guys, I've just seen iTunes have Despicable Me in 4K to rent.

If I rent it, would it be a stream or a download? I'm dreading a download would eat a lot of my data.

Dude, streaming it will eat the same amount of your data as would downloading it :) It's temporarily downloading it to your ATV 4K as it caches the film.
I reckon that a 90 min film in 4K HDR HEVC will be coming in at 12-15GB.

Ouch! 12-15gb!!!! I think I'll need to call my provider to see what sort of data allowance I have.

In the UK, a lot of home broadband providers are offering unlimited data. Mine is capped at 750GB a month with a 250mbps speed but to be honest, I've never gone over 100GB a month - maybe it will increase a little with my 4K ATV but we only tend you watch one o two films a week anyway :)
I have 4K films bought from Vimeo in the older h264 and they are 9GB in size per 60 minutes.
I guess that you can find out the size of the films by checking your broadband invoice and seeing a daily breakdown of data used!
Even 4 films (4K DV/HDR) watched a week which to me would be excessive is only approx 250ish GB a month. Not too bad :)
But do check your broadband allowance contract :)

I found rentals were hd only
Though Sony tv displays 2160p so maybe does some upscaling.
Rentals should be 4K DV/HDR as well as purchases dude!

I'm on the other side of the fence. I want a download. I have a NAS and I don't want to use data every time my kids watch and rewatch and rewatch a film. Give us an OPTION at least.

Streaming only may well be the demand from Hollywood studios at that price point.
UHD blurays at the moment sell at double the price. OK, that also accommodates for a 2-disc set and region-free discs.

I never thought about it that way! That's an even bigger OUCH! I was going to buy Wonder Woman on 4K but didn't realise that I'd get hit for streaming every time.

Is there any reason why they won't allow downloads? I mean, you've bought their box, used their software, paid for the film, it's yours, so where is the issue?

Yes, but whether you stream or download, the film is still yours for half the price, right? As I said above, I just don't understand! Or am I totally missing something, somewhere?

At the end of the day, you haven't really bought the 4K - you've bought the HD 1080p film which you can download and Apple have kind of given you a 4K version to exclusively stream to your ATV 4K box. That's how I look at it (as I buy everything from my MacBook not ATV).

4K iTunes only play on the ATV 4K and of course that's a streaming box only. That's what 4K iTunes is being marketed for THE APPLE TV 4K and IT'S A STREAMING DEVICE. It doesn't download a film to keep on it. Surely, it's not a problem streaming a 4K film once or twice a week with any data allowance? There can't be many people in the world that watch films every night can there???

I still think iTunes is a bargain when you go into a supermarket like I just have and seen a crappy low definition DVD being sold for the same price £9.99 as a HD or 4K iTunes film. And also, I wonder if 4K UHD BluRay will still be around in a few years time? Even on Amazon UK, there's hardly any discs for sale - less than 30 and not even one is of interest to me.

Actually, I am not even sure, it is yours. It's intellectual property (like eg software). You can buy only the right for private use. But you will never own it.
I am by no means a lawyer, but that's how I understand this IP business.
https://www.techdirt.com/articles/2...own-dvds-you-bought-thanks-to-copyright.shtml

BTW from the music business I know, that selling discs and downloads are two totally different things from contractual and sales territory viewpoint.

Right, the more and more I think about all this, the more and more I think in a way using the like of iTunes, Amazon etc is a rip-off (I understand we choose to do it, but most people don't realise they're being ripped off). Especially when you look in to what priitv8 said about ownership. And I do think he is spot on. All we need to do is look back at that iTunes music debacle where someone wanted to leave all their iTunes music to someone else in their will and Apple said 'NO!"

iTunes **can** be a bargain if you keep your eyes peeled for the bargains (CheapCharts is amazing). But a lot of the times you can get physical discs for the same price, if not actually cheaper, than iTunes and you DO actually OWN the blooming thing (Dawn of Justice went on sale on iTunes today BUT is still cheaper on Amazon to buy a blu ray disc)!!! I know we've discussed the value of 4K films... but then we can digress into quality, ownership etc.

