Not necessarily. OLED and mini LED each have their own benefits and weaknesses and there is no clear winner in all cases. So is this a tacit admission that mini LED is not good?
Mini LED was a big improvement over regular LCD because it allowed much brighter displays and better control of the brightness. They are particularly good at displaying text and similar kinds of high contrast elements. The downside can be some “blooming” under certain combinations of dark background but high brightness settings.
OLED has been in use in displays for a little more than 10 years but the early panels were problematic. Burn-in was too common with the static elements that are common on laptop and, to an extent, tablet screens. There have been techniques developed to reduce burn-in and newer components can be more resistant to it, but it remains a risk. OLEDs have generally not been able to provide the brightness offered by mini LED. Where OLED does work better than miniLED is for watching videos where the dark backgrounds look better even though the foregrounds are not as bright.
It is true that Apple has gone with mini LED when others have gone with OLED for laptop and tablet screens because they found the available OLED screens inferior for their needs. The rumors of their plans now include OLEDs with two layers of emitters that will allow brighter displays and will help reduce the risk of burn-in. This looks like a solution that gives a screen that Apple feels comfortable putting on their devices.
If this all comes to pass it will be the display tech of choice for several years until Apple’s efforts to develop a practical micro LED are ready for production and then they will be ready to change again.
