That interview is referring to the expanded CarPlay 2.0 experience Apple debuted at WWDC last year, where CarPlay takes over ALL of the infotainment and other screens in the car (odometer, speedometer, etc.). It's not about the "plug in and project your phone" CarPlay experience, which is what GM is disabling.
I said - Apple wanted to control core functions of the vehicle like HVAC, as well as the speedometer and odometer. - That is CarPlay 2. Maybe Apple wanted more from GM, like 30% tax (just kidding), and GM decided not to play.

This doesn't change much for me because I'd never buy a GM vehicle, but there is definitely a play where a carplay equivalent could be an improvement.

I also don't know why they couldn't offer options as many will be in the "carplay or death" camp.

Maybe in the future when someone makes this decision, they can explain why their system is better and showcase some of the limitations of carplay.

Well, considering that Mercedes-Benz is also not going to let CarPlay in, due to reasons specified by CEO Ola Källenius in the following interview, I doubt others would let CarPlay in too. Their reasons will apply to all the others too.

"But Mercedes doesn’t appear to be in any rush to follow its luxury vehicle peers in letting Apple dominate the in-car experience for its customers. Instead, Källenius said that the company is working closely with Apple’s main rival, Google, in designing a new navigation feature that will be built on Google Maps. The key difference there is that Mercedes’ own engineering team will be heavily involved in the process."
Smart! I use many Apple products, but letting them take control of the car, or even read core data from the car is a no go. People that drool over carplay are obviously ones that do not understand this.

Well, this is depressing. We will no longer see CarPlay in vehicles at all because of another Tim Apple overreach? I still don’t understand, however, why Android Auto is also being thrown out.
I do not know about other manufacturers, but Mercedes is working with Google to integrate Google Maps with their services. So, not totally left out like Apple, I guess. Once Apple maps become good and Apple is ready to play by the rules of the manufacturers, then Apple will also get a piece of the pie.

I got to use carplay in a Ford Edge a couple weeks ago, it's trash. Maybe they should fix that first?
I'm truly amazed at how many people say it's a good thing? That carplay randomly disconnected about a million times.
iphone 14 pro max up to date on software. I'm much happier with my everyday bluetooth link that works flawlessly.

Honestly it's because it's Ford. Whatever systems they use just work awful with CarPlay. My two buddies hate CarPlay and I never understood why until I got into their vehicles (both Fords). For the enormous screens each of them had CarPlay only took up a small segment (which is on Fords end to fix) and they too had lots of disconnects.

In every other vehicle I've been in (including mine) it's worked great.

The only acceptable option to CarPlay is Tesla, in my experience.

Still would love if Tesla gave us the option to use CarPlay

Last year I bought a '23 Chevy Bolt EV, the last EV of theirs to have CarPlay. I simply won't buy another GM without CarPlay. Its so convenient and a great experience for someone like me who's all in on Apple and has HomeKit devices like a garage door opener, thats just nicely integrated. Actually the car has WIRELESS CarPlay, which I was so used to wired, I was like "it can't be that good..." and was I wrong...completely wrong. I haven't connected my phone with a cable since after that first week with the car. There is a slight lag in switching songs, but its really not a big deal. Anyway...yeah, I'm not in love with GM/Chevy, although I really really like my car, when the time comes to get a new car, it might be ridiculous but one of the first things i look for is CarPlay.

I love my Tesla and didn't think that I'd miss CarPlay as much as I do. Everything's great but CarPlay is so much better.
What features do you enjoy? I’ve had a Tesla for nearly 5 years but have only used Apple CarPlay occasionally on rentals and some work vehicles.

I’ve found I prefer the map interactions and navigating on Tesla. Everything else kind of seems minor. I have my music on Apple Music without any issues, my calendar syncs and automatically will navigate me to the next location. I’ve never texted/called much to care. If I do, I’ll just grab my phone. I’d like to see Tesla open up app support.

All the “we’ll do our own” auto co’s seem to be using Google SW as a base.

Android Auto maybe isn’t as popular as CarPlay but Google still wins.

The amount of integration is Purely optional. CarPlay is completely free to the manufacturers to install. The only costs are meeting the hardware standards.. but apple gets nothing. It's an experience sales tool for apple... as many have said... I woundn't buy a car with out airplay for the most part... Because of Apple Music, podcasts and Audible... I do have a Tesla though, and that has podcasts and Apple Music now and Audible is coming in next update.

Wife had a 2019 Edge she recently traded in and CarPlay worked great. Car had other issues and we are done with Ford forever, but CarPlay wasn’t one of them. Sorry to hear. We did get Hondas to replace the Edge and a Nissan Titan (CRV and Ridgeline) and no issues with them.

Incorrect, Mercedes won't allow the *full* CarPlay takeover (entire UI including speedometer) but didn't say they would ditch CarPlay completely.

And why don’t let the customers choose their car operating system?

I hope that, despite this, iPhone users will keep enjoying a good integration between their phone and the car operating system.
If I apply the same logic that the EU and DOJ are using to sue Apple, then Mercedes and GM must be forced to allow CarPlay. Otherwise they are creating an anti-competitive walled garden.
