did yours have scratches, scuffs too? And there's a black spot that doesn't come off wth paper towel

The only thing else aside from the dirt was a very tiny blemish on the unibody next to the bottom edge of the track pad. It was so small I decided returning it wasn't worth the hassle.

I will admit it. I have OCPD and have dealt with "perfectionism" in the past. However, I have learned to live with imperfections in life because, NOTHING IS PERFECT! If you want proof, go and look at yourself in the mirror. Are your teeth perfectly straight and white? Do you have perfect complexion? Do you have any gray hairs? God didn't intend for things to be without flaws. It amazes me how people think their beloved Apple products have to be perfect. None of them are. Get over it and focus on the more important things in life!

I think it's possible to do both. One can return a scratched or damaged brand new expensive item, and focus on the more important things in life.

No, I'm sure no MBP is perfect. But if one does not want to accept a scratched one (right on the lid mind you - not a tiny one out of sight), then I don't think that necessarily means they are letting the rest of their life slip. A can accompany B, but the presence of A does not mean that B has to exist.

Of course if someone gets a brand new MBP with a scratch on the lid and it doesn't bother them, then more power to them on just keeping it. To each their own.

I hope you let us know how you make out, shoegal.

Apple sent me an email that they will call me today. I'm not sure what I'll do if they say they don;t want to give another replacement. Maybe just live with it?

Oh and do you guys know about age of your mac in battery app? My new one says six weeks?

If Apple don't give you another replacement, you can always return it for a full refund & then place a new order for the same item again. :D

I purchased Apple care too. I'll probably lose that 250 euro's or do thu usually refund that too?

You did the right thing when you decided to contact Apple. I think you're being too nice, although you've been treated very badly. We all know that quality control has gone down the drain lately, but doesn't Apple check at all what they're shipping these days? If anything you should be angry for having to deal with three(!) DOA's and now the fourth is scratched right out of the box. You have had to deal with way more than any customer should. No one should be getting defective laptops one after another from any company, and this is from Apple which is supposedly all about quality and design. Ridiculous. Settle for nothing less than a product you're happy with.

Well, Apple said they would contact me today but I haven't heard from them..Actually they would have called me yesterday but at the end of the day I got an email from the representative saying they would be in touch today 'to discuss the issue'.

I don't know but I feel a bit weird about this. I sent them an email and pictures immediately after I received the macbook but tomorrow it will be 6 days...and they can just be like: hey, you've had it for a week now..

I hate the fact that we don't have ANY Apple stores in my country. I can go to one in the UK next week but they might be like: uhm sorry, you got it two weeks ago and customer service needs to deal with this. I loved the genius bar service i've experienced in the apple stores when i was the US so i really think we should have one here!!!

Appears i'm out of luck. Another email from the representative. That I should test the machine and they'll call me tomorrow(again??)

So I'm thinking they're gonna tell me: hey you've tested it and this one isn't defective, right? Those scratches should be minor then.

I don't know what to do. Should I be firm and tell them, yeah it works but still i didnt get a good machine because it was scratched and dirty or try something elsE?

I think I would escalate it at this time vs. waiting on them. What is there to test? You don't care whether the machine works or not because it is *scratched*, right on the lid in front. You are looking to exchange it for a new one that is not defective. If you test it, and it works perfectly, does the scratch somehow go away? Noooo.

So, #1 option: Can you just return the computer? If this latest one is less than 14 days old, and presuming your country does not have different rules than Apple US do, then I think you should be able to return it. (I know that when I once returned a defective Mac, the replacement came with a new receipt that had a new "starting date" so my 14-days started over with the replacement - seems yours should have too?)

I would take option #1 at this point if it is possible. Just start fresh. Buy in person at a UK Apple store if the keyboard is right for you (then you can inspect it right on the spot).

#2 option (only if you cannot return it outright): Stand firm (politely and nicely) with Apple that the machine is scratched and you want one that isn't. That is reasonable. (ESPECIALLY with all you have had to go through with three that were mechanically DOA; but even if not -- many people return scratched computers if they were damaged right out of the box.) Let them know that you have no reason to test the machine, as you know the scratch will not go away by doing that, and that you want to focus your time and energy on the computer you will be keeping (i.e. one that does not come pre-scratched right on the front lid).

That's my take anyway. I am patient and polite, but I do get a bit less accommodating when it feels like people are just "jacking me around" and not respecting my time (or logic, in this case!). Don't let your 14 days evaporate while they fiddle around.

Thanks for your reply MIss Terru. I guess i'll have to be firm tomorrow. Don't know how I can get a refund. Apple intl sent the MacBook to me but without an actual receipt. Just a shipping or order confirmation. I could try to take it to the store in uk with this confirmation maybe. I know for a fact resellers in my country won't help me.

Remember that when I got my 2nd replacement an thought wow this harddrivr sounds like it's dying, I told the apple rep this and she was like no I'm sure you're just overanxious now. So then I got it checked out and the apple tech said that it was indeed doa.

I think she's going to try to downplay this again...so I'll have to stand my ground. The exec customer reps can be great at first but I feel like if you're to much trouble theyre very good at evading and also be a bit overpowering. Last time she kept talking and talking and I hung up feeling what just happened there? Maybe I should send her an email before she finally calls just to make clear where I stand?

Oops sorry for misspelling your name Miss Terri! Damn iPhone autocorrect ;)

I have had times where I have felt that way too, and it's easy to either let the conversation end without feeling like you got what you wanted across; or to get defensive and talk too much (at least for me).

What I have found helpful is just to write down my "facts" and keep them nearby, then when it is my turn to speak, just state them calmly, politely, yet firmly, and then not say anything else. Let them talk on as much as they want, and if it comes back to you without it being resolved, just state your facts again and that's all (if I don't remind myself of that I get all too nice and wanting to smooth things over and be friendly and etc.).

This has worked pretty well for me. I hope you can get this resolved.

MT, wanted to let you know that I sent an email to the rep this morning, so that she knows how i feel about this before we talk over the phone. I write that even though I appreciate her efforts very much, I feel disappointed by my experience. Three defective units and then a scratched up/chipped/stained/dirty one. I said that after all my troubles I think I have a right to a model in new, good even perfect condition(by the way, all customers do). And that although this one might be working fine, if I settle for it , I feel I'd only do that because I've had three defective units and am like: wow, at least this one WORKS. And for a notebook this expensive., you don't want to do that. I said that I would want to explore this issue and maybe I could step into an Apple store next week in the UK and see if they can help me out?

I wonder what her reaction will be. I really have no idea at this point.

Even if she gives me a refund it will probably take a while because i bought the macbook in the US so she'll have to go through that Apple store to get the money back. At least that's what she said before. So that means I'd be without a notebook next week on my business trip and I really need one. sigh... :(

update: she apologized about everything and said the best i could do was probably go to an Apple store in the UK. So that's my plan now. I'll let you know how that goes.
