If you care about gaming in any capacity, you shouldn't be buying Apple to begin with
It depends on what you want to play.

Apple offers free cloud saving, unlimited controller profiles, a persistant gamer profile across games and devices, support for all major controllers and a family-friendly subscription service.

No, you're not going to replace your PS5 with an Apple TV any time soon. But the iPhone is a much stronger platform than given credit. I can play every major Square Enix RPG of the 1990s, bottomless RPGs like Disgaea and Stardew Valley and classic quick-play iOS titles like Tiny Wings and Trism. Its an agnostic platform that hosts Xbox games like Halo and Geometry Wars, PS titles like Flower and Journey alongside Nintendo franchises like Mario.

I can run ScummVM and play Monkey Island 2 or Fate of Atlantis and emulators now fill in the gaps. My PSP digital collection and Wii Virtual Console games are finally free! xCloud allows sub access to modern titles (and free Fortnite) and a Backbone ties it all together in a slick interface.

A Steamdeck or Switch are better, deeper devices but you can't fit either of them in your pocket for a quick go waiting at the Doctors.

iPad Pro models accounted for the majority of Apple's iPad sales in the June quarter, up from the same quarter a year ago, based on the latest report from Consumer Intelligence Research Partners (CIRP).

Apple updated the 11-inch and 13-inch iPad Pro models in May 2024 with the M4 chip, OLED display technology, and a thinner, lighter design. Pricing on the 11-inch OLED iPad Pro starts at $999, and pricing on the 13-inch OLED iPad Pro starts at $1,299.

In contrast, the "iPad" is Apple's low-priced mainstream iPad, last updated in October 2022 with a complete redesign, larger display, USB-C port, A14 Bionic chip, 12-megapixel camera, and more. The iPad starting price is $349, but the pricey M4 iPad Pro models are proving to be more popular, and even appear to have cut into iPad mini and iPad Air sales.

According to CIRP, in the June 2024 quarter, iPad Pro (both the 11-inch and 13-inch models) accounted for 43% of total iPad sales, an increase from 38% in the year-ago June 2023 quarter. Meanwhile, the iPad remained at 35% compared to the previous year. In the same time periods, iPad Air accounted for 12% of all iPad sales, down from 15% a year ago, and the iPad mini accounted for 10%, down from 12% in the June 2023 quarter.

It's worth noting that the iPad mini has not been updated by Apple since September 2021, yet the iPad Air was updated in May alongside the M4 iPad Pro.

Commenting on the figures, CIRP suggests early adopters are driving the strong iPad Pro sales: "As we've seen with many other Apple product launches, the first-acting consumers appear to have gravitated to the high-end, most expensive models available, in this case the iPad Pros." iPad users: Does that align with your own purchase decisions? Let us know in the comments.

...cause... you keep giving us a total junk of a mini... maybe thats why no one wants it? its my fav size by far, but it always feels 2 years behind the pro models. give me a dang pro mini !

Too many SKUs.
Should just have iPad, iPad Pro (remove the Air), and Mini.

The Apple small enough to do well with very few products in the lineup is long since gone now.

They don't make "too many" SKUs to not be profitably selling ALL of those SKUs.

Apple is often either richest or just shy of richest company in the world and yet they have the FEWEST product lines of those entities at the top with them. What does that imply? They need MORE lines of products & services... more SKUs.

That may go against our nostalgia of the "good old days" but modern Apple Inc has long since left that Apple Computer behind. To hold/grow from here begs for MORE product & services lines, not less. There's no way back to "just 1 phone model" or "just 1 or 2 iPad models", etc unless we want an Apple that has relatively tiny revenue, as it had back when the lines looked like that.

I think, though, that the iPad Pro models are still WAY too expensive. An iPad Pro 13" 512 GB goes for US$1,500, versus US$1,100 for an iPad Air 13" 512 GB.

Its why Apple is so generous on their Ipad trade-ins. Not complaining and about to take advantage of it, but its their built in discount.

I‘ve always bought the Air and I bought the new 11” Air online as soon as they went on sale. I have no need for “pro” features and power. But then I saw the 11” Pro in person at an Apple Store. I was SOOO blown away by the slimness, weight, and incredible screen that I returned the Air and paid up for the Pro. I still don’t need (or use) the ”pro” features and power but I don’t care because I absolutely LOVE this iPad.

Same. I felt the 11" Pro was much nicer in the hand and I wanted FaceID. While I never really used iPads very much (mainly to read papers at the end of the semester) the 11" Pro M4 really feels like something I could get comfortable using more regularly.

For me it's all about FaceID. I was a bit sceptical at first since I was pretty happy with TouchID on my iPhone but once I got my first FaceID-enabled iPhone I totally fell in love with that technology. I already had the latest iPad but from then on I was craving one with FaceID and as soon as the first iPad with FaceID came out, which was a Pro model obviously, I bought it and could never imagine having an iPad without FaceID now which, unless Apple changes tack, locks me into the Pro range now even though I don't really need the extra compute power, better screen etc.

I know that plenty of people prefer TouchID and I respect that but for me it's FaceID all the way.
I have the 13” Air, which I love but the power Touch ID button, I do not like. I’ve never wanted Face ID before but I do for this. I wouldn’t pay Pro prices for it though.

So Ipad Pro's are outselling one product that hasn't been updated in three years and another which everyone expected to be updated months ago.

Who would've guessed?

The pro is a smart choice and isn't going to break the bank if you are only upgrading every couple of years. There's alot of goodies under the hood that set it apart from the Air.

Most anyone with a 8th, 9th or 10th or Mini are going to be holding onto their pennies waiting for the new ones together released.

The Mini isn't not junk, just 3 years old and everyone is waiting for the next one.

Sales are down more likely because everyone who wanted one, has one, and there's nothing to update to since forever.

It's not really fair to say the iPad Pro is eating into iPad Mini sales when the iPad Mini hasn't been updated in almost 3 years. I've actually been planning on buying an iPad Mini for over a year now but have been waiting for an updated model because I don't want to feel like a mug by buying three year old tech for the full price.

Exactly this for me too. That, and hoarding high refresh rates on the Pros. If they came out with a ProMotion iPad Mini I would definitely buy it.

I love my M4 iPad Pro. Every iPad Pro I have owned has remained relevant for years and years. My 2018 iPad Pro was so amazing that I bought the first M1 Macbook no questions asked.

Best iPad launch in years. Commercial was amazing and I got the 11 for my bed and 13 for work with my MBP. Even glued the Burton keyboard case to a pitaka case with handles to have a cool briefcase for magic keyboard

I have the money, so i guess I am one of the who.
That must be nice. :)

That Pro is over a thousand dollars more expensive here in Australia! $2550! The Air 13” 512 is still rather expensive at $1830, but marginally more reasonable.

are these percentages based on revenue or units? makes a big difference when pro's can cost 2-3x as much a classic.

And I thought I would regret getting the Mini so late in its cycle last July. It may be inferior on paper, but its size and weight has made it my favourite iPad to date by far.
I felt the same when I purchased mine last year in May. Even when Apple updates the Mini 6, I plan to keep my Mini 6 until it stops working unless Apple give me a good trade-in value, which I doubt they will.

Different iPad models for different needs, I personally use an iPad mini. I also use an iPhone 13 mini, when my eyes get strained on the phone. I used the iPad.
