My iPhone 4 was replaced a few months ago with a 'brown box' refurb. Still looks and feels exactly like any other iPhone 4. In other words, 'refurb' is no worse than 'new'! In fact, coming from my quite beat-up original iPhone 4, I couldn't have been happier at the time.

Not surprising. With Apple profits missing market estimates for 3rd quarter expect the company to start saving on customer support. If it's any consolation you might be one of the first to experience their new policy ;)

Oh, please. First off, Apple only missed those expectations set by the analyst. Secondly, they grew their profit margin by billions of dollars! People are failing to see this, and it's common that after the slowdown of production of the iPhone 4, that sales would go down. I didn't see you going out and buying a brand-new iPhone for just a month before you knew that the 4S was coming. Don't act like they're going down! It's ridiculous, that people would think that just because sales were little lower than analysts expected Apple is doing poorly all of a sudden.

Send from Siri.

I have no problems with refurbs because Apple's are generally high quality, but I think within the return policy period it should be a new in box phone. It just makes sense other wise just return the phone and purchase it again.