Bodybuilderpaul, I'm one of those people who watches a film almost every night :-D And then I suffer like hell the next morning when I gotta get my lazy ar$e outta bed :-(

PS I'm sure you guys are already on to this one, but if not, you can access iTunes via Quidco and you get 7% off purchases. I know it's not much, but over time, if you buy a lot you save a fair bit.

I don’t want to disagree, though iTunes movie purchases in U.K. clearly advise rentals are shown in HD only.
T.b.h Apple4k HD movie rentals are excellent quality though no where near 4k quality if for example I switch to Sky UHD the difference is noticeable.

I certainly do not believe that it's a rip off. You can download and keep a 1080p version of the film, you can remove DRM and give a copy to a friend. PLUS, it's multi platform, you can watch it all your iPhone X, your MacBook and up to 5 ATVs which is handy for me, as I'm elsewhere in the UK on a weekend and I simply sign in to my friends ATV 4K and all of my films appear.
Remember a disc is only good for as long as your disc player works. In a few years time our 4K UHD blurry players may be obsolete.
It's very clear that iTunes want to be the leader of film distribution and they are working their butts off to do so. They have nearly 200 4K DV/HDR films in the UK store as from today so their library is growing daily. 66 films just 7 weeks ago!
Surely the ultimate rip off is a DVD in the UK/Europe. Dude, it's speeded up 4%. That's a HUGE amount. Voices not just music are truly inaccurate! What a rubbish system that is. Just try playing your favourite music at 4% pitch and you'll be horrified!
To me though, a film is not like a book. I love the physical size of a book - especially my surfing books but I gotta admit, I detest the sight of DVD/BluRay cases in a house and the awful UI of most players.
I got 2 bargains on iTunes today including one in 4K DV for £2.99.
Anyway, each to their own. As long as you enjoy the film with your friends and good food is doesn't matter which platform you prefer :)

Absolutely agree, the main point of all this is the enjoyment of the film... and a Dolby Atmos soundtrack wouldn't half make it even more enjoyable ;-) And then, when you've finished watching it, pressing the eject button on the UHD player, taking the disc out, making sure not to get grubby finger-prints on it, putting it gently away in the sleeve and putting it back where it belongs on the bookcase ;-)

I think I'm getting old :-D

You should definitely be able to rent a 4K iTunes movie dude. The iTunes store clearly states this: "Buy or rent a great selection of 4K HDR films".
I rented one the other night and it was 4K HDR!

Dolby Atmos is coming so I guess, it really will be the icing on the cake :)
Seriously, respect to Apple for the speed in which they've implemented everything. Auto switching, the HUGE amounts of 4K films being added daily. Imagine how many films will be in 4K DV this time next year! Maybe half of the catalogue?
Also as an example, SONY promised DOLBY VISION on their OLED TVs nearly what, 6 - 8 months ago and... waiting

Hope you guys are using the discounts from Quidco I mentioned above :)
[doublepost=1511101061][/doublepost]A quick question about a problem - I rented Wonder Woman for my little girl who has been going on about it. I bought it on my Mac and downloaded it.

Problem is I can see the film on my Video app under Rentals. But it doesn't show on my iPhone.

I'm logged in to the same itunes account and I can see all my purchases. It's just the rentals I can't see on the iPhone.

What version of iOS are you using dude? Anything older than iOS10 will not function properly on the rentals multi platform. If up to date, sign out of iTunes on your iPhone and sign back in.

My iPhone is on ios 10.2. My purchases show. It's just the rentals that don't.

My iPad which is on 10.3.3 shows my rentals.

I did sign out of itunes and back in again but that didn't work.

[doublepost=1511112383][/doublepost]Problem solved - You MUST have 10.3 as a minimum!!!
https://www.engadget.com/2017/03/21/itunes-movie-rentals-finally-work-across-multiple-devices/

My fellow film buff and surfer, What would I do without you. I can't begin to tell you how much I Googled for this!!! My noggin' hurts now!

Thanks for finding this out.

Also, whilst Googling, I found out I can get 15% off iTunes films. Now that's a slight consolation for the head-ache of Googling!!!
