Back before iPhone 4 released, Apple was filing patents for an under display solar charging system. This is what I thought was the answer. Something that could constantly recharge the battery...more from sunlight, less from ambient indoor light. But always recharging. This was probably discarded due to the fact that it aged the lithium batteries significantly. But someone thought it was good idea regardless of what it did to the batteries.
But a system like that is the future. Incorporate solar to harness the free energy aspect of it, and extend the life of the device from hours to days potentially, depending on conditions and efficiency. All that is needed to really pull this off is a battery that can handle this type of "abuse".
Ya know, I'm the king of "charge anxiety" when dealing with my phone, but I've come to realize the solutions to this on the open market sufficiently negate the need for drastic improvements in battery life in devices like Phones.
Figure, they're making a device that the majority of people using will at some course of the day be within practical distance of grid power or 12V power at some point. External battery packs have become so commonplace they are available in large retail chains cheap.
The most time I spend away from the ability to charge my phone is when I take the commuter train into the city to see my doctors and for imaging. There is 110V power on the train, but it's not very accessible. I typically pack for the trip taking an external battery pack that is more than robust, and a 30W wall charger. When on the train, I keep my phone topped off with the battery pack (I carry a backpack) and charge the battery pack at the hospital. So by the time I'm headed home, the pack and the phone are both fully charged.
When driving, I use my vehicle's USB ports or a 12V plug in to charge. I would say a majority of vehicles today have a cigar lighter 12V port on them.
Wireless charging makes this even less of an issue. When I'm at my desk, my phone sits in a wireless Qi charger I got from Anker for less than $20. It's a practical way to keep the phone on my desk and charges it at the same time.
I as of yet have had my 12 Pro below 50% and my old Xr only dropped below 50 when I forgot to have my equpipment with me.
