I don't understand why these are so popular. They are less reliable, slower, and more expensive compared to just a regular buttons. - Anyone could say that about touch interface and many many things.

Its called progression and evolution. You don't invent, you die eventually.

If people where content with things in 19th&20th century we wouldn't have most of the stuff we have now.
Its that simple!

One of the best things IMO since I've switched from an iPhone X to an S20 is going back to a fingerprint scanner.

It's been nearly 100% reliable for me, and while FaceID is good in most situations, there are many when it's really annoying (like if your phone is laying on a desk and you want to quickly glance at something without picking your phone up).

I don’t miss it. As soon as I think of putting my finger for a scan I somehow start to sweat and it’s not working. Also happened to me at the US boarder, almost thought I was gonna get send away after like 10 failed attempts 😅 FaceID works for me every time, when not wearing a mask. With TouchID I used a somewhat simply passcode cuz I had to type it in so often

When Apple remove the notch and add the in display fingerprint scanner, I’ll consider looking at a newer iPhone IF no PWM, small model available and reasonable price.

I enjoy my new SE and see no reason to move to a more modern iPhone.

So you prefer this super dated huge bezel on top instead of a tiny notch you forget is even there after 5 minute of usage?

Oh the old SE frame, PLEASE bring that back for the 12 and I will buy one for everyone in my family

Yes, I’m usually the one preaching for progress, but it’s not progress if the evolution is worse than the previous version.

I would rather have FaceID than a Finger print sensor all day long. I would take it a step farther have the option to have it go straight to my home screen without swiping.

Just give the option when setting up FaceID to allow a second face be setup...one with a mask and one without a mask.

In this era of COVID19 we all might be wearing masks and GLOVES. Gloves make fingerprint sensors kinda moot.

If Apple can straighten out the technical issues and have touch id under glass to be as good as touch id 1/2, it would only broaden the scope of use cases. But I cannot see Apple implementing touch id under glass the way it appears to be somewhat unreliable.

I'd never use Touch ID and would be unhappy having to pay for the tech I never use. Face ID has been excellent for me.

It might not be the popular opinion, but a large part of the reason why I chose the 8 Plus over the X was for TouchID over FaceID. The former is still my preference for a handheld device.

I’m wearing 2 masks (N95 covered by a surgical mask cuz medical-grade N95’s are scarce), goggles, hat, gown. Please bring back the TouchID or let me unlock my 📱 with my ⌚

I'd love this in concept, but without the physical location of the Touch ID/home button I could see a lot of user frustration by misplacing finger by even a little bit. However, if a user was able to say I want my Touch ID location to be on the bottom right or bottom left then that could be a game changer for usability. I have no idea if that's even feasible...

Dude, your proposal was worse.
I want touchID on the front as its the most logical place. Having it on side has too many disadvantages. (working with cases, everyone has a different natural grip position etc.)
Under the display is where its meant to be ideally any part of the display which is probably eventually where we might go. Or in the middle as that is where most people would place the thumb naturally.

You may not be a great designer and you may not have the intuition but that doesn't you can't learn.

:)

I mean, depending on how you look at it, the iPhone SE is a modern iPhone. It's just that Touch ID is one of its marketed features.

Having Face ID as the primary and then a fingerprint scan button on the lock screen is a perfect solution in light of current events.

This is the solution for android manufacturers lacking the ability to do proper face ID. I guess it's a combination of Apple having many patents on the tech and google being really bad at implementing face ID into android that other manufacturers have had to settle for in display fingerprint readers.

Since FaceID (ipX) has gotten really heavy compared to the ip7 I owned before (and still do). I wonder if the increased weight is due to the FaceID components.

As far as I know there are sensors on the market Infineon Real3d

If nothing else, the need to have something that works when the user has a facemask on may have potentially shifted priorities towards a dual biometric solution.
If nothing else, expect to see iOS 14 have FaceID rejiggered to work a lot better with people wearing masks.

I am actually buying the iPhone SE due to the touchID, if iphone12 has one maybe I should wait...

I and many others wouldn’t complain if they had both faceId and an under the screen fingerprint sensor.
