This thing also has a brand new OS that RIM bought. I know why RIM had to do that, but it would have been a lot better if they had got the OS out the door a year or two ago inside a RIM phone. Now they will be a good 3.5 years behind. It is hard to believe this thing will present a refined user experience.

Again, what is the: Price, battery life, telco contract?

Those things will determine the possibility of this gizmo surviving more than all the specs in the world.

The OS exists since 1982, it's not new.

The OS, QNX, has been around longer than iOS.
I don't think RIM is too worried about it.
Nice looking device.
Not too big, weighs less than a pound and runs real Unix.
I'm in provided it's not priced to the moon.

Capacitive Multitouch

Everyone seems to be ignoring the patents on this.

I'm worried that with every other vendor using this technology, that the courts are going to find it difficult to rule in favor of Apple.

Anyone else pissed and worried?

Apple didn't invent it and they don't hold the only patent on it.
There are many variations and patents on implementing it.

Also, why would anyone be pissed by having more than one vendor to choose from for touch devices?

Looks pretty neat and not a direct ripoff of the iPad like the Galaxy Tab. Instead they copied the basically-dead WebOS, which is an interesting choice.

webOS is far from dead. People who have used it regularly know that it's quite possibly the best overall mobile OS there is. It multitasks better than BlackBerry's OS by far, and is more open architecture than iOS.

While I still want a full Windows or Mac OS tablet for the freedom of loading ANY app I want....my desired fallback would be a webOS tablet.

Likely to appease carriers.

We know there's no technical limitations that would have prevented Bluetooth pairing between the iPad and the iPhone, but rather that Apple didn't want to piss off it's carrier partners or allow the Wi-Fi version to completely cannibalize the stand-alone 3G sales.

Actually, producing a cell data network capable version WOULD have appeased the carriers more, exactly what Apple did. Remember the carriers WANT you to be paying for separate data connections for all of your devices.

Anyone that still gets excited over Flash on these devices, clearly hasn't tried flash on a hacked Apple device or an Android device. It is shoddy. You end up with a platform that doesn't work for the hardware, ultimately it becomes a glorified movie player, which we don't need.

QNX is a real-time OS. Old multitasking experience does not apply.

Why get this over say.. a laptop?

Don't get me wrong, I hate on the iPad just like any other tablet or netbook.

because....

1. you wouldn't need to wait for it to boot up...instant on/off
2. touch screen
3. need no mouse/trackpad
4. apps
5. one screen instead of screen and keyboard
6. better battery (ipad does 2 days without charging)
7. less crash
8. more appealing than netbook
9. takes up less space
10. its 2010....gotta try new gadgets! :D

Competition is good.

Hopefully the dual core a9 will push apple to follow suit.

Yup.

One big turn off with forums like this is more than a few posters just don't understand how competition works. If RIM et al didn't make these announcements (and developments), Apple would drip feed us mediocre updates in technology every 12 months.

We need everyone fighting against each other for market share and our moneyz, it's the only way we'll get the best tech/user experience for the best price.

If there's one thing that RIM really nailed here, was the idea treating their tablet as a complimentary accessory to their phone platform. This is something that Apple has expressly avoided doing. Likely to appease carriers.

But that's the thing. How many people would have gotten a Wi-Fi iPad instead of a 3G iPad if they knew the Wi-Fi version could tether to their iPhone via Bluetooth and/or Wi-Fi? That's right.

This is a huge feature for RIM and good on them for exploiting the market opportunity.

Apple will probably consider introducing this feature in the future, but it will likely be artificially tied to future hardware to access.

Do you seriously think BB is going to be able to dump massive amounts of usage onto their carriers without some sort of agreement with them?
"We've been enabling our users to launch toy sailboats in your back yard pool, but starting next week, we're going to be hosting Sumo Belly Flop competitions. Hope you don't mind."
Yeah, BB's carriers are going to roll over for that one.
There will be costs for the 'pairing'.

The 800 pound gorilla in the room is the BATTERY LIFE.

I will admit, the video looks fantastic. It would be great to have flash support and true multitasking and all that jazz, but let's think about it. The iPad has 10 hours of battery life (in real life usage, some get even more than that).

Being thinner, lighter, and smaller than the iPad and having a dual core processor AND supporting all these processor intensive things (1080p video, Flash, etc.) I got a feeling we'll be looking at 3-4 hours of real life usage MAX. Probably 2 hours running 1080p YouTube videos.

I like the idea that I can pick up my iPad anytime and take it somewhere with me, leaving the charger behind, and not have to worry about if it I charged it the last time I used it or if where I'm going is going to have an electrical outlet like I had to with my laptops in the past.

If this thing, however, turns out to have 10 hours like the iPad than I will sell my iPad and buy this - assuming its priced reasonably. I assume they will price at $449 or $499 to compete with the iPad, but if it ends up being something like $699 for one that has all the features they say it will (versus crippled cheaper versions) it will not go far.

Since it's targetted towards business the name should have been WorkBook and not Play Book!

Also, I am not trying to be pessimistic but the next year launch may be too late...corporations are already adopting iPad and I hope it does not become another Storm for RIMM! RIMM cannot afford another Storm hit NOW!

Quite interesting that this gets 58 Positives; 28 Negatives, while the iPad introduction got 221 Positives; 410 Negatives. Just goes to show just how many trolls that show up here at times like that.. and then they tell us it's Apple that has blind fanboys.

Get a dictionary and look up the word "Playbook" All one word, not broken apart.
playbook - a scheme or set of strategies for conducting a business campaign or a political campaign; "they borrowed a page from the playbook of the opposition"

And in an instant, Galaxy Tab is stillborn.

If anyone was going to make an honest competitor to the iPad, it was RIM. And they did! Good on them. If it's under $500 I'll buy one in no time flat.
