I'm surprised that Apple hasn't resolved the Masimo conflict using a big bundle of their cash for either a licensing deal or a buyout of the company. If anyone could afford it, Apple could.
Because they need to keep selling watches but they don’t know what else to do with them. Increasing the size is an easy way to pressure people to buy the new one because “something obvious changed”. (Unlike re-releasing the same SoC every year.)So what I wonder is why is there a size bump every couple years?
I'm with you on the slow-moving stability part, but Apple has bugs they've never fixed for years because they're always prioritizing the next feature upgrades (which, I'm willing to bet, the silent majority don't care about or use). I can hardly excuse Apple on the "move fast and break things" front.
Only years of mismanagement and R&D cost cutting could have led to Apple being so out maneuvered as to not be able to release new functionalities for 2 years running.
They did not spend that on the Watch. They spent 30 billion on R&D in 2023. Is this the new narrative people are running with? They’re not spending enough?
Where are those “most of us”??? Ain’t here. And seeing the wearables selling charts from Apple, its definitely in decline for years. The number of people (in this thread alone) who appear to exhibit existential ennui because a smart-watch is "boring" is, frankly, absolutely hilarious.
Since my Apple Watch does what I need and my life does not revolve around always buying the latest gadgets, I am quite happy with "boring." And truth be told, most people are.
I actually ‘downgraded’ from the 42 to the smaller model when they went to 45mm as I thought it was getting too large - to hear that the small watch may now be as big as the Ultra is a letdown.Because they need to keep selling watches but they don’t know what else to do with them. Increasing the size is an easy way to pressure people to buy the new one because “something obvious changed”. (Unlike re-releasing the same SoC every year.)
Also, making the watch slightly larger probably takes very little R&D effort. Almost everyone in my family has one and not once have I heard any one of them say it should be larger.
If you look at the whole Apple lineup it’s exactly the same for Mac, iPads, iPhones, studiodisplays, etc.Given how little the watch has evolved over the last 4-5 years, I wonder if the department has been under-resourced.
Wearable is only 9% of revenue (although it includes home and accessories).
Year-over-year of wearables is down 5 of the last 8 quarters.
Sure, blood pressure and sleep apnea technology just might not be ready.
But give us something more than double pinch as a reason to upgrade.
Give us week long battery life. Action button on the AW series. Titanium finish. User installed watch faces.
I believe you've labelled that incorrectly. That's the upcoming Apple Watch Max Pro.Leaked photo of the new larger screen Apple Watch, rumored to be called the Apple Watch Max:

My Freestyle Libre 3 CGMS uses a tiny little needle to measure interstitial glucose, and sits on the backside of my upper arm. Not a particularly useful location for a watch.I'll probably buy an Ultra next but many medical uses are hindered by simple physical limitations. For example, I would never trust Apple Watch to independently report glucose with accuracy. I would really like a "device independent" Apple Watch but I imagine there are power consumption concerns that go along with that.
Unfortunately, choosing a larger Apple Watch is not as easy as choosing a larger Mac. Most people don't want flat screen TV's on their wrists. The Ultra is cool, but to be fair, I much prefer the design of the regular Apple Watch, and the size too...Satisfied with my Ultra 2, it survived sand beaches unlike some previous AW versions, even sapphire ones. I don't have to charge every day, it's good for three days. I would love to charge it weekly.
Well, AW S7 is still a pretty recent model, of course there is not much of a reason to upgrade to S8 or S9.I know this is just me but I find myself just not interested in my AW anymore. Haven’t upgraded since the 7 and I find myself wanting fewer notifications instead of more. I mainly use it for sleep tracking now. Just me I know. Just bored with it. I wear it less and less. Just at night now really.
Apple would probably have to thread its way through quite a few needles to do that. Masimo makes a lot of the sensors used in hospital equipment - at a minimum, the government would probably want guarantees that Apple would never pull the plug on that part of the business.I'm surprised that Apple hasn't resolved the Masimo conflict using a big bundle of their cash for either a licensing deal or a buyout of the company. If anyone could afford it, Apple could.
Even worse. 30 billion for an Apple car and VR glasses. So it is more like „you‘re spending it wrong“ - 30 billion without any ROI.They spent 30 billion on R&D in 2023. Is this the new narrative people are running with? They’re not spending enough?

Same here. I use my ultra mainly for workout and wanted to use it to track my sleep. But I can’t be bothered to charge it before bedtime and the watch feels uncomfortable to sleep with. Looking at replacing the aw with the whoop or oura or the soon to be released Samsung g ring.I know this is just me but I find myself just not interested in my AW anymore.
