don't assume that dry cleaning is a mgic solution - there's plenty of stains that they fail to get out.

The real question is WHY do you have bloodstains on your shirt janey?

This is what I was wondering myself. ;) :D

Yeesh! Just a nosebleed. Won't come out. Will try the pen and the peroxide again, dry cleaners as the last resort. The shirt isn't worth that much :p

Darn, I thought it was something far more sinister. *sigh* ;) :D :)

You could get into a knife fight and fill in the blue spots.

I suppose that janey could do that- but it just sounds a bit too dangerous. :) Although, it may very well take care of the stain..... ;) :D

Well I don't know how well it works on stains that are old like this one (nor do I think you would want to do this after all the things you've put on this shirt), but I can tell you the absolute best way to remove at least small blood stains from things.

Your own saliva. It can't be anyone else's.

There's something about the matching enzymes or some such that makes this work. This is something I was taught in my years as a worker in a frame shop. There are plenty of things there that can cut you, and it's inevitable that you will get blood on a piece of matting. With a bit of time and spit, there were few (if any) stains that wouldn't come out. Then all you had to do was let the mat dry and it was good as new!

Like I said, I don't know how well it would work this late in the game, and I doubt you would want to suck on your shirt now (though you could always just apply saliva to it in another fashion), but that's some good advice for your next "nosebleed."

Did you try cold water and soap? Whenever I have "monthly" accidents that's what I use. I'll dab soap (even hand soap) on the spot and then scrub it in. It will generally get most of the blood out, and then I'll wash it in cold water with a load of whites (love Tide Cold Water detergent!!). If the blood set for longer (i.e., more than 12 hours I sometimes put a pre-treater on it, like Shout.

Well, I looked it up in my "2,001 Amazing Cleaning Secrets" book and the only things I found that weren't mentioned were :
-Mix 1/2 tablespoon of salt with 1/2 cup of water. Pour on stain, let dry. Rinse thoroughly.
-OxiClean (directions on bottle)
-Another tip says to soak in water and dish detergent, if that doesn't work add a splah of ammonia :confused: (I don't know if I would try this)

Also, never use warm water on a bloodstain, it will set it in. Always use cold. And club soda is great for the initial spilling of blood, if you happen to have some handy at the time.

:)

I've seen the "No hot water" mentioned several times so far. Include no hot air. Dryers do a wonderful job of setting stains.

maybe you could wet the stain and try the peroxide route again?
they certainly are...

Haven't tried OxiClean for blood, but it does work much better as an oxidizer than peroxide but is a lot less harsh than bleah and minimizes the visual impact of many stains.

Your saline solution seems much too weak given my experience. I tend to lightly wet the bloodstain and work in some salt until the stain starts to loosen a bit around the edges, and then follow up with detergent once it's mosty gone.

(One of my kids is prone to nosebleeds OK, nothing sinister).

*Runs screaming at the thought of that*

You men have it so easy....

Sometimes you misjudge the capacity of your protection vs. rate of blood flow. Other times you misjudge the start date. It happens....

It's a light blue cotton shirt.
With enough bleach it would be like having a brand new white cotton shirt. Then you wash it with something you just bought that's a nice deep blue and hasn't been washed, and voilá, you have your nice blue shirt again.

White toothpaste not gel rubbed in with old toothbrush gets out most bloodstains.
Baking Soda + vinegar works OK
If the shirt was dyed using a natural based dye then forget it. its already combined with the pigments in blood and you will never get it out...

FYI
Blood never disappears from ALS detection, many many years later it still shows up, longest I have ever seen was 5,600 year old cooking pots showing blood and managed to recover DNA from them.
Semen lasts a long time too.

The Bleach/peroxide most likely destroyed any usable DNA on the stains , yes they will show up as blood but prove it is human nevermind whose...
I decontaminate my lab with 10% bleach solution for five minutes, works even better than the UV bath.
Bleach really does destroy everything...

Interesting solution Leareth- I did not know that you could use white toothpaste (non gel) to remove blood stains. :)

I guess that the saying "you learn something new every day" has been proven true yet again. :)

When I was in the military a British Warrant Officer gave me the tip to use the white tooth paste to get blood out of my uniform shirts and it works like a charm , so the kudos go to him not me I an just passing it on...
AIM toothpaste is the brand most recommended, its uber cheap and really abrasive, perfect for cleaning bloodstains, cleans toilets too. as well as getting the stains out from tile grout and polishes metal... toothpaste who needs cleaner...
