Compromises:
1. Single speaker
2. Single camera
3. Extremely poor battery life (due to thinness)
4. Inferior C1X 5G modem compared to SD X80 in Pro series
5. Too thin to hold.
6. Busted Wifi 7 that is incapable of 320 Mhz channel width on 6Ghz.
7. No mmWave which is in Pro models.
8. No display output via USB-C to an external monitor or TV.

Yes you missed some stuff:
- CPU throttling compared to the Pros
- Binned version of the Pro CPU
- USB 2.0 port speeds
- Overheating issues

These are fair points, but they're not going to affect the vast majority of users.

The only things you could really make an argument that most people would miss is single camera and smaller battery than the Pro models.

You could start making the same argument for MacBook Air and say it shouldn't exist as well? or iPad Air?

Apple could address most of these, if they wanted to.

Samsung have already shown that 1 & 2 can be overcome (the S25 edge has stereo speakers and dual cameras). There is the possibility to boost the battery life if Apple adoped SiC battery technology (I understand the larger OEMs are holding off to understand the durability, for now). For 4 & 6, it's likely the whole iPhone 18 range will use C2 / N2 wireless chips so you would hope Apple would boost the performance (if not it's not just an Air problem). Too thin to hold is subjective.

With all that said, boosting the battery of the Pro models just emphasises the gap in battery life, all the reviews have highlighted battery life as an issue and the price boost likely puts people off further. At $1000, this isn't an iPod Nano, where the form factor and low price justified the compromises (no screen, much smaller storage); this is someone's main phone.

Good. Now bring back the Plus series !!
With how big the regular iPhone has become (6.3"), the phablet size represents a small niche that's probably best served by the Pro Max. Because if you're interested in the largest possible display, you're most likely also interested in the best possible display, as well as cameras and battery life.

I think Apple came to the same conclusion, because the Plus wasn't selling so well.

Except the battery life isn’t poor. It’s better than my 15 Pro it replaced (even when new) and equal to the 16 Pro. And nearly equal to the iPhone 17. It’s just not as long as the 17 Pro.

The wifi 7 issue isn’t unique to the Air, though. Any Apple devices with the same N1 chip will have that limitation.

Not sure too thin to hold is a thing (not for me), but disappears in pocket like no other iPhone has.

The modem is fast — just missing mm wave which only matters in select locations.

I think the main issue with the Air is price. Too close to the Pro’s price.

First of all it means that there's a great demand for eSIM, which wasn't a thing in Chinese phones up until now.

Uh huh... sure... definitely not the design... wow, this website is insane.
Then there's a difference between initially selling out and long-term demand. There's usually always a lag in supply to demand this early in the cycle, and a company working on this scale always needs to make adjustments along the way as they're focusing on catching up with the demand.
were you saying this when Air launched before?

1. Sophisticated people use earbuds and don't play audio in public
2. No edge distortion, barreling or chromatic aberration?
3. Battery life is great. Not everyone is a shutin.
4. Theoretical speeds aren't real life, the difference is minimal
5. This is a negative? Peak nitpicking
6. More battery consumption for minimal gains?
7. Not a necessity
8. A future update will enable this

It's too big, it got even bigger than the other iPhones instead of getting smaller, like the real iPhone Air should be.

Its too heavy, same weight as iPhone 16 instead of <100g, like the real iPhone Air should be.

It has terrible camera bump and is not really thin <5mm, like the real iPhone Air should be.

What does the weak demand of an iPhone Air have to do with a foldable? Weird conclusion. That's like saying there is no demand for vegan products because some people eat meat
Because there’s no number tied to the name “iPhone Air” many people think it’s a one-off device and will be replaced by a Fold (which needs to be thin - hence why the Air exists at all)

It has too many shortcomings sacrificed in the name of thinness. If this were 2011, Air might make sense, but as it stands, a single camera phone at that price point was never going to fly. Honestly, even the base iPhone 17 does more than enough for most people.

As for AI, outside the tech-savvy crowd most people still have no idea what benefits it actually offers (well sometimes tech savvy people overthinks it and reject AI altogether). People don’t know what they don’t know, so it never factors into their buying decisions. Personally, even the basic writing tools are a step forward, but using Apple Intelligence to generate a simple email draft feels absurdly over-engineered. It’s far easier to write a draft in the ChatGPT app, proof-read it, copy the result, and paste it into Mail. I can’t imagine my partner doing that, let alone my parents. So people just give up. On Gmail, composing from a draft is much simpler. Even if Apple somehow magically nails the AI, I doubt the user experience will ever be simple enough for ordinary users.

I fail to understand how most MR members assume "uumm ohh hur dur people are not always specs crazy and don't go into spec detail"

This is totally wrong. People are well aware of the specs and if they are not tech savvy, they ask a friend or family member who is tech savvy for their opinions before dropping $1000s of cash on ultra high end phones.

Most tech savvy people are not recommending iPhone Air as it is a demo/introductory/R&D product for future phones. So it's not yet a great buy. Maybe in future.

Sorry, so when Apple doesn't sell out of something it means no one wants it, and when Apple does sell out it means they just only had a few on hand?

So basically Apple always fails in your mind. Why are you here again?
Every year they more or less sell out of everything everywhere, and then it takes a while for them to get new shipments. So you can always talk about their amazing success if you want to make a headline out of it. The real question of whether or not it's an actual success is if they keep on selling out every new shipment, and if those are sized at maximum capacity to produce them.

So then why didn't they make the Air sell out every else at the initial launch instead of only specific colors
