Nothing wrong with that approach as long as you are OK with the compromises inherent in devices that attempt to fill many roles. Some of us are not.
While I’m with you on that regarding a lot of things. I don’t want a 40 in one ratcheting screw driver. Or a tablet laptop convertible. But in this scenario the phone doesn’t suffer whatsoever and you gain a bigger inside screen. Is it better than a standalone tablet? No. But it’s far better than just a phone. I would never touch my iPad again.

When the Plus-sized iPhones came out, I stopped carrying around my 7" tablet. I've never purchased another 7-8" tablet since.

If a foldable iPhone comes out, I'd probably still keep my 11" iPad Pro, but would likely carry it around much less often. That's assuming I actually buy one. Pricing will be key. As nice as some of those non-Apple foldable phones are, some of them are priced super, super high.

No, a foldable iPhone wouldn't replace an 11" tablet, but in some cases it will be big enough. That's what happened when the Plus-sized iPhones came out. It was still nowhere near the size of a 7" tablet, but it was big enough so that carrying around a 7" tablet seemed like more hassle than it was worth.

Ive got a 16” Thinkpad fold that I use when I need something bigger than my phone. But dont want to get on the computer. I have an 11” iPad Pro that I don’t use because it’s literally never convenient. It’s completely useless in fact for any part of my daily life. A foldable phone would give me just a little bit more screen I’d be happy to have. I don’t care what it costs.

That’s what I want, rumor is a flip phone though :/
Yeah, I'm curious how it will be implemented. If it could be done well with not too much artifact at the crease, perhaps I'd prefer a wider screen with a vertical crease than a longer screen with a horizontal crease. OTOH, a longer screen with a horizontal crease might be less disruptive for a web page. Either way though, having more screen real estate would be nice.

Eagerly waiting to see the first foldable from Apple. Not sure whether it will be an iPhone or an iPad. Either way expecting Apple to price it at nothing less than $1500. Hopefully it will be released in the next two years.

Although mitigating the resulting crease that comes with current foldable screens is a requirement, the issue I have with current foldables is the feel of the screen itself. They just do not have the solidity of the slab of glass that every chiclet style phone has. I grew up with devices that had plastic screens that had the same kind of “give” and I’m not interested in going back to that.

I wait for v.2 of foldable if my mini will agree on it, and continue to serve me well.
But actually I would prefer a new mini, so ditch Cook instead 😉

Please no. It’s a fad that doesn’t solve anything, isn’t practical and the people I know that have foldable phones just have the screen have issues. Stupid.

Given none of the major phone manufacturers make a mini-sized phone anymore, pretty sure Cook isn’t the issue, the market is.

Just why? Foldable screens are going to be the new 3D TVs…
A few others have said this same 3dtv analogy, yet all the major tech firms have foldable phones in their line-ups as flagships and for Samsung they are in their 6th Gen of foldables. Look at the Honor Magic v3, that's what you call innovation. They are clearly gaining traction and here to stay, its just Apple left and they are developing theirs which will be a day 1 purchase for me once announced.

I've played a fair bit with foldables of friends and I'll likely be a day 1 buyer of such a device from Apple

(exact sizing/specs/pricing will matter, so I can't say 100% for sure yet)

I kiiiinda agree, but I dunno... while having something bigger that I can carry around easily would be handy, when I'm just doing something quick I want to do it on something phone sized, and I don't want it to be twice as thick. Are you envisaging carrying a phone in your pocket, and a folded in half iPad in your handbag as well?
The thinnest foldable phone today is the Honor Magic V3 at 9.2 mm folded while the iPhone 16 Pro Max is 8.25 mm. I would agree that the early days of Samsung Z Fold were thick at 15+ mm. Having used the OnePlus Open, I can say even the 11.7 mm was comfortable despite my small hands. The "twice as thick" is no longer true, and the Oppo Find N5 is getting even thinner than the 9.2 mm.

Fold -> bend -> damage.
Untill someone develops completely different approach, this will stay nice looking interesting toy with little durability.

I can't Wait to have a plasticky piece of junk that develops a crease almost instantly and wears out in months, rather than years!
What part is plastic? The frames are metal, the flexible screen is covered in Corning Victus glass. Do you often have opinions that aren’t based on any kind of fact whatsoever?

I love my 13 Mini—the thing just disppears into my front pocket in a way no larger phone does. Plus I like its relatively light weight.

I'm not constantly consuming content on my phone, so I don't need a large screen. For me, the main inconvenience of phones is finding a comfortable place to carry them, so the Mini serves me well.

Thus if Apple does release a foldable I hope that, in addition to an expected large foldable (Z-Fold size, prioritizing screen space), they also release a Z-Flip size, which prioritizes portability. That might be a decent replacement for my Mini—I'd need to try putting it in my pocket. [Haven't had a chance to do that with the Z-Flip, but it does look pocketable.]

Dimension and weight comparision (dimensions in mm):

Z-Fold 6, folded: 153.5 x 68.1 x 12.1, 239 g
iPhone 16 Pro: 149.6 x 71.5 x 8.25, 199 g

Z-Flip 6, folded: 85.1 x 71.9 x 14.9, 187 g
iPhone 13 Mini: 131.5 x 64.2 x 7.65, 141 g
