Apple is rumored to be working on updated 11 and 12.9-inch iPad Pro models with iPhone-style triple-lens cameras, and alleged renderings of the new iPads have been shared by iGeeksblog and OnLeaks.

The new iPad Pro models are said to feature the same dimensions as the 2018 iPad Pro models, and based on the renders, the design will also be close to identical with the exception of a triple-lens camera.

There were some rumors indicating Apple would release new iPad Pro models in 2019, but that didn't happen, and current information from reliable Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo suggests Apple plans to release an iPad Pro update during the first half of 2020.

We've already seen dummy models said to be of the new iPad Pro models, which featured a triple-lens camera, but those may not be quite accurate when it comes to the camera design.

The new iPad Pro models could potentially feature a time-of-flight (ToF) camera system that is also rumored to be coming to 2020 iPhones. A time-of-flight camera system uses a laser to determine the distance between objects to create a 3D image of the surrounding area.

This kind of technology could allow for more accurate depth perception, improved augmented reality capabilities, and perhaps photos with more advanced depth information.

The new iPad Pro models are rumored to be coming in the first half of 2020 and the time-of-flight camera is expected to be a 2020 iPhone feature, so it's not entirely clear if Apple plans to put the time-of-flight functionality in the iPad as the company may first want to bring the feature to the iPhone.

If there is no time-of-flight camera capability, the iPad Pro models could still get the same triple-lens camera system that's in the current iPhone 11 Pro and Pro Max models, featuring telephoto, wide-angle, and ultra wide-angle lenses.

We've also heard that in late 2019, Apple could be planning to release a 12.9-inch iPad Pro with a mini-LED display, so it's not clear if Apple will release two iPad Pro updates in 2019 or if the early 2020 release timeline includes just the 11-inch iPad Pro model.

Update: According to OnLeaks, the iPad Pro models were rendered with both aluminum and glass backings because he has no information on the casing material, so he wanted to depict both possibilities. The original iGeeksblog article suggested that one iPad Pro model would have a glass backing and one would have an aluminum backing, which is incorrect. Our article has been updated to reflect this new information.

Oh Sweet Baby Yoda, if there’s one thing I always forget even exists on my iPads, it’s the camera. Now there will be more lenses for me to forget and possibly crack. Oh well, I am not the world. I’m sure plenty of people will love this and I do believe it was inevitable. I’m actually for it, if it makes the iPad even more versatile and functional for other users.

To all those wishing Apple would make an iPad worse than they can.
Remember Tim Cook says on stage they strive to make the best products they can.

Why would anyone wish Apple to make a product worse than they can?
That does not make sense.

I have only ever used the iPads camera whenever I am on a plane while watching a movie and I see something that needs to be captured right away. “There’s something in the wing, some thing!”

The rear camera package should not be a selling point, Apple. The ease of use and pro-sumer ability to crush through basic tasks while on the go. Is what the focus should be.

Great. now more people will take pics with a foot wide iPad at concerts blocking my view.
The people that are going to hold up their iPad in a concert are going to do so whether they have a triple-lens array or the potato quality iPad 2/3 camera.

I actually welcome camera improvements on the iPad as a secondary feature set for scanning documents and the occasional moment when I'm at home and don't have my phone on me. However, given my choice I'd rather Apple optimize for the best camera possible without having much of a notch. I'm sure that iPad is still large enough where we don't need to worry about wobble, but now I need to always make sure I have a padded surface under the device before I lay it down.

The current 12 inch is bad enough to use flat on a table without that limpet stuck on the side.

Also wireless charging? Mine was slow enough when I initially had the pack-in 12 watt brick, think how bad it would be with a Qi pad.

All that being said, I'll end up getting one day-one to replace my Gen 2, it's just too useful to my workflow.

cmon there won't be wireless charging on these iPads...

This is why I laugh when people on here say they are waiting for the next iPad Pro refresh.
I 'am simply so I don't buy one when the next one will be out in maybe 2-3 months.

Very doubtful Apple is going to debut fancy new camera tech on the iPad—where the camera is a secondary feature—months before it comes to the iPhone.

Really cannot fathom why it needs that camera system. So there are a handful of amateur film makers that want to put it on a tripod and use the huge view finder. So what?

Seeing that just tells me Apple doesn't have enough upgrades for iPad Pro to continue justifying the already absurd price, so they add what they have.

My New Year's resolution is to not buy any tech in 2020 unless something has stopped working. So no iPhones, iPads, Macs, Headphones, smart home accessories etc. Just to test my will power and resolve. Let's see.

You have a couple more days to get your fix before the new year starts. =)

Neat resolution by the way! I hope you’re able to do it.
