Apple Intelligence will miss its initial expected launch date to give Apple more time to fix bugs, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reports.

According to individuals with knowledge about Apple's plans, the company now plans to start rolling out Apple Intelligence in software updates by October, arriving several weeks after the launch of iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia. This means that Apple Intelligence will now effectively be split out of the initial launch of the new software updates. The reason for the delay is said to be concern about the stability of Apple Intelligence features and need for developers to have sufficient testing time.

Apple Intelligence will still be made available to software developers for the first time as soon as next week with the first betas of iOS 18.1 and iPadOS 18.1, which would be extremely unusual as the company does not normally release previews of follow-up software updates until the first version has been released.

Gurman notes that the new release strategy for Apple Intelligence means that the iPhone 16 lineup will likely launch without Apple Intelligence features and require a software update to obtain them at a later date. The company is now said to be aiming to have development of iOS 18.0 completed by the end of July.

Even when Apple Intelligence arrives with iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1, and macOS Sequoia 15.1, it will be missing aspects such as the overhauled version of Siri that uses on-device data to answer questions and understands what is on a user's screen. These features are expected to arrive in the first half of 2025.

AI will likely still be in beta even with 18.1, similar to the beta battery health features we saw in iOS 11.3. Siri integration won't happen until 2025. This is an iPhone 17 feature for all practical purposes.

Umm what

Let me guess, it will only work on the A17 and later processors? They need a reason for people to buy the new phone, and bigger image sensors and bezels that are .05mm thinner aren't doing the trick anymore.

You would be wise to wait for the iPhone 17. Not even Apple can put together a stable AI platform in a matter of months. Even if they buy a patented technology, it will take time to incorporate and build Siri back from the ground up.

All this time I been suspecting AI betas would never make it before iOS/iPadOS 18.0 goes public as Apple changed from summer to fall with their footnotes on its arrival.

But if we do see some AI dev seeding with advanced seeds of iOS/iPadOS 18.1 well in advance that would be sweet. Forking the version seeding seems one way to work on both at the same time, allow different extended testing, and accelerate both processes.

Didn't they do this the other year? They had two beta tracks? Caused all sorts of issues at launch for people who got a new iPhone that was on the beta because they couldn't restore from their "newer" version?

I am not the least bit surprised. Every high profile feature these days gets delayed. Better to get it right.
This is a bazillion dollar company. there's no reason they cant make it work at launch day.

people will be buying brand new hardware with the AI hype and it wont work on launch day. this isnt some gimmick feature that they sometimes push to later. This is a major feature, and once again, not available at launch.
