I know this is just me but I find myself just not interested in my AW anymore. Haven’t upgraded since the 7 and I find myself wanting fewer notifications instead of more. I mainly use it for sleep tracking now. Just me I know. Just bored with it. I wear it less and less. Just at night now really.
I still wear mine, but really only to unlock my Mac and door lock. I do work out with it, but that’s less often since I hurt my knee. It’s just not the tool it used to be. I guess I check the time on it… so, watch status still active?

My series 7 is still able to monitor blood oxygen, and is up to date on the OS. Is there a different sensor in the 9? I thought they had to disable all the O2 sensors via software or something

I thought the assumption would be that Apple would redesign their own O2 sensor to get around the patent claims. I didn't think they were totally out of the O2 sensor game altogether.

Having said that, my series 7 does everything I need it to. I had planned on upgrading but not until there are other health features that I'd actually benefit from.

Yeah there as well. Actually I took my iPad Pro and my Apple Watch on holiday recently and found both devices to be a net negative for me. For the sake of keeping the thread on topic, I will speak only of the watch though. Dragging the charging puck around and the attention it requires to keep it alive was irritating for the net gain of it telling me how many flights of stairs I walked up in Valletta (spoiler: lots). If I’m out hiking it’s pretty useless because the display is unusable when it’s wet. If it’s a hot day it is uncomfortable. If I’m cycling it’s impossible to use as it needs two hands.

The only utility it really has is telling the time and I’ve got a perfectly good Casio for that which doesn’t need charging up every day.

When I saw this announcement I decided to have a look in the thread and was not surprised to see interest attrition.

The number of people (in this thread alone) who appear to exhibit existential ennui because a smart-watch is "boring" is, frankly, absolutely hilarious.

Since my Apple Watch does what I need and my life does not revolve around always buying the latest gadgets, I am quite happy with "boring." And truth be told, most people are.

This is an argument for Apple platforms in general. Sadly it’s getting a little less true lately, but slow moving stability is better than Google and Microsoft’s constant tweaking.

Quite happy with my Ultra 2. I will stick with the grandfathered O2 monitoring until Apple gets the patent issue resolved.

I just had an ablation to fix some afib issues and need to monitor my HR. Glad to have a device always handy to do that. Also started using the medication reminder feature as I have to take a blood thinner twice a day for the next few weeks.

Got one of the early Ultra 2 watches. Works for me.

We must realize the forthcoming models will still be blocked because of the patent issue so mine works fine and is not on the Apple stuff replacement list this year.

Did upgrade to the M4 iPad last month and that will be the "upgrades" in 2024 until M4 hits the Mac Studio and or Mac Book pro line. Could be 2025 before that happens....

I'm perfectly fine if some new health features are MIA in this generation. While I have the Series 7, I am looking to upgrade this year as long as existing bands can still be used. The battery health is 87% and I don't even have AOD and 'wake on wrist raise' on to make it lasts a full day.

Fortunately my Ultra 2 has Blood Oxygen App functioning in my country.

What are you all expecting an Apple Watch to be able to do in 2024?
For me Ultra 2 plus Blood Sugar + Blood Pressure monitor would seal the deal but won’t rush it to own it since I already bought Ultra 2 recently (about 6 months back). Otherwise, my Apple Watch is perfect for me, bought several Titanium Straps from eBay and online sources which are really looking great. Ultra construction looks very solid with Titanium frame and Safire glass. I could attend calls, send SMS, voice memos. I think too much beyond that will probably kill its already fantastic battery life (my Galaxy Watch 6 Classic could not come near in terms of battery life)

My Series 7 has terrible battery health, and I have a condition that requires keeping tabs on my blood pressure. So I was glad to hear this was the year to expect a BP sensor. If it ends up not arriving this year, I’m gonna be really annoyed I didn’t extend my AppleCare coverage and replace the battery, because I doubt any other minor updates this year are going to interest me.

Samsung Galaxy Watch 6 Classic 47mm LTE has this feature but unfortunately, I bought this in USA and could not use it my country where it is allowed to use BP monitoring tool whereas USA regulatory hasn’t approved the Samsung Watch for BP monitoring. Hence I am stuck with it. Even though this requires regular calibration with the cuff based monitor (I bought OMRON for this purpose but could not use it with Watch 6) still a better solution. Galaxy Watch 7 Ultra expected to pack BP and Blood Glucose monitoring in my country, if that comes, then I might consider Watch 7 Ultra.

I'll probably buy an Ultra next but many medical uses are hindered by simple physical limitations. For example, I would never trust Apple Watch to independently report glucose with accuracy. I would really like a "device independent" Apple Watch but I imagine there are power consumption concerns that go along with that.

To mitigate power consumption concerns, Apple can make this NOT as a continuous monitoring tool instead only based on user intervention using an App or Key. These two are very important for health tracking perspective otherwise, Ultra 2 has everything we need from a Smart watch perspective (auto sleep monitoring could be useful, track activities automatically will be additional useful feature instead of manual intervention).

Odd I have daily workouts and the battery life of my 41mm Series 7 is not an issue at all. Not even close to running out of juice at the end of the day. Yet here I read people having issues all the time.

I REALLY hate the size-creep of both phones and watches, though.

Yep I use my S7 SS cellular for my phone......it works very well as a phone (leave my iPhone at home always) door unlock, pay for every thing, remote for my sterio system, check the weather and how far I walk each day. The battery life is good. I have some nice leather straps so it is a fashion item as well :)

Apple only had to disable the sensor on currently sold as new devices. I.E. Series 9 and Ultra 2.

I'm with you on the slow-moving stability part, but Apple has bugs they've never fixed for years because they're always prioritizing the next feature upgrades (which, I'm willing to bet, the silent majority don't care about or use). I can hardly excuse Apple on the "move fast and break things" front.

They should put 90% of the AW R&D time into finding a way to significantly increase battery life and 10% into increasing screen size.
What kind of R&D is even needed to increase screen size? Are there any technological hurdles to figure out? Seems like it’s just a matter of whatever size Apple wants to do. So what I wonder is why is there a size bump every couple years? Are they really still changing their mind about what ideal size is, or is demand for watch size actually changing and they’re just reacting?
