Even if it's the best thing in the world for you, imagine choosing a car because of carplay?
Well, imagine choosing a phone because of operating system… the OS for a device nowadays with all tech ecosystems is a very important factor, also for your car, as well as your TV, smart home …

It would be one thing if GM made "insanely great" cars, but, with the exception of the Corvette, GM cars are mediocre at best. So why the heck would I buy a GM car without CarPlay when I can buy almost any other kind of car that has it? My prediction is that this business decision by GM will go up there with New Coke and the Microsoft Zune as one of the worst business decisions in the history of American business. They might even teach it in business schools when they give the lecture on "Why the Customer is Always Right."

I'm sure people at GM are quoting Henry Ford when he famously said "“If I had asked people what they wanted, they would have said faster horses.” The problem with that is that in THIS case, you are not revolutionizing transportation...you're making it worse. I just can't see any scenario where GM, the maker of crappy cars, will suddenly come out with a revolutionary and better user interface than what Apple already makes.

The only acceptable option to CarPlay is Tesla, in my experience.

Still would love if Tesla gave us the option to use CarPlay
Given that Tesla just laid off their teams that develop new cars I wouldnt bet on much other new stuff otherwise out of them for a while, at least not until musk is done throwing a tantrum because his $50B payout was blocked

So, based on DOJ (and EU) logic, does this mean that GM is 'forcing lock-in' on their customers? Should they be forced to 'open their walled garden' and allow other software systems to be used as well? Are they a 'gatekeeper' by virtue of their dominant position in the automotive software segment?
Yes. Yes. And yes.

I'm genuinely shocked that the EU isn't doing more to combat the privacy implications of GM's Google-built spyware machine on wheels.

I said - Apple wanted to control core functions of the vehicle like HVAC, as well as the speedometer and odometer. - That is CarPlay 2. Maybe Apple wanted more from GM, like 30% tax (just kidding), and GM decided not to play.
Why would Apple want to control speedometer and odometer? Perhaps Apple just wants to read that data. With HVAC it would be convenient if you're using multiple cars regularly to just get in and the HVAC are set to how you like them.

If GM is prohibiting competitive navigation and entertainment systems aren’t they breaking the EU’s DMA too? Shouldn’t the EU force GM to allow CarPlay and Android Auto on vehicles sold in EU countries? Shouldn’t EU automobile owners be allowed to choose the navigation/entertainment system they desire?

As for me and mine I won’t pay GM one red cent for their system, let alone the pricey OnStar service. We bought a 2017 Chevrolet Traverse, got three free months of OnStar and canceled. It was not useful to us. If GM refuses to support CarPlay iOS users can still use their iPhones for navigation and entertainment and not pay GM for their very likely subpar system which they will charge an arm and a leg for.

I get your point but unless all your cars are identical (make, model, trim, interior/exterior colors, etc.) comfortable HVAC settings in one vehicle mean squat in another.

GM doesn’t have that big of a presence in Europe anymore, now that it has sold off Opel. So the EU may not see GM as an important gateway.

What features do you enjoy? I’ve had a Tesla for nearly 5 years but have only used Apple CarPlay occasionally on rentals and some work vehicles.

I’ve found I prefer the map interactions and navigating on Tesla. Everything else kind of seems minor. I have my music on Apple Music without any issues, my calendar syncs and automatically will navigate me to the next location. I’ve never texted/called much to care. If I do, I’ll just grab my phone. I’d like to see Tesla open up app support.

iMessage, audible, podcasts, Libby, …

Data is in the phone, so it is impossible for Tesla to implement these.

Also, I would rather not pay for another (Tesla) subscription.

GM is going to have a lot of pissed off customers. CarPlay has become so ubiquitous in newer cars that it’s almost assumed that any new car you buy will have it.

Incorrect, Mercedes won't allow the *full* CarPlay takeover (entire UI including speedometer) but didn't say they would ditch CarPlay completely.
They're not going go with extended carplay. Anything you connect with Bluetooth (or maybe corded, I do not know) is fine with them as they would not want to be foolish enough to handover the essential functions to Apple, knowing that they would hold them hostage at a later date.

Exactly, why should Apple even think of controlling speedometer and odometer? However, according to theverge, this is what Apple wants to do. Can you tell Apple that it is a stupid move just as you told me? Perhaps it will listen to you. :)

"It was a bold move, with Apple signaling its desire to control core functions of the vehicle like HVAC, as well as the speedometer and odometer."

I won’t buy another car without CarPlay, no offense to those who would.

Sorry GM EVs and Tesla.
I was in that camp too, but now that Tesla has the Apple Music app I’m ok with no CarPlay in my Tesla. Tesla’s software is good enough😊. If GM can do something similar, more power to ‘m. CarPlay was a superior experience in my previous two cars (Ford and BMW). Not so much in the Tesla.

I did look at how the Xiaomi SU7 does Apple CarPlay… now that is cool!!

My Chevy Volt is now 10 years old and it has the old proprietary Infotainment system. I have no experience with CarPlay but I'm sure it's light years better. Chevrolet's current electric car lineup doesn't interest me. Will have to look elsewhere when it's time.
