Perhaps playbook refers to the book that football managers have, detailing the strategies of the game for the team...i am positive its called a playbook. Perhaps its also a term used in business for corporate strategy?

That OS looks slick. Hope it can deliver on its promises *stares at JooJoo and Adam*

Looks kind of unattractive. And thick.
Not gonna be getting one. :p

Competition is spectacular- especially the front facing camera.

That said, I await the next iPad...

Howard Stern was talking about this today. He was mentioning how blackberry can't come up with its own innovations.

Now I realize the technology that goes into an iphone or an ipad is not solely the creation of Apple. However, Apple is innovative in the sense that it brings to market products with function and style that are appealing and convenient. They find a market for these new products before others do. This is what Stern and others mean when they say companies are continually "stealing" apples' ideas.

Looks good, but...

...Probably not for me.

It might be nice for existing Blackberry users, but if you can only tether it to a Blackberry, you've just drastically limited the appeal to a ton of people.

It's likely to be pretty attractive for existing RIM customers, but I doubt it will attract any new customers to the RIM fold. It might keep some from bolting though... so good for RIM.

Right now it's basically vapour-ware anyway.

Wow this makes the iPad look really old and toy-like.

At 7 inches, it's also a lot more practical

I think you should wait until it's actually available before say it makes the iPad look old. By the time this gets to the maket the iPad will be old and the MkII version will be along to put this in it's place. Given the spec and function quoted I doubt it's battery life will come anywhere near that of the iPads. Anyone can put together a high spec'd bit of hardware but then try to make it run for 10 hours or more!

The specifications sound awesome. I wonder what OS this is and whether it's any good compared to iOS. But if it runs Flash, I'd like to see a real demo of how it performs and how it affects battery life and all that stuff!

I think Blackberry hit a homerun with this. The specs are amazing...I hope the battery life doesn't take too much of a hit. The multitasking (webOS-esque) destroys the iPad if it works like it does in the video.

Nice production house video they released (by my calculations, that bezel is at least as wide as the iPad's, btw), but the very clear intent of the video is to appeal to BB owners and to people willing to purchase a phone and BB service. The big questions they did not answer were:

  • How much will it cost?
  • What will the battery life be?
  • When and where can one actually be purchased?
  • Will you still have a useful device if you want nothing to do with a BB phone?

On the cost front, they are clearly positioning this as a premium device, and they announced it with no pricing indications. It's the play device for a professional as far as I can tell. In other words, cha-ching. My conclusion it will not be price-competitive with the iPad or iPad 2. If it was, we would have heard about it. Repeatedly.

Battery life. Again, not discussed, so who knows. The number we're all probably interested in: you leave flash video on continuously. What happens?

Delivery date: Early 2011 promised. That could be anywhere from 3 months to close to 9 months from now, at least 1/2 the lifetime of the iPad away.

How useful of a device will this be without a BB phone or service? They clearly expect this to be paired with a BB phone/service. Now, will it just be no cell access if you don't have a BB phone/service, or will it be more seriously crippled minus a BB phone/service (see also the Palm Foleo)? No way to know that yet.

That's what I understood the name to mean, too —*a coach's playbook. Not some child's plaything.

Why do so many people not understand that there is a market for a 7"?

I know there is a silent majority of people out there who do not buy the iPad because it is too big to carry around conveniently.

I want a 6-7 incher because:

-I want to thumb type.
-I want it big enough to read articles (7" is about right for a paperback book)
-I want it to fit in a purse
-I want it inconspicuous in public
-I don't need to be surfing the net on the go, play games, write long passages: I want to listen to and change music on the go; read articles and pdfs; check contact information, have a to do list, make short voice memos or notes--all of these things do not need 11 inches plus.

More players producing 7", the faster apple might come out with one..

Why get this over say.. a laptop?

Don't get me wrong, I hate on the iPad just like any other tablet or netbook.

Were you looking at the same thing I was? I felt like the squarish shape and black plastic (assuming it's plastic) back makes the playbook look a little more toy-like than the iPad ...

I agree with you about the 7 inches being possibly more practical ... but it depends: if you're really using it for business and you're an architect or designer a bigger size might be nice for allowing your clients to see your projects in meetings. They should've upped the ante and made multiple sizes

Nice one, RIM!!!

7 inches is pretty good. I'd have to hold it to know if I prefer it to my 10" iPad, but I'm not opposed to the idea of a smaller screen, outright. I can't imagine using the back camera much, but the front facing camera sounds promising for video chat. Flash support is awesome. I've been pretty happy with my iPad, but it would be nice to be able to go on ANY website without worrying about it. Even if performance sucks... how well does my local restaurant's site have to perform if I just want to check the hours? Flash is most definitely a bonus, however you feel about it... Choice is nice. The speed sounds good. The device looks nice. Looks like an iPad, but it's a touch screen so they didn't have a lot of choice, unless they were going to do something outlandish.

I was actually hoping that it wouldn't be that great. I'm an Apple fan, I have to admit. I always want Apple to come out tops, but if anyone was gonna make this, I'm glad it was RIM (I have to say that, as a Canadian).

This raises the bar. I'd have to actually use the device to comment on the OS, but it looks like a real contender. Can't wait to see iPad 2 and the other tablets, now... I hope RIM prices this close to the iPad. It's definitely reads as the same level of device (if not a little higher end).

Props to everyone I know who worked on this. You did an awesome job.
