Is it as good or better than Toyota's solid state battery technology? They are lighter in weight, have more energy density, charge faster, and have significantly reduced fire risk.
Is that battery Toyota is bragging about in production anywhere? No…

With the way their hardware and software launches have been going these years, what could go wrong?

"Filmed on another iPhone 17 before it exploded too"

And yet Apple still won't touch the lowest hanging fruit that exists... back porting the ability to hard set the maximum charge level to 80% from the iPhone 15 models to the older models.

CATL and BYD have all the lithium battery patents. Only a handful of important ones expire each year.

Haha, "nowadays". More like, for the past 23 years.
Well yeah, sure it has always existed, but I really don’t think it used to be this extreme back in the days. I guess a lot of that comes from the site no longer being a niche place where Apple users hang out, but more of a “general tech blog with some Apple focus”, bringing along that kind of crowd. At least for the front page stuff.

Yeah....this sounds like a whole load of "smoke and mirrors..." I will believe when I see it in a product that is shipping to consumers...at the moment, sounds like this is still in the "development" phase...

I won't be surprised if this rumor gets an update in 2025 with the all too familiar "....has been delayed..." like with the development of Apple's own in-house modem project...

I keep waiting for the revolutionary graphene batteries I’ve been hearing about for forever. Of course, the challenges of mass production are always mentioned. However, it seems there has been very little headway made over the many years.

“…adopting a new composition of nickel, cobalt, manganese, and aluminum.”.

All rear earth metals.
And here we have Apple pretending to care about the environment by taking our chargers and headphones away.
Nothing to do with money and greed…mhmm…
None of these are rare-earth metals. Nickel and cobalt are problematic for environmental reasons mostly related to how they are mined and also due to toxicity. Manganese and aluminum on the other hand are super common and safe.

How interesting!

For me personally, I am really looking forward to much better battery life for iPhones at the Pro level. I do see that the Pro Max level has good battery life. It's at the Pro level that the battery life is often wanting, especially when one is using the device to often take photos and navigate.

Lithium-ion batteries have never really been safe, anyone remember the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 disasters?
Tesla's cars "randomly" catching fire? Generally anything with Lithium-ion batteries suddenly starts to smoke/burn?
Don't forget the Boeing 787 "Dreamliner" Lithium-ion batteries that was worldwide disasters waiting to happen.

Apple going back to old but gold Nickel metal hydride batteries and improving those is certainly needed.

I'd love to see this. We've come far enough (time wise) to start seeing an occasional jump in battery tech from someone...Apple would have the money and the vision to do such a thing (if this pans out).

Was hoping it might be a solid state batt, but based on the rumors doesn't sound like it.

Whoever gets the next battery technology (which is way overdue) will be one of the most valuable companies in the world. Probably Tesla but everyone is working on it.

It really hasn't:

This is very true. The gains in capacity per volume have been steady and continuous, but slow.

Expectations at the existing rate (w/o breakthroughs) is to reach about the same energy level as gasoline per volume (gasoline is very energy dense) somewhere in the mid 2030's. Hopefully there will be a breakthough along way (like this rumor) that nudges that along a bit faster.
