8 month old 2010 MacBook Pro is having kernel panic problems. At least once a week. Took it to them about a month ago and after them "running tests" they couldn't find anything wrong. Their advice was to do a clean install. I did that and I just got another kernel panic. Other wise the mac runs great. How do I request a new unit since this one seems to be faulty? I bought it from an Apple store and its 8 months old. Great shape/condition otherwise. No apple care on it. Thanks

Is your RAM Apple or aftermarket that you installed? If aftermarket what brand, it could be RAM causing it, no matter if its apple or not.

Do you know how to read your console logs? They will reveal what is causing the panics.

If you spotlight search for "console" you'll be able to open it. Then hit Show Log List button.

You should see System Diagnostic Reports and User Diagnostic Reports on the left. You should see the panics there. You can copy paste them in a post if you would like help deciphering them.

I don't understand why I keep getting Kernel Panics. I have replaced my RAM and HDD but the kernel panics started happening a few months before then. I then took my MacBook Pro to the Apple store and they kept it overnight. 3 days later I go to pick it up and they tell me they couldn't find anything wrong software or hardware wise. Their advice was to do a total clean install. So about a month later I did a total clean install, manually putting my stuff back on..not using time machine or migration assistant. I was going well until I just got ANOTHER kernel panic. I really thought doing the clean install would fix it. My mac has been running faster and less buggy after the clean install.

Whats your advice? Do you think the kernel panics will stop when I upgrade to the Mac OS X Lion? Like I said before, the kernel panics happened BEFORE I opened up my computer and upgraded the RAM and HDD, so putting the original parts back in I don't think will fix anything. Plus, after upgrading to 8GB of RAM, I don't think I can go back to 4GB...it wouldn't be the same.

Here are the specs of my MBP by the way..if it helps.

2.4Ghz Mid 2010 MacBook Pro 15 inch

Also, the kernel panics usually occur randomly at least once every 7 or so days. Every time it happens I'm usually running: safari, mail, adium, activity monitor, skype, echofon, and the drobo app.

That's a cool tip I never knew about. Anywho, after doing the clean install, this was the first kernel panic that I've had, so I figure the past kernel panics were all erased in the log. The kernel panic that happened today should technically be in the folder but when restarting, the blue screen stayed up for over 2 minutes, usually it doesn't last that long. So I did another hard restart on top of the first hard restart which is why I'm guessing the kernel panic isn't logged. I don't see any crashes for today's date. All the other crashes logged aren't kernel panic related.

You can't. They will only repair it. Replacement units are usually given out under extraordinary conditions (i.e. the specific part of the unit broke down several times, or for example major parts stopped working several times).
Apple got me a replacement unit after:
2x HDD replacement
1x Display replacement
1x Logic board replacement
1x Fans replacement

I also had apple care and was pissed off as hell, since all of these problems appeared within 2 months. The unit was about a year old.
I don't want to be mean and tell you how to get a unit off of Apple, since that isn't the point. They gave me one since the unit I had simply was extremely bad production and I was pissed off as I had my MacBook Pro more in repairs than in my possession for 2 months. After I got the new unit, I bought AppleCare on my own. I didn't take the refund of old AppleCare or anything. Seemed like a fair thing to do.

P.S. I'm not a rich bastard, just a student who had to save months to buy AppleCare.

you completely disregarded what I said. Check the console, not the folder.

Apple has been shifting the locations of where its keeping the log files in 10.6.5 and 10.6.6 so it's possible you won't see them unless you look through console.

It could be your 3rd party ram too. Seeing a log would help us to know.

Yeah, that makes sense. I bought my previous macbook from them and it had a dead pixel that i found 30 days after buying it. they let me speak to the manager and he allowed for a swap thank goodness. I don't really need a new replacement because my mbp is in great shape..i just want the end result to be no more kernel panics

When the hardware diagnostics don't show any obvious hardware fault, trying a fresh install of the OS is the next recommendation.

Since that didn't work, I'd take it back to the Genius Bar and have them figure out another way of troubleshooting it.

Generally after 3 major repairs, they'll swap you for another.

Alrighty. I'll probably have to do that again.

How can you not have AppleCare on it if you have only had it for eight months?
Check your warranty status here.

How can you not have AppleCare on it if you have only had it for eight months?
Check your warranty status here.

I think you're confusing the warranty with AppleCare, they're two totally different items. The warranty (as I'm sure you're aware) is 1 year and includes 90 day of free phone support. AppleCare extends the warranty to 3 years from the original date of purchase and includes telephone support.

Reading your panic report it looks like something is going on with Safari. If you're using any extensions that could be the cause or it's possible your copy of Safari is simply corrupt.

One way of telling is using another browser, if it proves to be stable then you then know Safari is the problem and then you can remove it and download a fresh copy.

True, sorry about that

I installed a fresh copy of OS X when I did the clean install though, so shouldn't it be as if I installed a clean version of Safari? Also, since the clean install, I don't think I've installed any plugins that didn't come with it.

From what I can tell it's crashing when you're using Safari. If you use any extensions those could be it too. If you're not using extensions then it's possible your copy of Safari is corrupt.

It's simple enough to test, just download another browser and try using it. If the KP's don't occur again then that pretty much points the finger at Safari. The fix would be to trash your copy of Safari, then re-download it.

Install Firefox and try using it instead of Safari for a bit and see if the kernel panics continue, if so then there is another problem other then Safari, if not, then Safari is the issue and you can focus on that.

I would buy the AppleCare ASAP given you know it has had problems in the past. If your factory warranty runs out before you get the AppleCare, you may not be able to purchase AppleCare, even if it is only a few days difference. Make sure you get it on time. I cannot tell you how much money AppleCare has saved us (as well as outside insurance).

I don't know much about the kernel panics other than I tend to cause it on nights I decide to watch a movie and bust out the Jolly Time, but I can tell you that Apple, like other reputable companies, has been known to replace items and/or replace parts as needed to fix the issue. Like any company, they usually don't fix complicated issues on the first try, but after a few times, if the problem has caused considerable inconvenience/stress, call the customer service (not tech support) people, and let them know in a way which both shows the severity of the issue but also is relayed in a courteous manner. You will be surprised how far that goes. From your posts thus far you sound like a very level headed person and I imagine you know most of this already, but I know how upsetting computer issues can be (especially if you depend on your MBP like I do), but statistically speaking, people who get angry and flip out on customer service have a much lower probability of getting their issue resolved and have been found to get less of a satisfactory response from the company. It's easy to forget that on the other end of the chat/call/email/etc, there is another person whom like us, has feelings and when they get agitated often do not want to deal with the issue. Hope all works out!
