I’m pretty sure Google apps do the same.

That’s why I’ve definitely stuck with watching YouTube, and eventually using GMaps, on Safari. YouTube in Safari is great, thankfully, but Google Maps on Safari is, admittedly, a pain to use. But anyways my first option is always Apple Maps.

No Facebook or Google apps on my iPhone, aside from WhatsApp (ughhh, can’t escape that one)

I don't understand, doesn't "derive" mean the same thing as "observe" and then take action such as sending targeted ads?!?

I use neither of the apps, but I'm sure there are others. Apple needs to continue to tighten this up.
Apple can only tighten so much. Folks still using these apps want others to know who they are and what they’re about. There’s only so much privacy you can try to give someone that’s shouting “I’m Abigail and I LOVE DOGS!” at the top of their lungs.

Wouldn't be surprised to hear one of these days that Apple has been selling private data of a billion users, only that they have a different interpretation of what is "selling" or "data" or "private" or "user".
The market cap would be a WHOLE lot larger if that was the case. They’d have to do some really creative complex level accounting to hide that huge haul. :)

Apples app tracking transparency is marketing, not an actual feature.
It’s a real thing, but if someone makes 70-80 social media updates in a day, even if it’s just liking or commenting, there’s a VERY good chance I can look at their historical pattern before they enabled privacy and connect them back to that data AFTER they enabled privacy.

If I can look at the text of a message I’ve received and determine it’s from “Paul” without looking at who it’s from, computers can do MUCH better.

What? Apple’s privacy schtick was just marketing?? What?

Oh, wait, they’re still planning on scanning your iPhone to report you to the police, so yeah.

It’s always been marketing. And as Apple becomes more and more of a “services company”, they’ll eventually drop even the façade.

It always was. Any ads I see are apples ads. In settings. In apps I pay for.

Lol, all facebook products forces me to accept all their cookies, otherwise I cant even log in, so even by browser is not worth to log in

Removed all Google anything from my devices in 2011 (you should too).
Dumped FB in 2015 (and only used it a handful of times before then).
I know that when I’m online, or if I even have my iPhone on me, my location, preferences, history, interests, behaviors, thoughts (ha), etc. are all being monitored, logged, bought and sold. That said, there are things I can do to mitigate this, and I am actively doing such. We don’t have to be the product.
I don't like being tracked as much as the next person. However, my dislike of FB and other socials is not so much the tracking, but the impact on one's interpersonal relationships and psyche.

Of course the whole point of social media is for the company to make money. Money is made by selling advertisements, and that means driving clicks and logons, replies and likes. So the whole system, IMHO is designed to create discord and conflict. Social media is outright BORING when people aren't arguing over something. It could be as trivial as mom's green bean casserole, or as impactful as the pandemic or politics. The goal is to create discord.

So, really, the goal of Facebook and social media is to piss you off or make you feel bad. The funny cat videos and pictures of your cousin's second child are all just busy work. People don't hang around online all day for that stuff.

When someone talks trash about your stance on a politician or hot button issue of the day, it's game on. People are drawn to that stuff like flies to the proverbial excrement. And heaven help you if someone misinterprets what you say online and takes serious umbrage with it. It spills over into real life relationships. It causes real harm, real mental health issues, and it's toxic. Not to mention a lot of people will say things on FB that if they said it to your face would probably warrant a throat punch, and they know it. They do it anyway, or they do it because it's on FB and they can get away with it.

Like excessive use of drugs or alcohol, most people's lives are better off without social media. Or at least seriously curtailing it's use. I am better off for distancing myself from it.

Don't use Twitter, Instagram, Facebook and don't miss them. They are only the tip of the iceberg in terms of tracking you on the web and in real space. All of these activities, for whatever purpose they are conducted, should simply be illegal. Web sites and apps should be limited, by law, to collecting only the data necessary to delivering the service to the user and should not be permitted to sell or share any data with affiliates or other third parties that are not necessary to provide those services. They should not be permitted data longer than necessary to provide the service.

You do realize that CSAM is not new and not unique to Apple. Other companies have had CSAM implemented in their products and services for quite some time. They've just not ben forthcoming about it.

You do realize that just about every entity that you deal has been selling your data without your consent. If you have an GMail account or use Google Chrome as your browser or use Google as your search engine, your "private data" has been harvested and sold. Just yesterday it was reported that Verizon Wireless has been collecting data of their subscribers unbeknownst to them. The list goes on and on and on. Do you express that much outrage to those companies and entities or just Apple?
Right, so Apple talks bigger than everyone else about privacy and security, but as you acknowledge, in reality it is just like everyone else.

I’m off this garbage app Facebook since a long time, the others never used for the same reason.

Every time an app has “Ask to don’t track” I wonder maybe because I didn’t ask Please
it will track me anyway…..

We should have an On or Off button , no question asked.

There is in the control you toggle to turn it off. It's just that certain people don't understand how NO actually means NO.

NO =/= yes

NO =/= maybe

NO = NO!!!

Save for Messenger, which is how some family gets a hold of me, I am not on anything Facebook. I use uMatrix on Firefox to block ANYTHING from them, Google, etc. And yet they still do not understand that NO MEANS NO, especially when I am not on their site.

PS--MacRumors is the single worst site for trackers also. iOS Safari routinely tells me how MR is the largest purveyor of DoubleClick, FB, etc tracking.

So what the hell is the point of Apple even including the choice, if they're just going to allow these scumbags to track us anyway?
Because Apple can only block so much. For example, if someone posts on Facebook “HEY, it’s ya girl Stacy down at the third street Starbucks, come say hi!”, while Apple has blocked location tracking, it doesn’t take location tracking in this instance for Facebook to figure out where Stacy is. :)

Take a selfie in a public space? It can be determined where she is by her surroundings… or, you know, if she posts, “Having a great time at Melbin Park!” People are on Facebook because they want to be tracked. Apple makes it a little harder, but the users keep it easy enough!

Just feels so slimy by these companies. I’ve asked not to be tracked, yet they are basically giving me a middle finger and are doing it anyway.

But I guess that’s what happens when services are “free”. I appreciate the replies here that suggest using web browsers over apps.

Great, so in that video where all the advertisers started following that guy around, instead of vanishing when "Ask App Not to Track" is clicked, instead you have a bunch of people wearing black suits and sunglasses with Snap or FaceBook or whatever badges swooping in. Nice.
