monitor working on each port (during my initial troubleshoot I made sure it wasnt a bad port) but still couldnt get extended desktop. Strangely, one time it booted with the left screen as the extended desktop (it showed just the dock, as the taskbar, HDDs, and icons would show on the right screen) and it still didnt get a signal to the second monitor, just black. When it did this, I opened the display preferences, gathered windows, and hit the detect displays button...still nothing...I even tinkered with the resolutions for each and no luck. Most times it boots cleanly and shows everything in one screen as though its the only monitor attached. And again, I shut down, plugged the same cables directly into my 7300gt, rebooted and it worked perfectly.

I'm looking to replace my Apple 8800GT with a flashed 4870 as they're getting pretty cheap; however the exact models people have had success with are becoming a bit scarce. I'm currently looking at either:

XFX HD-487A-ZWFC
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150436&cm_re=4870-_-14-150-436-_-Product

Sapphire 100279-1GL
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102849&cm_re=4870-_-14-102-849-_-Product

Should either of these work? Is there a reason to choose one over the other, or should I look for something different completely (I'm in the US so I'd like a US store and newegg has been good to be in the past)

This is on a Mac Pro 1,1, two single link DVI monitors, running snow leopard.

Thanks in advance

I bought the Apple Card (4870) But there should be no excuse for anyone using this tool on their 3000+ desktop not to donate at least 10 bucks if this tool helped them use a non Apple Ati card in their machine.

Vapor-X HD 4870?

Hi there!

Thanks to this great forum and excellent contributors (Cindori, Netkas, The Rominator, Pipolo to name just a few) I have been able to successfully:

- create an EFI ROM for and flash a SAPPHIRE VAPOR-X HD 4870 2GB GDDR5 PCI-E http://www.sapphiretech.com/presentation/product/?psn=000101&pid=217

Hi Bruno (or anyone else who has used the above card),

Could you comment on 2 things:

1) Fit of the Vapor-X HD 4870 in slot 1 of the Mac Pro. I have heard issues concerning some of the Sapphire cards due to the extremely limited clearance below the card slot on the Mac Pro.

2) Functionality of the HDMI port. Assuming no sound, but does it work otherwise? HDCP support maybe?

I'm looking at the Vapor-X HD 4870 1GB which looks to be identical to the 2GB version from a dimensions point of view.

Thanks,

Mark

Thanks all for the response. I just noticed that I only have one power cable for the ATi 4870. Does anyone know where to buy the power cable?

1) I haven't used the Vapor-X, but it's not as if there isn't plenty of room for a double-width card. That's what slot 1 is, after all. And looking at Sapphire Tech's website, the Vapor-X card does not look any bigger than my HIS 4890.

2) I can connect via a DVI-HDMI adapter, but I doubt that the HDMI port would work, as Apple doesn't ship one on any of their machines sans the :apple: TV

Here you go.

I'm thinking about flashing one of the 4870's in my MP to speed up my Pro Apps (Motion and Color). Anybody in this thread using flashed cards with these programs? Any issues?

Thanks again guys I got the wire on saturday. The card is excellent so much faster than my 8800GT in Cinema 4D and Vue 8 xStream. One minor problem does anyone know if there is a way to fix the mouse from skipping around when running dual monitors. Other than that though the Card has been great. Thanks Again

Thanks

Thank you very much! Successfully installed rom into 4890 vapor-x on macpro1,1. Natit did not work for me, instead I used remote desktop to connect and run AFT =)

Update: Bootcamp side goes wrong - noise, artifacts and so on...

Update: Used rom#5 from rom table - bootcamp side run perfect!

The type of Mac Pro doesn't matter. You still need a different ROM, but which MP you have doesn't come into play here. :)

Cin, I've got a Sapphire VAPOR-X 4870 I'd like to try; could you work your magic on my ROM, please?

SKU 11133-16-20R, PN 288-1E114-010SA. 1024MB Vapor-X Radeon HD 4870.
