I don't know why we get so many of these threads (or why I keep responding!)....

Apple Stores have reservations so they can gauge demand for each store. So if a store has X reservations, then Apple will send them say, 1.5 times X.

There is no reason for them to give away your reservation. If they don't sell it to you on the 24th, then they will sell it the minute they open on the 25th. Guaranteed.

A mod really needs to add a sticky to all this hub-bub!

Agreed about the sticky. There needs to be a FAQ regarding reservations. I keep answering the same questions again and again in different threads. It is making me tired. ;)

Like the photo says, the iPhone is held until the store closes. You do realize those Apple reps are just minimum wage paid workers who can equally make up their own speculation as to what they think is right just like us?
Actually, they're fairly well-paid workers with a decent benefits package. And the ones in the stores? One of them is going to be opening and touching your iPhone 4 before you, to activate it in the store. :D

The only thing I think is a worry is that a lot of people's reservations didn't go through and register with Apple, but they received a confirmation e-mail. These people will then go to the store with their printout and get a phone while someone whose reservation went through will not because the sent too few phones to the store.

The confirmation email that you get when reserving specifically states that this DOES NOT guarantee that you will get a phone and that it's first come first serve. Thus the hub-bub.

If i were you i would double check. I went to the store, brought the printout of my email, and watched the employee look to see if i was on the reservation list. although they insisted that if you received an email that you should be safe, i still went down to the store so i didn't have to worry for a whole week.

Ahhhh The Small Print

Even tought the reservation email makes you think they have one waiting on you- this is what it says in the tiny faint print on the bottom of the email...

Having spoken to the apple store directly today it was confirmed that they are separating stock so that people with reservations have a phone with the name on it for the day of release so they will not sell it to anyone else.

This. :apple:

No, that's not the issue, I confirmed my reservation. What I'm saying is if they get 2,000 reserve iPhones at the store and there were really 2,500 people who reserved one but 500 of them didn't go through, Apple will still honor those 500 people's reservations based on their print out and 500 people who actually have REAL reservations will not get phones. That's what I'm saying. Not that it would be the end of the world!

do we really have to rehash this every day until the 24th?

seriously i'm not taking the word of the low level grunt sitting in a call center. the confirmation e-mails and screens all say that you have till end of business the 24th to get your phone before it is returned to general stock. and for some reason i tend to to think that an e-mail confirmation screen that would have been vetted by people who actual know what they are talking about is going to be more realiable than the word of a low level grunt who may not even have all the info

this is what everyone who is concerned about their reservation should do. they should go to the store they will be picking up from and ask that they look up the reservation. it is pretty simple.

Yeah, this might become real issue this time. There are quite many people with confirmation email but not on store's system. And there will be desperate forks with copied/duplicated printouts too. Typically that won't be a problem because the store staff checks their names before let people in (they did this for iPad Wifi launch) but this time they know there are forks caught in the reservation system glitch so I'm not sure how they'll confirm your reservation legitimacy.

Yes, they are holding the phone for you, but there is another thing to consider when you see the language that says that just because you have a reservation doesn't guarantee you will have a phone and that it is first come first served EVEN FOR those with reserved phones at the Apple Store.
For example, if the particular store you have your reserved phone sent to doesn't get its full allocation of phones (for whatever reason), or if there are any that aren't functioning, broken etc, the people with reservations in line first will get first dibs on the phone stock in hand. If you don't get there till the end, there is no guarantee you will have a phone waiting.

And again more misinformation. I have already posted this in multiple threads as well. The line about first come first serve is in regards to pre-authorization. This does not equal reservation.

There is or was a separate process that Apple started up after release of the first iPhone. This was to allow people to go online and pre-authorize their account for the iphone. You would then print up a form and bring it into the store. IF THERE WAS STOCK AVAILABLE, you would get a phone and the process would go much quicker. Hence the line about the first come first serve thing. Again, this is totally different than the reservation process.

at the end of the day it is going to be what is in the system, if you are in the system you're getting one, if you aren't then you won't be, their database is going to be the official word. i really don't see the confusion here. they will mark people off the list as they come in

Everyone needs to chill the F out. If you show up on the 24th you will get an iPhone. When I got my 3G there was no pre-order, you just had to wait in line at the store. Yes I waited for like 6 hours, but I got one. They will have thousands of them in stock. Chill---------------------------

"Don't Sweat the small stuff, its all small"

Here is Pre-Authorization

Ok attached is what pre-authorization showed just so you all can see. Again, looks similar to what our reservation emails show, but it is a DIFFERENT. This was a process whereby people could go online to Apple.com and get pre-authorized to upgrade their phone in the Apple store. You would do this process, print up the page and take it in with you to the store. They did not reserve a unit for you. If stock was there, you could get a phone. That is it. Hence the line about pre-authorization = first come first served.

Ok, done. :)

Hey everyone,

I just got off the phone with iPhone sales at Apple. I was told in no uncertain terms that a reservation just means that they have all your information and know what you want to buy when you show up at the store on launch day. It does NOT mean you're guaranteed a phone or that they're holding one for you. He recommended I get there super early and wait in line like everyone else.

Apparently, the only people that are guaranteed a phone are those that managed to get a full paid pre-order through on the 15th.

Just FYI.

Hope it's not true, or else there's going to be a riot.

Create it and we can get it added as a guide like we did the Upgrade Guide

I swear I'm not lying. I spoke to a dude at Apple sales. Call them yourself if you want to clarify - 1-800-MY-APPLE.

I was calling for an unrelated reason, to see if I could pick up my reserved phone but activate it to another person's account. He guy literally said, "well let me stop you right there, it seems you may have a bit of a misunderstanding about what a reservation actually is." He then went into explaining how it just lets the store know who I am and what I want without me having to say things like my social security number out loud in the store, and it in no way means there's a phone with my name on it waiting for me there.

Seriously guys, no BS. Someone else call and confirm if you want.

I'm really not trolling. I was actually upset when I was told this. The only other possibility is that the guy I was talking to had no idea what I was talking about...

I also called my apple store that is reserving my phone for me. He said that I was on the list, and that they will hold it. I plan on getting there early though just in case. I'm tired of coming on here every time and seeing a new post about how they are not going to hold reserved phones for you. Why would they even bother with reserving if they had no intentions of honoring it? I would be one pissed off person if I got there and they didn't have any. I don't think I would count of going there after 3pm though to try and pick up your reserve phone. You never know what could happen.

You still have to bring in your SS number. That's what they Apple guy told me. Also I DID NOT give them my SS number on phone or computer, so how would they know it to where I wouldn't have to say it out loud? You just show it to them or write it down.

For the SS that we provide, are we providing our own or the account holders SS?

If you're upgrading an existing account, it would probably be the account holder.

They asked for the phone #, social last 4 digits, and billing zip to confirm the account information for verification of upgrade eligibility.
