Don't worry I have not received my box either. I tried to call Apple and they wont talk to me without apple care protection. I got my conformation November 13th. I better not get left out on this one or I will be pissed.

Funny, after 10 days without box I called Apple (France) and they organized a pickup by UPS the next day without any envelope...

I got the replacement envelope 10 days after (~25 days after request) that so I think they are a bit overrun ;)

Now it's waiting for replacement since 6th December in Netherlands...

Where is my box?

I haven't even received my box to send it out yet :(

Others have received their replacement (original or 6th) and I haven't even received a box yet. I sent my request in November 29. That is almost a month ago.

The whole process was suppose to be 5 - 6 weeks.

Where is my box?!

2 words: Unprecedented response.

Give it time, its not costing you anything and they will get around to it eventually. A good exercise in patience.

The only reason people get like this is because it's completely random who's getting their replacements, there's people here who got it all sorted in a short space of time, but those of us who've waited the longest have had nothing sorted yet. That causes frustration which leads to posts like the one you quoted, it's perfectly natural, it would only be an exercise in patience if it was an entirely fair system where by everyone was in the same boat, but it's not, it's completely random who's getting there's sorted and who're still waiting.

Got an email from Apple yesterday, indicating that the replacement will be here Thursday. I had submitted my replacement request the day the program was announced. My shipping box was on my doorstep the next morning, a Monday. I shipped it that Thursday and heard nothing until yesterday.

And yes, the serial number indicates that it is a 6th gen Nano. That would be nice, though frankly I'd have happily taken an original shipped quickly.

Stupid question...

If they replace 1st gen by 6th gen nanos, why it would take so long??

Is it possible they use the serial of 6th gen nano for 1st gen? I mean we will receive original 1st gen refurbished?

I know I'm not having a positive attitude but well I find strange that you request a replacement for a thing and you get something back completely different without any mail from apple like We are sorry we ran out of 1st gen and you will get refurbished 6th gen nano...

Hmm ok,

I was wrong on another forum a user got a 6th gen nano silver...

So yep I think this is it... But why it takes so long...

Change in plans due to supply issues, probably.

I suspect that Apple went in figuring that they could fill initial returns from the stock on hand for normal service replacements, quickly refurb the incoming units, and then turn those around for subsequent returns.

Most likely, one or more of a couple of things happened:
  • Fewer incoming returns were usable than expected (i.e., people sent back Nanos that had been dead in a drawer for years)
  • Difficulties with repair part quality or yields (Apple ordered a bunch of new faceplates and backs, but they went the way of the white iPhone)
  • Turnaround of refurbished units was longer than anticipated (how many died in surgery?)

It may be that Apple decided to pull the plug on refurbishing to avoid the PR nightmare of missing even the 6-8 week deadline.

That would be the likely alternative (i.e., some artifact of the remaufacturing process requires a new serial number be generated). It seems odd, though, that they wouldn't then just issue more serial numbers from the original series.

Apple would probably argue that there is some clause which says they are only obligated to replace with an "equal or better" replacement.

If it's true, though, there is still a potential backlash from the early-in/early-out people who received a refurbished 1st gen. It's kind of like when you buy any Apple product and have its refresh a few weeks later only, in this case, the aliens brought the replacement from six years in the future. Also, there will inevitably be somebody with a bunch of 1st gen Nano accessories who will complain about how none of them are compatible with the 6th gen they got back. (Heck, my wife's 1st gen normally resides in an iHome alarm clock with a dock connector. So much for that if we get a 6th gen (have to use the 3rd gen Nano instead).

Fair point.

And for the record, I am starting to get impatient, as mine repair status has been "Product replacement pending" since November 17th!

how can one check

How can one see what the new serial number is? And where to cross check it online? Mine simply says shipped yesterday.

I feel its about time i joined the macrumors forums :)

here in the UK, i haven't had an email response from apple since the initial "product replacement request" one, telling me how i can check the status. I missed a delivery this morning, so i rang UPS to be told it cant be left as its an apple delivery.

with no emails from them, i don't have the new serial number... is this normal practice in the UK, and if so, what replacements are UK customers getting?

Mine was in early, showing as processing on the apple site. I'm in now rush as my wife has had two or three iPods/iPhones since so it's a bonus if we get a 6th gen replacement.

as an update, i now have an email from apple, with the serial of a 6th gen nano as the replacement! guess ill need to trade my arm band for a watch strap.

UK Replacement - 6th Gen Nano

Just checked my Repair Status which has been pending replacement since November 17th...

December 28, 2011: Replacement Product Shipped
Shipped via UPS with tracking number xxxxxxxxxx

Checked with UPS and it should be delivered today!

Better Still, I checked the serial number in the email from Apple and it is definitely a 6th generation Nano.

SWEET! :D

general question for those who already got replacements

turn around time from sending in envelope/box with nano was? just curious as to when I may expect to see one show up. Its been about two weeks since ups walked away with my old nano.

From Apple's email acknowledging receipt of my Nano, it was 6 weeks to the day before my new one arrived (I think it was a couple of days after I shipped). I live in the U.S., a couple of my European friends waited a bit longer, and I read a couple of posts on Apple's forum reporting as little as 4, and as long as 8 weeks.

thanks

ya my service tracking page shows they havent even got it back yet. I'm in canada so i can't see how it would take that long.

Same, delivery of the replacement unit was 6 weeks to the day after Apple confirmed they had received my old one.

I got my shipment notification today. For me it went

December 30 - Product Received
December 30 - Issue identified
January 12 - Product shipped

I sent in a 1st gen 1 or 2gb (can't remember) and it was busted up (broken screen, I had opened it and it was bent and what not, still worked but couldn't see anything). When I looked it up, it is a 6th gen. Not sure how to figure out the size until it arrives next week. Only weird thing is that when I do a warranty search, it shows up as not having warranty. It shows Technical Phone Support being expired and repairs and service being expired. I don't mind it coming in as being out of warranty since the 1st gen was way out of warranty, but it seems inconsistant to what I am seeing from others. Maybe the online thing doesn't update until I get it. Either way, I am pleased that I will be getting a new watch! :)
