I am very glad for people who has just bought the 2020 iPad Pro and sad for people like me who was waiting for this model to update their existing 1st gen iPad Pro.

I know people will say that it is plenty fast, it doesn't slow down..etc which is completely true. But if i am paying 1.5k for an iPad and plan to keep it for 4 years as i did like the one that i have right now, I'd rather not pay for a 2 year old CPU. Even tho, I really want to have the USB-C port.

Some more patience.. :)
I've bought the iPad Pro 2020 and I wouldn't mind if there is an update this year, this would remove nothing to my model which is amazing

The 2020 will last more than 4 year, the first-gen iPad Pro is still viable so this one will too last for very long

It’s not a two year old SoC. At best, it could have had an A13X. The difference between that and the A12X/Z isn’t as significant as you think.

I dont know when the 2018 iPad Pro has been presented, but i thought that it was vaguely 2 years old, that's why i said two years old. Even if it isn't, we are still close to that.

To be honest, I have no idea how more powerful the A13X would have been as I did not realy look at the performance comparison between the A12 and A13 but i suppose it would be proportional to those.

Even the increment can be less than the one there was between the 1st gen and the 2nd gen iPad Pro, i would have still liked to see if Apple pushed harder and made it happen, regardless if it is the fastest or very fast today. If i was someone who changed my ipad every couple of year, i could care less but if i want to keep it for 2-3 generations, then any performance boost, is always welcome.

For sketching, even my first gen iPad Pro is pretty good, even tho it is starting to struggle when I use TOO many layers (I love drawing with a lot of layers) but the struggle is minor, almost insignificant. But as I had stated in my previous message, I hope that some more "serious" 3d modelling apps come to iPad Pro, may be an iPad version of Rhino..etc and may be a rendering software as i would love to go laptopless and use only my iPad. I know that it is today a wishful thinking, but if it happens, any performance boost would be useful both in cpu or gpu side.

I consider buying an 2018 version as well sometimes, but here the prices for them is just 100 euros less for the 64 gb version. At this point, the deal just doesn't worth it considering that the 2020 model has 2 gb more ram and 128 gb base storage.

Oh please do not get me wrong, you have an amazing device! Actualy much nicer than what i have right now :) My hypothese was just for the future if there were more pro and demanding apps to arrive to iPad Pro. Then again, it is all just random guesses, noone would realy know how it would be. I was just trying to explain my point of view. :) Also i think that it depends on what you use your iPad Pro for. For my sister, my iPad Pro would still be a flying machine. :)

Mini-LED and 5G will be awesome, but until then I’m very content with my 2020 12.9” iPad Pro.

It didn't make much sense. Make the next iPP release a true update, not iPP S, like this year's mild 'update'.

So, to sum up:
An iPad update which includes a LiDar, an extra camera, 2 GB more of ram, less price per Gb, Wifi 6, one extra GPU core, better LTE connectivity, and studio-quality mics is just a "minor" S update
But an iPhone 8 with just a new processor and 50$ discount (aka SE 2020) is a groundbreaking new phone which is amazing? 🤔

I guess that's because our needs are not the same. Some may find it ground breaking the extra cameras, and i can find it useless as i never use the camera of my 12.9 inch. Same for the mics, when i skype, i don't care if my voice is studio quality or not but someone else who records audio, will definitely like it.

And iPhone 8 for me was a joke as an update, actually never felt the need to update my iPhone 7 to the 8. But that's only me. I think that it brought Wireless charging if i am not wrong? For someone who was searching an iphone with wireless charging was an huge update.

I see what you're going for but honestly the phone is as much or more of an update. Its basically an iPhone 11 inside with an iPhone 11 camera for $400. Thats just as big or bigger. The iPad is a nice update but not enough for someone to move from a 2018 model. Previous model for sure.

I don't know about the phone, but the improvement from the 2018 iPP to 2020 iPP seems to fall back into the half cycle iterations we got in iphones. Made even more apparent with the consideration that ANOTHER iPP was supposedly on the way later in the same year.

So, yeah, minor if you're going from previous model to the next after 2 years.

Makes the two 2018 models I have even more of a value for the life expectancy they will have. Tried the 2020 and no discernible difference TBH. Lidar isn’t useful for my needs, and nothing taxes the iPad anyways. And by the time I go to WiFi 6, I’ll have a newer model than the 2020 anyways.
2020 will be the year of Apple doing next to nothing aside from the new iPhone 12. And any kind of software upgrades.

I'll probably wait to buy a new iPad until this comes out. Feels like the 2020 iPad is already 2 years old out of the box on paper. My current iPad probably won't get the new iPad OS this fall, but one can hope.

Maybe now I can find the funds for a new mac this year. Thinking of getting a macbook pro as a family computer and getting myself an iPad for when the wife or kid is using the mac. My 2012 non retina MBP is still pretty snappy for what I use it for, but I don't think it will get the new Mac OS this year.

Hopefully this means it will use the Qualcomm X60 modem instead of the X55

A12 to A13 was a tick to toc cycle update with refinement of power usage.
The A12Z is more of an Ick update cause it’s icky. Lazy!

Likewise the only difference will be faster ship and mini LED so i would this say this an hold me over for a few years at least.

This doesn’t bother me. I‘m not anxious for mini-LED. My 2018 iPP is still amazing to use and still feels as if it was brand new. There’s no pressing reason for me to get rid of it right now. So when mini-LED comes, it comes. 2021 is better timing since I normally keep my iPads for at least 3 years.

Same, in love with my 2018 11". The only difference is I am wishing for a 'pro max' version of this design to take the place of my MacBook Pro. Maybe 15-16". As the iPadOS continues to evolve, I'm hoping it can handle most of my mobile computing needs.

Same here - would love a 15-16” or even potentially something like a 20-24” for pure desktop use.

So, if it weren’t for coronavirus, they would have issued two updates for the iPad Pro this year: 1) to get LiDAR out prior to the iPhone 12 launch and 2) to upgrade to a new chip, mini-LED, 5G

It is just like Apple, every once in awhile, to issue a twice in a year upgrade— in 2012 with the iPad 3 and iPad 4; in 2018 with the MacBook Pro.

My guess is they would like the iPad Pro on a yearly schedule eventually and since we didn’t have an update in 2019.

Think sources were saying it would have only been 5G and 14x chip not mini LED

Prosser says ipp with only 5G and new A14x chip upgrades to be released later this year. Could easily still be the 11 pro.
Out of mini-LED, 5G, and A14X, I want mini-LED the most. 5G is a nice bonus, for longevity reasons. As for A14X, I am not really all that concerned with the SoC performance.

Prosser's rumor said 12.9 5G with A14X and no other changes, which means no mini LED display. That iPad could still come out later this year. This thread is for a mini LED version.

I won’t be happy if it’s another iPad 3/4 scenario. There’s 0 reason why they needed to do it this time.
