It doesn't matter. He already bought the drive, so it's better for it to be slow for data, than to replace the system drive.

And FW800 is not that bad for that.

It's not bad for that purpose but you are not getting what you paid for performance wise. A little thought ahead of time could keep you from buying into a bottleneck anywhere on the system.
